What does /k/ think of scout scopes? I'm getting an M1A and this seems like a better option than mounting a scope over the action.
>>
I never used one, but it just feels weird to me. That being said, is there any other way for SKS to get scoped?
>>
>>30570852
For what purpose?
If you're going to use a magnified optic anyways, what is the advantage vs a normal set up?
>>
>>30570852
Barrels kick and flex with every shot and change size based on heat, a sight mounted on a barrel would lose it's zero every time you shoot a few rounds.
>>
I think it's an interesting concept but I've never used one myself.
>>
>>30570873
PU Mounts.

Hunting/innawoods/shtf.
>>
>>30570885
It would be mounted on a railed forward handguard.
>>
>>30570885
if that was the case, it wouldnt matter where your sight was mounted. they would all lose zero as you shot your rifle.
>>
>>30570852

No, get a real scope. A nightforce compact is pretty much perfect for the M14 style. Get a Sadlak mount.
>>
>>30570873
No, and that's also why they're popular on M1As: Garand actions are open top like the SKS.
>>
>>30571030
Annnnd A normal set up doesn't do that....?
1.8- 10 Power optics are a thing. There are even magnified optics with very large fields of view with large eyes boxes, reticles that can be used with both eyes , etc etc

.>>30571080
I think what he was trying to say, is there is a larger chance for that to happen when it is bolted to the barrel like that. Personally I don't agree, but I think it'd do some nasty things to the harmonics of the rifle and might damage lower quality optics.

You are now aware of the " cowboy companion SKS" imported way back when. This is not mine, but I do own one like it, they are handy guns.
>>
>>30571146
I'm concerned that a normal set up could cause ejection failures do the the placement of the scope in relation to the action.
>>
>>30571139
Basset is better. Mounting is not a pain in the ass and you can quickly detach your scope if you are going to just use irons.

One of the main considerations I never really see brought up with scout scopes is how they affect the balance of the gun. A forward mounted aimpoint works great on an m1a but a heavier optic with more magnification would be awkward for me.
>>
>>30571197
Ahh, should have said that then. With the arms 18 Mount I used on my m1a nm, I did not have any issues with brass ejection while at the range, or on my oper8tor play house, But I did have one hang up while I was backpacking through the woods and chose to take a shot at some menacing tree stumps. This was likely human error/ twigs. But could have been the ammo I was using , it was the zq1 stuff for plinking.
>>
>>30571252
Exactly what kind of malfunction was it?

Hang up on the front portion of the mount when the op rod slammed forward, caught the rear end of the brass on it's way out, and it also didn't feed the second round. As in fully ejected the first round, but didn't feed the second, nor return to battery.

Something 'like' this.
>>
>>30571507
Ah shit that looks annoying.
>>
>>30571599
Doubly annoying when it happens the one time you actually need to shoot something.

This is the biggest load of shit I've seen today. The entire weapon flexes with every shot, to some degree. Doesn't mean that every sight loses its zero.

Didn't bother me much, just smacked it back and went on my marry way.

I've tried a long eye relief scope on my gunsite scout, couldn't get used of it, hated it and have since removed it and just fitted a standard scope above the action for now, might try an ACOG or red dot or something at some point.
Maybe I just have shit eyesight or something, I just wasn't comfortable using it.

Get an aimpoint with a 2MOA dot. The best you can hope for accuracy wise without extensive tuning in an M14 is 2MOA.

If you really want a scope check out the CASM M14.ca mount. You have to remove the rear sight but it's sturdy as fuck while giving enough clearance for ejecting brass.

Bassett mount(high or low is your preference, high needs a cheekriser, which you can get a kydex one on amazon for ~$50) . harris bipod. There is no other.

and maybe try to find one of these.
>>
>>30571775
I want to hunt with it, so there will definitely be some tuning involved. Also I really dislike the idea of not being able to take the scope off and keep shooting if it breaks.
>>
>>30571507
lol you better have 3 hands, or a SE bolt catch.

i'm usually not a huge fan of scopes as irons are just that much more fun. but decided to try it out and i have to say i do like it. both eyes open, 1.5x is pretty fun.
>>
>>30572138
Think it would be doable with 2-4x magnification?
>>
>>30570852
They're fucking ugly.
>>
>>30572870
it could be that scope goes to 4x. personally it gets a little uncomfortable after 2x for me but thats just me.
>>
>>30573091
Interesting. I might cave and get a normal mount.

thats because you have it mounted to far forward. ive got the same optic and its mounted right in front of the irons. it has less eye relief than a standard scout scope.
>>
>>30571811
You can see the irons under a sadlak mount without removing the scope.
>>

That doesn't mean you don't need magnification dumbass.
>>
>>30576123
At this stage I'm just getting a basset mount and a primary arms 1-6x scope with an acss reticle.
