Most digging in anything other than sand was using the shovel blade in the 90* position as a mattock to hack out.
Can't do that with the triangle handle.
Best old-school was the spring-catch model instead of the screw-collar as you could swap quickly between mattock blade and pick blade rather than leaving both out and risking smacking yourself with the pick end while swinging the tool in the bottom of a pit
