which are better?
why?

Pretty much any polearm beats pretty much any sword pretty much every time. It's not like people carried only one or the other into battle anyways.

According to that trailer, the Katana is superior.

Fucking weeb. But naginata, in open battle. Superior reach, greater power, and still kinda usable even with a broken blade.

The naginata is superior simply put because it has a wider number of moves.
Watch the first third of this video to understand what I mean.

As you can see the katana wielder can do not much except for one edged slashes whilst the naginata user can perform a more diverse variety of strikes.

why not both

there are several styles that train to use a staff as a spear or naginata with a broken blade. In a fight like that the polearm has the advantage
>>
Naginita please!

Naganita and yari are the great equalizers. It allowed the common ashigaru, unable to train quite as much as the warrior bushi class because farm and normal life, to cut down those arrogant nobles with its better reach and defensive capability.

samurai, when they fought as melee troops, used spears and naginata as well. The thing that let peasants match samurai was massed formations of spearmen.

Most wounds were of course from arrows, and later guns

never said samurai didn't use them, but that's what naganita and yari are most famous for. Not as much skill required to use effectively... Learning curve is smaller... etc etc. All I said is that they are equalizers. Also there are different types of ashigaru, retainers, common soldiers, sohei, etc. Each with their own levels of fighting experience, style, and place in the rigid class system of feudal japan. One must realize that much of the fighting in japan, especially before the introduction of the matchlock, was done in small groups and skirmishes, mostly due to the clan oriented nature and geography. From what I have read and gathered the naganita originated from the tendai sect of warrior monk or at the very least was made famous by them. Above every bushi threshold a naganita is found as it is a great weapon for any member of the household to use in defense. Katana was used widely in battle despite the disadvantage because of the prestige that came with being one to own a katana. The bushi class were an arrogant bunch of assholes who would literally find any excuse to test out their swords by cutting down a peasant who "looked at him the wrong way".

>naginata win everytime

swords in the west like zweihanders were known be be effective against pike formations.

also most men at arms usually only had pole arms because they were so much cheaper and then knights and other heavy cavalry used lance and sword.

Well I am afraid many of the notions you suggest are not very popular with historians today.

for one thing sohei and proper retainers are not really ashigaru. sohei were pretty much the same as samurai, except they served a temple rather than a feudal lord.

ashigaru, refers to a specific type of lightly armored foot soldier that did not become popular until the 15th century, most warriors before that period, even lowly foot solders, came from the ranks of samurai or at least low level land owners like hyakusho(old mean of the term not edo period meaning)

If a samurai was going to fight the sword would usually be his side arm and he would arm himself with any number of weapons as his primary, the bow, spear and naginata being among the most popular

Katana were not widely used in battle compared to naginata and spears, long swords, nodachi were popular for a period for those who could afford them, but they are a very different weapon.
