so /k/... was downtown in knoxville this weekend and realized i may be internally over-reacting with my situational awareness while in urban areas. Am i being paranoid or is waiting to be in a confrontation while innacity a normal reaction?
>>
>>30576413

I mean, are you freaking out? Are you breaking a sweat? Is your heartrate going up over nothing?

Then maybe.

Still, it's better to be paranoid than dead or injured.
>>
>>30576413
doesnt hurt to scan your surroundings and give people and objects ocular patdowns, youre doing one better then all the drones drfting around with their face glued to their phones or just being plain oblivious
>>
>>30576429
nah just constantly administering everyone the ocular pat-down, and assesing ambush points, keeping my wife on my protected side, being aware of anyone behind me ( i carry a @ 4oclock). i feel like im overdoing it, but am i?
>>
Don't get too worked up and nervous over it, that'll probably do more harm than good.

That said, yes, you should always be aware. I have and it has possible saved my life before

>visiting Chicago for the weekend with my girlfriend
>CC'ing my handgun
>rather judged by 12 than carried by 6 etc etc
>getting late
>we take a shortcut that unexpectedly led through sort of a rough area (we don't visit Chicago that often and we were walking)
>walking past a group of urban youth
>my girlfriend has her nose in her phone like always
>I spot the guys about 30 yards out, they start eyeballing us and laughing
>two of them start grabbing knives and whatnot and getting ready to try something
>I lift my shirt up slightly, exposing my gun, and shake my head
>they continue glaring at us, but otherwise give me a wide birth and part ways

I know I'll get a lot of shit for letting them know I had a weapon, but I really didn't feel like risking it. If I hadn't noticed they were gearing up for a confrontation and taken steps to avoid it, I'd probably either be without my wallet or without my life right now.
>>
>>30576482
not that crazy, just try not to make your action so obvious. moving your wife to your other side because you feel threatened makes you look like a target.
>>
my situational awareness is pretty great, i feel like it saved me a few times.
Alot them happened either before or after work, it was a pet store right next to a bad neighborhood.

>I was going into work one morning and i felt like someone was following me.
>It was an empty parking lot and the store had yet to have its grand opening.
>After about 20 feet i noticed the sound of footsteps inline with my own.
>I turned around and about 15 feet behind was a random asian guy covered in tattoos with a gold grill, long hair, and a fu manchu(i kinda giggle after, he was like a rare pokemon in south carolina)
>I said "hey man, whats up" casually while putting my hand into my pocket.
>He immediately turned and walked off in a different direction and down a dead end street.

>A few days later at night i was changing a tire after work(we had still yet to open) and we were in the middle of finishing the store.
>A black trucked pulled in, stopped in the parking lot, started back up again, left, came back, left again, came back again, circle a few times, then parked in the corner of the parking lot for about 30 minutes with the lights off but the engine on.
>I went back inside and let my bosses know so they left together.

>On a separate occasion i had to work on my car after hours again(i know right).
>Then a car turned up blocking me in.
>I grabbed my tire iron out of the passenger and set it beside me with the hood open.
>The car sat there blocking me in for about 5 more minutes.
>>
yeah, ive never had anything crazy happen, but cc and self defense stories are always bubbling u der the surface when out and about. im 6' and fit and carry myself with confidence, but sometimes feel im being overly aggressive with looking around, etc.. guess it gets easier over time ( been carrying 1.5 years). ive read alot of mayoob and try to apply it. its probably all in my head. like when your high and you think people notice but in reality no one probably does.
>>
Every time I go out to the city on the weekend there's cops on foot patrol fucking everywhere. And they take note of anyone with their head up. They stare at me until I'm past.
>>
>>30576520
You really should just stick to the north side.
>>
>>30576413
>Am i being paranoid or is waiting to be in a confrontation while innacity a normal reaction?
Depends where you are, why, when, and in what part of the country/state.

I live in Montreal, so plenty of people wanna fight. They're not gonna do it in the street, though. And such fighty people are gonna be on the stoops of bars looking at people from those bars, not wandering the sidewalks picking actually random fights.

Alleys here are fairly well lit and high traffic, so they're very safe. But that's part of our urban design; in the US, they're not meant to be throughfares, so they're much more dangerous, owing to being poorly lit and lower-traffic (fewer witnesses and helpers)

I find a good rule of thumb is that if you cast a shadow, you're safe. If you can be seen, you're safe. There's cops and bystanders to help/call 911 everywhere that's well lit, because they're well lit for reasons.

If you need to have ~Situational Awareness~ beyond just not bumping into things, you're in the wrong fucking hood and have already fucked up and have it coming because you are probably LITERALLY a yankee tourist chanting "I wish a nigga would. I WISH A NIGGA WOULD"
>>
>>30577253
good perspective. thanks
>>
when there's nothing to fear and everything's fine, you fill it up with your bullshit.

>never been mugged
>never known anybody who's been
>still repeat "you never know what's out there"
>CCW, go get CCW certified, have to walk around awkwardly
>defend having round in the chamber because this person that's going to rob you that doesn't exist "could grab your arm"
And ironically now you are more of a threat to everyone for it going off than this invisible fake wave of crime that you think is out to get you.

use the gun on yourself already
>>
>>30577321
>now you are more of a threat to everyone for it going off

Sounds like someone's pissy because they can't carry a gun without shooting themselves in the leg.
>>
>>30577321
but thats what everyone who gets mugged, etc probably thinks right before shit goes south.
>>
>>30577354
If you actually get mugged In The Current Year, you either live in a shithole you should have moved out of years ago, or are a complete moron who goes through alleys hoping to finally use their concealed pistol on somebody

>j-just wold fallacy ;_;
Why don't you take major throughfares to get home and travel in groups and/or through well-lit high-visibility/traffic areas?
>>
>>30577345
i think he meant "making shit pop off" because your on edge and more likely to exaserbate the situation.

Unless you like easy hipster chicks or UrbEx there is absolutely no reason to go to Knoxville.

The night scene is absolute shit for a city its size. Especially one with a major university.

I thought this too except more like you'd shoot a guy unlawfully because you're too on-edge to judge situations properly

CCW licenses should come with ROE cards

>>30577321
I got the cop that beats in my area to start e-mailing me a copy of his weekly beat report.

In the past two weeks there have been two shootings and four robberies in my neighborhood, two of them aggravated (involved a weapon).

I thought this was a good neighborhood. Never been mugged or anything here, but I also don't walk around so I literally *did not know*.
I can't help but think that you are in the same situation prior to weekly PDFs.
>>
>>30577442
ya. agreed. but its the closest metro area.
>>
>>30577425
you're a pussy, the city is far more safe than the woods

you can protect yourself from mugging by being near street lamps; you can't protect yourself from mama bears and moose bucks by just being well lit

also cities have police. meme out all you want about MUH SIX HUNDRED MINNIT RESPONSE TIME; police patrol. if you are genuinely scared for your life for whatever reason at any time, you can flag down a cruiser and tell them. they'll probably at least give you a soothing chat, if not a ridealong/escort to the nearest distinctly safe area (unless they're busy)
>>
>>30577464
I guarantee those shootings and robberies are perpetrated by people the victims knew personally

ESPECIALLY assaults

beating someone up is a risky chore; people don't do it for no reason.

>>
>>30577253
Don't rely too much on people to help you tho. There is this scary thing called the bystander effect. People have been raped in the fucking metro without anyone lifting a finger.
>>
>>30576520
They're just standing around a pile of knives?
>>
>>30577514
well you can guarantee that all you want, but you're completely wrong. I just read through the past two weeks and only about 20% of the overall crimes were done by someone known to the victim. The other 80% were done by strangers. I miscalculated the number of robberies, it's actually more like 24 robberies in the past two weeks and four aggravated assaults. Only one of the aggravated assaults was performed by someone known personally by the victim, unfortunately.
>>
>>30577514
To be fair, I thought you would be right because of obvious street smarts (I used to be a criminal, thus the crime report hunting), and was surprised when I looked back through the two beat reports.
>>
>>30577321
please explain how you are 'more of a threat to everyone for it going off'

I don't understand, how could a well-maintained gun possibly go off without the trigger being depressed (which a good holster will 100% prevent)? please enlighten me

I must be one of the improbable survivors, I've CC'd my makarov around the farm and never blown my cock off

Hey anon HMU on kik yippiekiyay, need a new shooting buddy in Knoxville
>>
definitely keep aware, but don't look like you're worried or nervous.

whenever I'm in a city, I walk with my head high and back straight. I'm constantly looking around, anyone who can see me also knows that I see them. I'm not staring at the floor like a dumbass or trying to catch a pokemon

Body language is one of the main criteria by which muggers determine whether or not to rob you

keeping my eyes open and my brain thinking has probably saved me more than a couple times.

>be a little anon, like 2-3 years old
>be in my fenced in front yard in the suburbs, playing in the grass
>older, strange, neighborhood boy walking by on the sidewalk(think Adam Lanza or James Holmes)
>he has one of those great big, old lady purses in is hands
>he stops halfway past our house and addresses me
>he tells me that he has something special in the bag for me
>i just have to go over to him and look inside/stick my head inside the bag
>i tell him no and go back inside the house to my parents

>be older anon, mid 20s
>walking home from work at night, 1-2am
>going to a storage unit i have rented along the way. need something out of it
>inside the unit for a second to find what i was looking for, door 3/4ths closed
>hear footsteps in the gravel outside
>footsteps get closer, but the person is trying to step lightly
>footsteps sound like they stopped near my unit
>call out in a loud voice if i can help them
>i just hear feet slightly shuffling in the gravel, a foot to the right of my door
>i slam the door all the way down, step on it to keep it from being lifted, hammer in my hand
>somehow get a cell signal and call the police (even if i had a gun at the time i couldn't safely get out)
>cop shows up after what seemed like 20 mins
>creep must have skedaddled, cop dinseenuffin

>leaving work another night
>notice strange car parked in the parking lot, it JUST parked there before i was about to leave
>it looks somehow familiar
>make my walk home, to my apartment, keep a close eye on that car
>as i get to my building that very same car speeds into my apartment's parking lot
>it stops at the front door of the building as i'm getting into it.
>nobody is supposed to park there

>make it to my apartment building
>that strange car is now fucking parked in the visitor area, at a strategically perfect spot to watch me enter the building
>i stare right at his fucking tinted out windshield as i'm going to the door
>take quick peeks to the sides where a person could be, to be safe
>hand still on my hand-cannon in my pocket
>keep looking right at the fucking car like i'm about to destroy it (hoping he gets the damned message)
>make it inside, door locked behind me, make it to my apartment
>i wait 10 mins or so and then go over to the window down the hall of my floor, peek out
>car is gone ofc
>i finally recall who's car it is
>it's the douche that has been living in the little; seasonal, rental cabins for tourists across the road from my work.
>dude's been renting it for at least a whole year. i always see that car parked there
>change my route home from now on, eyes always open, hand always near my .45
>i think he got the message
>haven't seen the car anywhere else but parked at his cabin after that

>Live inna suburbs
>Visit Chicago for overtaxed beer and women and beaches

Only been mugged once because I was wandering the alleys drunk trying to make it back to a friend's place.

Generally speaking, a slight amount of basic situational awareness goes a long way in Chicago. Personal responsibility goes a lot further. So long as you understand that yes bad things can happen and not have your face buried in your phone, nothing bad will really happen. If you ever want an idea on how bad people's situational awareness, just look around you whenever you're in public.

Also read Left of Bang for a good breakdown of what to look for sometimes. Saved my bacon a few times.

>>30576413
I'm more scared of fucking ghosts and shit like someone saying your name in your ear but there is nobody else walking in the entire block. Being attacked for no reason is not a reason to by afraid, it is thinking who is going to attack you that generates the fear.
>>
>>30577399
If I had the right to carry a pistol with me to make sure I stay safe, I would. Sadly I'm living in a cuck european country where doing so is a crime in the first place.

I also live in a "nice neighborhood" with good ol' people and little flowers, yet I've seen some shit around involving illegal firearms, drug dealing, armed robberies, assaults, kidnapping attempts, family brawls with shots fired, and so on.

All this in a nice close-to-the-city village which used to be a good place but turned out to be shit because people come and go, and because society, and because violent hood culture, yadda yadda, you name it.

Should I go away ? Sell the house my great great great great father built and where I still live ? Should I flee a place that could be fixed with some ass-beatings and cheek-bloodying ?

NO. This is MY territory. I'm not a threat to anybody except shitheads. Thankfully I've not been targeted specifically YET. But this day will come. If I'm outside when it occurs, I'll have nothing to defend myself against multiple attackers. And I wish I would.

Stop trying to blame peaceful american people genuinely affraid for their own safety. Yes there is evil out there. And yes it's out to get them.

Now get out of /k/ you fucking maggot.

Go be a gun grabber libtard anti CCW somewhere esle.

it might be becoming the same all over.
i'm so tired of drugs, and the eroding intelligence of my fellow man. politicians serving only their own interests, mind melting media, religions of hatred, mentally lazy zombies and their knee-jerk reactions to everything. our species is capable of so much more.

even near me in my mostly peaceful state some druggie, brainless POS hacked up his girlfriend and left her rotting in his apartment while he just played video games.

but besides that, the idea of freedom and liberty and a government that respects them is still a good one.
