I feel like it did unfairly bear the burden of the whole "dogfighting is obsolete" thing. I would also imagine the transition to the F-15, 16, and 18 probably had a lot to do with electronics and computing advancements that the F-4 was never designed to capitalize on. That's largely conjecture though.

I was very surprised when I saw the footage of them escorting the Russian bombers into Syria.
I'm sad that the F-14, my favorite plane ever, only exists in the US now as museum plinth. But it's cool to see a few flying in Iran still, even if they had to bastardize them. Too bad a few couldn't have been kept in flying condition for airshows.

What is the advantage of having the exhaust below the horizontal stabilizer? And what is the advantage of having downward swept horizontal stabilizer?
>>
>>30561173
>What is the advantage of having the exhaust below the horizontal stabilizer?
None really - it's just a decision they made to get the engine placement they wanted.

>And what is the advantage of having downward swept horizontal stabilizer?
Longitudinal stability. You need a certain size of vertical surfaces to ensure stability. McDonnell Douglas originally planned to have flat wings and tail surfaces (see)
>>30558496
but they found stability issues. Rather than rework the whole plane around a new tail, they just canted up the outer wing sections and canted down the tail.

>>30560175
I think it's hilarious that Iran sent a couple of F-4s to intercept a drone and then they got intercepted by F-22s crawling up their tailpipe, and then dropping in directly in front of them. SURPRISE, MOTHERFUCKER.

Yes, there was a need at the time for an improved fighter and improved fighter bomber to use against the Soviet Frontal Aviation forces. The F-4s were still going to be used as bomb trucks but were expected to suffer heavy losses in any likely large conflict. Thus the F-15 was intended for air superiority, and the F-16 as a air-combat partner that also was good at strike roles.

I kind of wish the F-4s got another round of upgrades, including modern engines and avionics. They'd be superb electronic-warfare planes or bomb trucks with that big fat radome, second seat, and oodles of hard points.

>tfw Israel is responsible for like 70% of the F-4's air-to-air kill record.
>>
>>30562501
They didn't really have that many low-time airframes. Much of the fleet had been flown pretty hard by the early 80s. The Israelis and I think the Turks both did major upgrades like you mention. No idea how much maintenance the improved versions need.
>>
>>30562315
Dos Gringos?
>>
>>30562591
You're thinking of the F-16, this is the F-4's kill record:

Vietnam War (US Navy) 40
Vietnam War (USMC) 3
Vietnam War (USAF) 108
Soviet border clash 1976 (Iran) 1
Iran-Iraq War (Iran) 68
War of Attrition (Israel) 26
Yom Kippur War (Israel) 55
Syrian border clashes 1974-1981 (Israel) 4
Lebanon War (1982) (Israel) 1

Total of 306 kills, 28% are Israeli ones which is still fairly impressive. Though the Iranian claim in the Iran-Iraq War is probably dubious/unreliable so these numbers might be inaccurate.

F-16 has a total of 76 kills though, of which 57 are Israel (76%).

f-4 was designed before the advent of fly by wire. You could modernized the f-4 but if you're going to use fly by wire you might as well use a design that benefit more from inherent instability.

I think part of why I like the Phantom so much is that it was the last of our planes to have such awesome nose and tail art while in wartime service.

>What is the advantage of having the exhaust below the horizontal stabilizer?
Keeping the tail high helps mitigate tailstrike issues. Keeping the engines and nozzles forwards near the CG lets you employ big-ass heavy engines without introducing major weight and balance issues.
