A handgun in shtf is going to be more useful than a rifle, id rather be armed at all times with a small, concealable gun than lug around a rifle that makes you a target. A rifle is definitely a good gun to have if you already have a handgun but wouldn't be my choice if I could only have one gun.

But in a lot of pistols you don't get the stopping power that comes with a rifle, also if you need to shoot at long range a pistol is pretty shit. I understand where you come from, pistols would definitely seem like the go to but I think a good rifle is a lot more versatile.

Won't argue about power, rifles are definitely superior. As for long range, not a primary concern for me, in shtf my primary concern would be to avoid gunfights. For that reason, a concealable close range defensive tool is more useful than a non concealable long range offensive tool.

I would take the ptr because it's the only semi-auto rifle I own other than a .22. Honestly, I would probably ditch it for an AR if I could, considering .308 is less common than 5.56 and the PTR weighs a ton.

ARs are the single most popular SHTF rifle in the United States. If you're serious about being a patriot you should own the weapon that maximizes parts and ammunition compatibility with the Federal and State armed forces, as well as with other patriots. This means grabbing an AR.

But you can hunt with rifles as well, and use it as a long range melee tool as well, if you stick a knife on the end. But you could shoot deer from long range. Also, I would try to avoid gunfights as well but if there's a situation where you can't avoid one, I'd much rather have my rifle. Better for killing and taking out multiple targets. Personally I'd rather have a rifle to fight other rifles than a pistol to fight rifles.

Remember post Sandy Hook, how there was absolutely zero .223/5.56x45 to be had anywhere. unless, of course, you wanted to spend a dollar or more a round. Reloading wasn't much of an option unless you already had a stockpile because bullets, primers, powder, and cases were gone too. In a SHTF scenario it will be vastly worse as people will kill for the bare necessities.

- SLR-107FR with US Palm grip and ALG AK trigger
-AR homebuild with BCM BFH upper/bcg (chromed), Aero lower, Magpul furniture, Stag LPK and buffer tube assembly, and Geissele SSA-E trigger
I still need optics for these things, but they both have plenty of mags and ammo. Both would make excellent all purpose ward-off-the-bullshit rifles.
