Would /k/ get one of their weapons engraved? If you would, why? If not, why?
Basically, give me your opinion on the matter in general.
I wouldn't.
They are neat to look at, but that is not something I want to own personally
My guns are for shooting, not art.
>>30580726
Would you say there is a better way to personalize a gun?
inb4 metal gear reference
>>30580832
Of course. I'm mainly seeing if /k/ has anything interesting to say about it.
I dunno. Maybe custom grips, but I don't think I'd get the metal portions engraved. Engravings don't feel very "cool" to me, partially because somebody else did most of the work
>>30580753
I would customized the hell of it. Like getting the exact pistol and pieces I want, grips sized for me, filing down pieces to my preference, cerakote some parts (I like the look of two-tone), tune the trigger. Doesn't even have to look great to other people, if I like it then I like it.
Reminds me of this knife. The style doesn't really match but it does look personal, like it's his knife and he enjoys it
>>30581079
OP here
I personally would only have a gun engraved if I knew how to engrave it myself. And I'm pretty sure that's not gonna be easy.
I also have to heavily agree with you on the second part. Although I probably would take caution in making modifications myself. Contact a gunsmith for advice maybe.
>>30580686
its a great way to ensure i'm never able to sell the fuckin thing
>>30580686
i'm partial to engraved SAAs, but i would never buy a laser engraved one and i could never justify the cost to have it done by hand. and as the other anon said, it would be best if i could do it myself so that it would actually feel like my gun; and so many are engraved in ways i don't care for or they have too much or too little.
Engravings offer no tactical advantage.
>>30580686
I've always thought they looked gaudy unless it's on a side by side shotgun
>>30580686
Depends, do you want to pay for a wallhanger?
Because a firearm isn't much fun if it isn't cheap, modular, with plentiful spare parts, a vibrant aftermarket, and so mass produced it is practically disposable.
That's why we love AR-15s and Glocks.
>>30582042
>>30582050
Faggy
>>30580868
Technically it would make it lighter. Tactically you could potentially move a lighter object with less effort.
I never knew this was a meme I quit after MGS2
>>30581917
>its a great way to ensure i'm never able to sell the fuckin thing
That's part of the reason why if I had a weapon I knew I would never want to get rid of I would consider having stuff like engraving done.
>>30582050
...that is hideous
>>30582084
This. It's like a Monet or something hanging askew in an outhouse.
>>30582055
you not man enough to handle a little fine, hand engraving on your favorite gun? or, are you say that he is a Glock that likes to put himself into other Glock's ejection ports?
I have a Norinco sks that I want personalized, as it was my second gun. The damn thing is great personally, but as most Norincos in my area are all beat up anyways. All this leaves is for me to just personalize the stock but not really butcher it. What would /k/ do with it?
>>30582084
>>30582092
>>30582055
still better than this..
>>30580868
>Quote came from someone who used twin SAA Revolvers.
What did he mean by this?
If I had the money for a hand engraved one as a wall hanger, sure.
Or if I managed to be fabulously wealthy and wanted a laughably gaudy carry pistol.
>>30582131
*smacks lips*
>>30582028
At least one person posted it.
I've never even played MGS
>>30582114
Clear you need the stock carved with a reproduction of one of those lush PLA girl paintings like pic related.
Yes. I would engrave some legal sounding disclaimer stating that the weapon will be used in self defense only etc.
doesn't necessarily have to be an engraved gun.
i'd love to get a custom one of these for my favorite rifle.
>>30582214
Probably because it is forced. It's not funny.
Op here.
I'm starting to see that, pistols are mostly no goes but decorative rifles are a bit more acceptable.
Also more metal gear solid, yadadada.
>>30582310
To be fair, an engraved weapon is a status symbol for the most part. Unless you play to have your pistol in a glass office case like some sort of drug lord, you're better off with a rifle.
If you're rich enough to afford a masterwork, I'd recommend you use them anyway simply because you're rich enough, they're extremely well made, the gunsmith will probably offer repairs for life, and well, why the fuck not?
>>30580686
If I didn't carry it in woods, I'd more than likely have my BFR (45-70) inlaid in gold accents, then probably change the rubber grips out to black wood. Sadly, it's just a big target pistol due to several years of carrying and heavy usage. But hey, that's what I got it for!
Another gun I'd like to engrave is my 458 Lott. To me, the bolt (it's a CZ 550, btw) is begging for inlay work, and the receiver is needing some floral engraving.
Some of my other guns, I cannot see a purpose or reason to engrave other than being "what the owner wants/likes" just like my two choices. You can engrave anything, but it's so hard to get it "right" for everyone to enjoy and accept. There's definitive class involved in an engraved gun, I'll give you that. But an extensive cape buffalo hunt surrounded in fleur-de-lis might look odd on a hi-point pistol. Things just have to "fit", which is often done by the artist. If you want to sacrifice a finish, sometimes a new artist will engrave/inlay for free, but just remember, not all tattoo artists are gifted.
>>30582179
wasted opportunity.
should have been 1$ bills.
>>30582341
You have to be able to pull off such a look without seeming pretentious or overly ostentatious. Makes a pretty good amount of sense.
I personally looked into engravings mainly to think of ways to personalize a gun. Make it truely mine. Other way I've seen is to mod it practically to better suit your body and needs. I'd do either one if I could.
>>30582326
well used and well loved engraved cowboy guns get me going.
>>30582365
+1 for personalization, I currently have an adapted leather cuff on my 458 to hold 6 extras on the stock. It probably looks disgusting to purists, but it looks 'neat' to me lol. You gotta make stuff that you own yours in some way.
>>30582398
Whatever works.
I will warn you of using lol in these parts. Not taken well usually. Just a warning
You got any pictures?
Not exactly engraving, but it's close and I did it myself on my first gun. Fuck resale value on nuggets anyways.
>>30582389
That's quite nice, but I can't imagine what I would do with it.

As I said, more metal gear solid, yadadada. Was more hoping there'd be more a discussion. At least to the extent /k/ can provide.
>>30582103
I like it!!
Also, for all you insecure, small-dick, 'macho' men on this thread, take a look at this >>30582155
This is how all guns used to be made. It was a sign of class and significance if you had the resource to get a gun so ornamentally made.
>>30582412
good, i love pissing people off. But I got some pictures on my old phone but it will take a year for it to charge enough to turn on. to give you a visual on the 458, it's a hooded front sight wood stocked bolt-action with a cowboy-styled flair to it. I even added some fringe to the front and back of the safari sling I have on. There's no mods to the actual rifle, other than powder-coated reloads, but it has it's own personality. As for the BFR, it's stock except for the bandolier holster, also accented with powder-coated bullets. I pretty much wanted to shoot an elephant gun for cast bullet prices, and both guns share the same diameter, so no more 120-dollar boxes of shells
>>30582131

Definitely.

>>30583159
Any idea how much it would cost? Also, what would be the best pose for the engraving and size/place of it on the stock.
I'm planning out my "legacy" gun pretty soon actually. My grandfather was a gun engraver, restorer, blacksmith etc after he retired and would engrave old colts, make custom boxes for them etc. In essence he could make a 200 dollar gun a 2000 dollar gun. There was a piece had that I always kinda eyed, it had real simple engraving on it and it was talked that when I got old enough it may be passed on to me. Well he died a number of years back and one of my siblings went in and took everything. I'm wanting to have a piece not too dissimilar from what I remember as a kid, something I could pass down from my self to my own kid/grandkid to somewhat remember that heritage.
So yeah, will it be shot? Maybe a couple of times, but not really. I have others for that purpose, this is just something I WANT. I think understanding that difference is really the big key to getting a really customized piece like that.
>>30583209
The only custom engraving place I found in a 5 min search that actually listed prices had them ranging from $100 to $250. Rifle checkering and packages went $300 to $500.

The game MGS 3 takes place in the past. In that game Big Boss the leader of Outer Haven in metal gear 1 and MGSV meets Revolver Ocelot for the first time. Initially Ocelot doesn't use revolvers and in his showing off with his semi automatic pistol jams his gun and is disarmed by Snake (Big Boss). Big Boss looks at his gun and tells him that it's nice but offers no tactical advantage (a meme is born)
After that fight Ocelot adopts revolvers as a more reliable firearm, and finds that the difficulty in reloading them makes combat exciting.

I lay out the design on Corel Draw (similar to illustrator), print it in reverse on transparencies, then transfer the images.
I've been engraving seriously since 2008.
Mistakes happen, it's how you cover them up that's important.
If I ended up killing someone in a legally dubious way I wouldn't want to have used a one of a kind weapon that could be identified as mine.

Because good engraving is truly art.
I currently have a Ruger Blackhawk Bisley out to get the frame color case hardened through Wyoming Armory, and when I get it back I'll have the cylinder engraved. I intend to do a fair amount of gold inlay work as well, which I can do myself (I can engrave too but I'm nowhere good enough for presentation pieces and have no ability to conceptualize art and just follow patterns).
>but thats expensive!
Gonna be a little over $800 for the engraving and $125 plus shipping for the case hardening. I already have the tools and gold wire. Soo...yeah, I guess.
>but why?
Because I like how it looks and it's something I can take pride in since I did some of it myself.
>>30583697
Glad you enjoy it, and yeah I'm looking for an original Colt SAA to engrave and have him blue it really nicely.
