Why is the SKS so popular among gun enthusiasts?
>>
Because in the hands of a good operator, they can kill 30-50 babies/second.
>>
Same reason as the Mosin Nagant, I'd guess; it was a cheap, entry-level gun at one point, so lots of people bought them.
>Fucking storefront Captcha
>>
Cheap, semi-auto, Slavshit, and they look cool.
>>
>>30574833
It use to be a cheap, decent quality rifle that is chambered for a decent intermediate round
>>
>>30574833

Developed in 1488 by the absolute madman Mikial "Maneater" Kalishnakov the Silent Killer Seventy was the first Assault Weapon that has enough thrust per squeeze to kill over seventy Jewish fetuses per second.

It's integral high capacity assault clip allowed the high caliber rounds to be fired in a sealed environment rendering the shots completely silent.

It's popular in modern times by right wing death squads to silently kill minorities, evidenced by the aerodynamic wooden furniture.
>>
>>30574833
Cheap, reliable rifle firing an adequate intermediate cartridge that is pretty much the semi-auto .30-30 equivalent.

Add it's historical value (in many areas, firearms development in Russia and worldwide, the move to an intermediate cartridge, internal magazine despite other designers beginning to move to detachable box magazines, etc.) and it's aesthetics and its no wonder its popular.

They are GOOD rifles even if a lot of modern rifles will outperform it.
>>
>>30574833
its a cheap semi auto rifle that shots a cheap bullet that can kill a deer, hog, or person.
whats so hard to understand?
>>
>>30574833

Because it bridges the gap between early 20th century weaponry and the age of the AK. One of the earliest adopters of the intermediate cartridge.
Its stout as fuck, way overbuilt, designed to be simple and keep working for decades of abuse.
Anyone from a cub scout to a 75 year old war vet can shoot it and hit what they're aiming at.
They used to be cheap, and now are more expensive but still appropriate to what the gun is genuinely worth.
Until recently they were generally thought to be ban-proof considering they can qualify as C&R and the 10 round fixed mag, I believe they still aren't blacklisted in any states.

I've owned many rifles in my life and I still find this to be my favorite.

I have a friend who has one. we both grew up in california. just after highschool he got one. we were both poor and it was the cheapest gun with the cheapest ammo that would actually stop a man. I think he paid 250$ for it. this was in 2003ish? It was a fun rifle. He never cleaned it and it stop functioning about 5 years down the road, probably just needed to be cleaned. I think he sold it for like $700 so whatever.

It was cheap for a long time, it's still around $100 in Canada and legal there as well.

For the current US prices going at around 300-400 dollars it's shit but for $100 it's great gun especially as it fires with cheap-ass ammunition.

So think about it as about semi-auto mosin.

A little out of touch with reality, aren't we? You're an idiot if you really base all gun price points on the hay days of massive imports.
SKS and mosins etc were only so cheap because of the crazy over-supply. Expecting them to stay there forever is beyond naive. You probably think 545 surplus should still cost under 10cents per round too, and surplus 8mm and 303 brit should cost next to nothing too.

Beat up stocks shouldn't affect function, but will affect value depending on condition.

Chink and Slav made so many of them, that when they modernized, they have stockpiles of them. China in particular since it was the Service Rifle even up to the late 60s.

In fact China's defensive policy under the Mao years was basically this: Arm the Civilians. They set up caches filled with SKS and other surplus weapons all over the country where Peasants could be readily organized into militias at the moments notice when le ebil capitalist arrives.

Guarded by lock and key and by a policeman, many have been looted by arms smugglers or pretty much forgotten somewhere in rural china.

Pic unrelated: it's a Type 63. A local crossbreed of a Kalashnikov and an SKS. An attempt to make a cheapo automatic capable rifle for the Chinese Militia -then a sizable force of the Chink military- Chinese didn't want it so bad that the Militias demanded their SKS's back and fobbed the Type 63s into civilian armories.

$400 for a Yugo SKS. Comes with a case, lock, and the cleaning kit. Bore looks good, gun looks well lubed but I'll probably strip it down and clean and TLC it before I take it to shoot.

Serials on the receiver match the stock, stock itself is in alright condition. Is this a good buy for a califag?
>>
>>30589946
You sure that's a Yugo? If so, it must be an old one, as most Yugos have the little grenade launcher part. Check to see if it has chrome lining in the barrel. Otherwise, I was able to get a yugo for $330, after months of being on Gun Broker, but $400 is the max you really should spend on a SKS, unless it's an East Germany or a Russian variant.

>>
>>30590596
Make sure all of the serial numbers match, look for signs of neglect, ensure the bore isn't a mess on the inside. Check the gas valve to see if the little wash bit needs replacing.

If it's covered in cosmo, it just means you'll just need to wash the metal parts with mineral spirits (paint thinner), especially the firing pin.
>>
>>30590912
Gotcha. Thanks for the help.

Anyone familiar with California law know if affixing a 10 round duckbill magazine to it would be illegal? I know the sporter variant SKS is banned (by name) so I'm not sure what the legality of it is, provided the stock isn't the thumbhole or pistol grip stock.

I have owned every variant of commonly available sks-russian, m59, m59/66, type 56, and norinco. I now own 2 russian tulas and the m59. The chinese rifles had inferior fit and finish. The stocks especially felt soft and fragile. The m59/66 was very front heavy and leaked.

If you ever get a chance to hold an m59, the heft it incredible. They are extremely solid, even more heavily built than the russians. It feels indestructible. According to serial numbers and production figures, mine was the last rifle built in 1964 by the yugoslvians.

Babby's first attempt at bubba

Adding a rear sling mount next. Just need to figure out where. Would like to put on the side like the original stock had it - magazine doesn't dig into my back - but the cheek rest sorta gets in the way.

Any ideas?

Yes, return the gun to its original configuration because you have destroyed its historical value and no one will ever want to buy your "custom" gun

Original stock is shitty chink wood with a really long split on one side.

I could've put a railed receiver cover on it with an airsoft red dot, and swapped the stock and magazine for plastic tapco shit.

It's made from the same laminate blanks that every other stockmaker makes theirs from. All originates from the same factory.

I like it. It's laminate, so it adds like 1.3lb to the gun, but it looks good and didn't require much fitting.

They sell them in that particular color anymore though.

Any suggestions for alternative stocks? I was looking at the ATI stuff but they don't have stellar reviews. My stock is for a type 56 and it has two cracks, one that runs from the back of the receiver down through the grip, and I'd like to get something that doesn't promise a face full of metal some time in the future.

Be it just for shooting steel at the range or hunting the SKS is almost the perfect first time rifle, it's not the best rifle you could get but it's a rifle you cannot go wrong with.

They're reliable, and pretty ban-proof being 10 rounds and made of wood, not scary black plastic.

They've become a lot less popular recently now that a good one will run you almost 400 fucking dollars. I remember being able to pick one up in very good condition for like $120, can't really do that now.

I want to buy an sks but I have some questions.

How much would you pay for a pristine condition Russian? I'm talking unfired, preserved since it was made in the 50s. I'm looking at this one right now but I don't know how much is too much.

How do I tell the difference between the Chinese ones made for the military and the Chinese ones made for US civilian import?

Are the Yugo ones good? They're so much cheaper but the lack of a chrome lined barrel really makes it my last choice.
>>
>>30598633
Chinese imports (Norinco) will have stocks that have a very distinctive color.
Type 56's will have the jianshe armory cartouche on the side and will commonly have darker wood.

Yugos are fine, probably just as good quality-wise as Russians. The lack of chrome lining isn't an issue anymore since it's near impossible to find corrosive 7.62x39. The only real cons anymore are subjective, the main one being weight towards the front from the attachments. You can probably find M59s if you look a bit though, which are Yugos without the 'nade launcher.

$200 for a Remington 740 in 30-06
>>

>>
>>30598920
There's plenty of corrosive yugoslavian brass case ammo out there.
>>
>>30599521
Maybe it's just gone up in price then, but I was always under the impression that surplus 7.62x39 had pretty much dried up.
>>
>>30599556
They're pricier, but they come already loaded on stripper clips which is nice.
>>
SKS is a cheap, reliable, high quality semi-auto.

They are, of course, ancient slavshit with somewhat rudimentary sights and no way to properly affix optics without modifying the receiver, and they feed from stripper clips or really shitty aftermarket magazines, but they throw 7.62x39 around as well as anything else.
>>
>>30598734
Fuck you. That's awesome. How do you like it?

I myself have a non-refurb Russian with all matching parts. It's sights are perfectly on and it runs beautifully. It's early, so no chrome lined barrel and no spring on the safety, but it's a prized member of my collection. Paid $230 Canadabucks for it at my LGS right before the dollar kind of went to shit, which was only $30 more than refurbs at the time.
>>
>>30598633
>How much would you pay for a pristine condition Russian?

i'd pay $400, $500 wouldn't be out of line

yugos are pretty good, the chrome isn't that big of a deal, it lowers accuracy a bit as a matter of fact. just remember to clean your gun right after shooting.

that other SKS i posted was sold -- for $50 more I found one with a better bore and a polycarb stock, okay rifle scope, dust cover with rails that allow you to use the iron sights (what's the name for that again?)
It also comes with the stock furniture and etc, but they put this shit on it on the shelf.
Formerly belonged to some fudd who got arrested for domestic violence and sold his gun to the range or something.

$450 for an M59 with two sets of furniture and bag, scope, cleaning kit, and rail is not too shabby, especially for california

no, there is high variance in surplus gun prices, they have only spiked this hard recently online. if you know where to look you can spend much less for certain guns.

It's a nice complete package for cheap. It's semi auto, fires a common decent power round, easy to maintain has a magazine that can be loaded via stripper clip or if you want to get fancy you can buy larger semi detachable mags. It has a bayonet already installed. It also has enough accessories if you want to tacticool it instead of running it in glorious stock configuration.
