What do you guys recommend for an inexpensive drill press that won't shit the bed on me or fuck up my 80% projects?

Not OP, but I have a drill press and recently purchased a couple of 80% lowers to play with. I went with the easy jig route instead because it's a lot quicker and easier than using a drill press. Routers are more naturally suited for completing 80% lowers than a drill press.

Look on Craigslist for an old craftsman or something. Antique tools often very high quality.

Get a CNC, they're cheap theses days.

How did you drill out the holes?

A cordless drill? Why on earth would that be better than a drill press?

t. guy who has finished two 80%s with an EZjig

Get a decent drillpress, but nothing too fancy unless you are getting into DIY in general. Get a router jig though for the milling, its much safer. You really dont want to side load a drillpress.

Anyone with questions regarding 80%s, ask away, I have built 3 now.

People say that but at my school I have a mill and a drill press and the chucks don't really look any different. The only thing that looks different is the base plate, so what's the actual difference?
>>
>>30561687
Or underage
>>
>>30561747
Its not the actual chuck, its the bearings on the shaft. They will get worn out and completely ruin a drill press. furthermore, most cheap drillpresses have jacobs taper chuck mount designs, which don't have a way to retain the chuck. This can cause the chuck to launch. I have personally seen a chuck go flying across the shop back when I was in HS, and its like a 2lb piece of jagged steel (to be fair, it wasnt from sideloading).

It's stupid as fuck to assume that anyone who would want an 80% lower is some sort of criminal.

BTW, what's it like being a dindunuffin?
>>
>>30562342
This. I could buy an AR if I want, but building it is something to do.

In fact, im deciding now if I want to build an 80% 1911 or Sig P229. It will end up more than if I just buy one new, but I want to build one.
>>
>>30562383
In my case, I already have a 6920 that was purchased legally and I want to keep stock.
>>
>>30562383
Been thinking about a 1911 80% as well...
>>
>>30562342
I'm a Californian, but I also think it would be fun. Gonna build a .308 AR. Well probably 2 lowers and register one.
>>
>>30562468
Its a bit more involved but I would make it match grade; nothing but the best on it, and a very precise fit. I would probably even get it engraved. As for the Sig, its much easier and can be done by hand in about a day.

I may do a Sig to practice cutting rails and then do a 1911. You can use the same jig for both so tooling isnt too expensive.
>>
>>30562383
where can you get 80% 229s?

On a similar note, I'm trying to make a homebuilt .22 LR

What off the shelf hardware store parts can I use for a barrel?

what rpms did you run your router/drillpress at for the various operations and where did you get your tooling?
>>
>>30561650
califag here

bought an 80% b/c it's the only realistic way to get an ar pistol
>>
>>30561006
I used a skil I got from walmart. worked fine. Use an easyjig

modulus jig fucking sucks. tedious to use (due to how you have to take it apart almost every step), and very easily damaged (there's a new version with harden steel though)

Also shit customer support
>Tough luck. You want replacement parts? Don't bother, just buy a new one
>>
>>30561006
I've had that exact Skil for about 5 years now and would definitely recommend it as a drill press. I haven't used it to make a lower, but it has seen its fare share of steel and aluminum. Just remember not to get shitty drill bits. A good drill bit will go a long way to making your finished product nicer.
>>
>>30562619
For drilling I ran at max speed for my drill press, I cant remember. As for routing, I ran it at ~20000 rpm.

Sadly you cant find a new parts kit for Sigs. Greedy bastards control parts so tightly.

From polymer80? Not particularly. I would wait until they release an updated design. First Gen will still have some bugs to work out.

get something with a digital gauge or micrometer.

or you will regret it senpai

legally? rifled .22lr barrels.
iirc you can't make smooth bore firearms except for BP and shot without them being NFA stamped.
>>

Why don't you use a mill instead of shelling out specifically for the bubba option?

Why don't you just buy a gun off the shelf or make one from scratch instead of buying into Totse.com tier memes?

come on mang. Drill press bearings are not intended for milling operations.

Wait for Harbor freight to have a sale on their shitty chinese sieg X2 mini milling machine, and then grab the coupon they always have online for 20-25% off any singe item, and then bother the dumbest looking cashier they have about it until they let you combine the offers.

Should be able to snag a milling machine for under $350
