Target practice general thread?
Hey /k/, been practicing on my P229. I have less than 1000 rounds through it but I'm struggling to train out the transition from DA to SA. As I pull the trigger I must be tightening my grip and pulling it down and right correct? Should I hold tighter from the start or looser and just learn to relax?

Also, what sort of drills do anons like to do with pistols?
>draw from holster, control pair center mass (from DA to SA)

Pic related, at 10 yards, doing drill in greentext.

Check this out, would this be a cool way to practice fundamentals? Instead of going to range I could shoot .22LR in back yard and the neighbors wont be disturbed.

>be me
>live on 13 acres so am legally aloud to shoot shotgun/pistol in back yard
>shooting 200 rounds of 9mm every saturday might piss off neighbors
>so most of time shoot at range
>shoot .22LR and no one would even notice
>become operator

You seem to yank the trigger a bit (if you're righty). A smoother, straight back triggerpull should help you out.

Your grip should be firm & solid, but no gorilla gripping. You don't need to try & crush your firearm.

Also try push/pull:
Push forward with your main hand and pull back towards you with your support hand wrapped around the front of the pistol grip. It might give you more stability.

And backstory on this range visit.

>be me
>third time going to this indoor range and doing drills from holster
>very safe, make sure muzzle pointed downrange when I rack/decock finger off trigger when transitioning to/from holster
>RSO comes out and says "no holsters without manager approval', "cannot put the range table down"
>is this typical of most indoor ranges?

Two guys next to me did mag dump a .308 next to me with the table down and the range/store all turned and looked. They are allowed to but it drew attention, I think the rules for holsters has always been but no one enforces it but the .308 guy attracted attention.

IDK wth I'm doing wrong. I am trying to keep it sort of fast should I just slow down?

>>30559899
Dry firing to practice this would prolly help that. That push/pull thing sounds very promising as well thanks for the input.
>>
>>30559879
>>30559841
Yeah I'm looking at my/your group it looks like SA is ok but literally half my shots (every other shot it DA) is low and left so I'm not very good with DA. I need to practice that a lot more.
>>
>>30559959
>Dry firing to practice this would prolly help that. That push/pull thing sounds very promising as well thanks for the input.

Also make sure your trigger finger touches the trigger with the pad of your finger, not the joint. Pull straight back, not sideways.
>>
>>30559995
Hmm. I notice the grip on my 229 is smaller I may be over gripping it. Do I rotate my grip to adjust my fingers resting point or just move my finger a bit? So my finger will be arched away from the gun a bit.

>Do I rotate my grip to adjust my fingers resting point or just move my finger a bit? So my finger will be arched away from the gun a bit.

Hard to tell without seeing you shoot. Experiment a bit. See what works.

Shooting with the joint instead of the pad is possible, but generally is something oldskool DA revolver shooters do. It requires far more training to get right.
>>
>>30560056
Hmm. Yeah only one way to find out.
I am feeling good though I can draw and pop two rounds off in under 5 seconds. I'd consider that healthy for my level of required utility.

What do you like to shoot anon?

Any input on the 22LR conversion for plinking?

See pic.

I don't shoot defensively and I don't have any compacts. So I'm not sure any advice of mine carries over directly.
I have some experience shooting IPSC/BPSA, but that's it.

Oooo I like your tastes. Yeah I guess thats what I sort of liked. After college I want to work for ATF or something cool. So I'm trying to shoot well and am in really good shape so I'm ready.

.22LRs will obviously allow you to learn fundamentals cheaply and without flinching.

No real input on that specific conversion though. The Sig Mosquito (made by GSG, not Sig Sauer) was total trash. Totally worthless. Sig discontinued those.

If the conversion kit is decent and you can mount it on your current pistol, it will obviously be a good training aid.

The CZ75 Kadet is a great learning tool for the CZ75 owners for instance. If the Sig kit is remotely like that, it would be nice to own. But Sig has a bad track record with cheap .22LRs... The Hammerli X-Esse (aka Sig Trailside) is pretty great, but as said, the cheaper Mosquito is junk. (same as the Walther P22)

>After college I want to work for ATF

That's sort of saying you like to smoke weed so you'll join the DEA. ;)

But all kidding aside, the ameri/k/unts could use gun lovers in the ATF, but know that you'll be looked down upon by virtually all sport shooters and collectors in the USA.

kek, I loose, good one anon. Yeah I kind of think getting more good people in these institutions will help our situation. Better than law enforcement though. Make traffic stops until you get shot, or shoot someone defending your life and get your life ruined anyway.

Maybe I can find some review vids on the .22lr kit though. Its made of machined aluminum since a .22 can't blow back all that slide mass haha. Not like I need a .22 to be reliable, a few failures would just teach me immediate action haha.

Alu is fine.
Pot metal is usually more problematic.

>Not like I need a .22 to be reliable, a few failures would just teach me immediate action haha.

An unrealiable gun is not worth owning. Your .22LR should be perfectly reliable if you use the ammo meant for it. (so no high velocity in a standard velocity gun or vice versa)

Nother question for a fellow sigfag. My P229 has a light/laser on it. Its my home defense/duty style edition pistol haha. If I wanted to carry something smaller but very similar ergo/trigger wise I was thinking of getting the P225 (single stack 9mm).

Would it be safe to say that a p225 trigger would feel the same as my p229 thus requiring less training on each individual gun?

>pic related
>mine
>>
>>30560529
Then again why be a faggot, just dime out on 9mm and train like I wanna be able to fight. Other than noise which I can just talk to the neighbors prolly they are both hunters.
>>
>>30560545

I have no idea how similar those triggers are or how similar the grip is (thickness, geometry). I only use a Sig X-Five (SAO). I'm not very familiar with their carry guns and gun mounted laser pointers are illegal here. ;)

>>30560568

.22LR is a fun way to train, I wouldn't disregard it. The older I get, the more I appreciate my Beretta 87 Target.

That sucks, my lazer/light makes feel operator as fuck. It makes it sort of impractical to get a holster and cc though. I havn't tried. Maybe I should. You see my logic is that I own all 9mm, so I can stock one caliber, train on one caliber ect. Then all my weapons are S/DA. Yeah I'll still think on the 22 conversion maybe its worth the money.

I own
>92fs
>p229
>p230 (the one exception to my 9mm rule but still at S/DA)

So it I got a P225 I'd have a very slim single stack 9mm that I could cc super comfy. The better half in my life likes to play with the P230 so I'd let her carry that and I'd have my 9mm trifecta.

Full size: 92fs
compact tacticool: p229 with lazer/light
subcompact:p230/P225

Here's a 3 part video on how to manage shooting DA. This guy knows his shit with shooting Berettas but it applies to Sigs too.

>Would it be safe to say that a p225 trigger would feel the same as my p229 thus requiring less training on each individual gun?

I don't know if this may be true or not but perhaps a P225 being ~20-35 years old may be very broken in thus giving a relatively smoother DA pull. I only have a German 226 and don't remember how other Sigs shot when I used to be noguns.

If I were you, look at the P239. It's a much smaller P22X series type gun and holds the same 8+1 9mm as the P225.

One thing is for sure is that the P6 variant of the P225 does have a considerably heavier DA trigger pull.

>>30561649
Thanks anon, sweet vids.

>>30561724
I admire youre 239 advice, I am strongly considering it but I think the 225 felt MUCH more comfortable when I held it. And you say "much" smaller. It was a few fractions of an inch smaller width wise and same way shorter. You think I'd notice the difference iwb (4 oclock carry)

The p239 felt a bit like a pocket rocket. If I wanted something that small I'd just carry my p230.

Another target shooting question. For sake of target shooting in the context of self defense/duty practice, do you think a lot of practice on bull's eye targets could inhibit my muscle memory.

In that I would not be trained to find center mass as well as I was trained to shoot a pretty obvious circle within a circle.

And why the fuck do all silhouettes put the center ring literally center mass and no in the "kill ring" (slightly higher on the chest).
>>
>>30559841
The srt trigger really helps with da to say. It's 100% worth it to get

No. You can go shoot steel, ipsc targets, index cards and cardboard. It doesn't matter.

Well seeing as I have a P229 Enhanced Elite it already has it, and youre retarded.
>>
>>30559959
I had the same issue until my instructor literally put his finger over mine and pulled for me. Stage the trigger and then pull it super slowly and smoothly. Don't anticipate, just pull slow enough to feel the break, let it surprise you and then keep through with your followup.

>>30559935
Yes. Most accidents are from holster
