Actually yeah they've done it with cockroaches before. One of the groups in my engineering senior design class did that. Basically they remove the antennae and then they wire in some electrodes. The electric stimulus makes it feel like they're hitting a wall so they'll turn left or right or back up. Unfortunately there's no way to make them go forward automatically, they have to do that through their own will. In addition, they get overstimulated after a little while and need a cool down period.
A company provides open source info and a microcontroller for it. It's hopefully that they will be used for search and rescue missions in tight spaces like in the rubble after 9/11 for example.
