This was three or four magazines with the .50AE barrel. I shot a mix of 300 grain Speer Gold Dot and Hornady XTP.
.44 Magnum is about like .45 acp+p out of a full size 1911. .50AE is like .44 Magnum from a four inch revolver.

That's as heavy as an 8" S&W 500 and it's firing a smaller round. Handguns in general have very manageable recoil if you have proper form.

I'll concede the point. It's been a few years since I took those pics, and I distinctly remember putting at least two or three mags on paper. I think what looks like three touching on. The top has at least one more there. I probably didn't use full magazines or something. I remember wanting to put the gun on paper when I got the .50 barrel for it. I've since gotten a .357 barrel and bolt. It's like shooting 9mm out of a full sized Glock, except with more muzzle flash.

There's also this misconception that it was designed by IMI to stop cars with at checkpoints, this is false, it's designed in America by Magnum Research, who made a contract with IMI to manufacture it since they themselves lacked the tooling and facilities to do it themselves at the time.

The problem is no matter what caliber you get the overall gun is the same width. As such a lot of people can't get a good grip around the weapon to fire properly.
I have a .357 version of the DEP and I really like it. However with such variation in ammo, I notice a lot of folks use severely under powered ammo which causes many problems not present in the higher powered.

This. The gun's weight and fixed barrel make it a really accurate pistol. If you can properly grip it and use the right ammo, the thing is a tack driver. About the only negative thing about it is that it's finicky as hell with ammo, but otherwise it's a fun gun to hit steel at 25 yards.

nailed the big reasons for it. Essentially you need to use very hot jacketed loads in order for the gas tapping system to cycle properly. Most .44 mag and .357 mag ammo is loaded with the assumption you'll be firing this out of a revolver which have different pressure tolerances. The DE depends on very hot loaded rounds in order to have enough gas to properly cycle the action, otherwise you end up with a short stroke or a misfeed on every shot.

The .45 is just a generic 1911 with the Desert Eagle branding put on the slide for marketing purposes.
They don't have anything to do with the actual Desert Eagle pistols in terms of form, function or purpose.
It's kind of like how the Jericho 941 was nicknamed "Baby Eagle" because it vaguely had some lines which looks similar, but it isn't a Desert Eagle at all.

I reload for it. I would avoid moly/powder coated bullets honestly. The wording i've gotten from reloaders is that premium jacketed bullets are really the only safe things to use due to the finicky nature of the gas port. I use the stuff from xtreme bullets and charge it with 23.5 grains of wither Hodgdon's H-110 or Winchester W296 and it works great. Makes a nice big boom.
