Hey /k/, I'm looking to get my first 12 gauge, what is the consensus recommendation for a reliable home defense one that doesn't break the bank?
Mossberg 500
Don't get a pistol grip only shotgun, you want a stock.

whats your budget?
>>30576431
No worries, that was just the first pic I saw, I won't do that
>>30576437
Preferably less than $500

Excellent, thank you

That except with a stock is great. Birdsheads grips and stockless shotgun are inferior in every way when compared to a shotgun with a stock.

Mossberg 500 is overall alright, if you want a fancier one, the 590 has some nifty bells and whistles but is overall the same, it'll cost more of course.
The Maverick 88 is a budget model of the Mossberg 500, overall it's considered to be pretty alright for it's price.
For the same price, you can also get a Stevens 320 (Winchester 1300 clone), by Savage, which is about as good.
If you're really hurting for money, a single barrel shotgun can be ludicrously cheap (sub $100 for a passable one), but it won't be as handy or practical. They can be even cheaper if used.

jesus christ that is a beautiful shotgun...
>>30576725
If you put a stock on those 14" barrel shotguns they'll become Short Barrel Shotguns, I'd think twice about that.
They have the birdshead grip for a reason.

older used remington 870
I have honestly never seen a older Remington 870 break.
>>30576765
There's just something about putting together your own trenchgun, man.
>>30576776
Won't they fetch a higher price given that new Remingtons are shit?
Kind of like looking at an old Winchester 94 vs. a new one, the older ones command a higher value for being higher quality.
>>30576843
no, they are any where from 250-350, with some special models around 500.
>>30576431
Good option. You can pick one up around 300 bucks OP.
>>30576731
Good info. If you are going to prop it up in the corner you don't need the 590 upgrades really... hell the Mav 88 will probably do you just fine. I have the 500 and I have no complaints.
Don't listen to >>30576431 , the best gun for you is the gun you want. That said, pistol grip shotties are far easier to handle (and far easier on the wrist) if you make the fore end a pistol grip too.

For the record, a 20" Mossberg 500 Persuader with tacstar grips comes out to about 400 bucks, and that's for a Californian, so expect at least a 100 bucks less in a less communist state
>>30576419
For under 200, you can get a Pardner Pump or Hawk 982, which are both clones of the 870 and built like tanks.
For under 350 you can probably find a Benelli Nova Tactical on top of that gets you a mag tube extension that gives you 7 plus 1

Maybe OP isn't Duke Nukem?
>>30581883
>not wanting to be Duke Nukem
impossible
>>30578195
My shotgun looked like that when I was 18.
You should get at least a folding stock.

what a symbolic .gif
>>30576419
Mossberg 500, as everyone else says. Fantastic weapon, got mine for 250 lightly used
>>30576419
Picked up a Mossberg 500 tactical for $418 after tax.
>>30582061
This, you really want a stock on your shotgun.
>>30581896
If it isn't a Winchester 1300 Defender with a TacStar foregrip and heatshield, it's not Duke Nukem, so why pretend with other shotguns? Ideally you'd want the engraving too.
>>30582299
You did pretty good.
>>30582416
While that stock is ugly that's not a bad idea, but I need pistol grips to pump properly, I'm always slipping on pumps and wind up shortshucking.
>>30583786
I like VFGs, but have you considered a strap? Mossbergs have those available.
