Depends on what they were doing. I know early on everyone except VDV and other special units (who were using AK74s and AKS74s) were still using AKMs, but I'm not sure what year it was when AK74s/AKS74s became more common with everyone outside of VDV and such.

Were they still using the Chicom rig or did they carry mags another way?
>>
>>30534711
>>30535526
The Soviet soldiers equipment varies and depends on the year. Early on they used exactly the same kind of equipment they had in europe and other places. Later on they started to issue chest rigs, different flak jackets and other stuff likes shoes, clothing and so on.

>>30535176
Look at it this way.

AK-74 got introduced as the main weapon and the replacer of the AKM in 1973. The afghan-soviet conflict started in 1979. A good amount of time has passed to render the AK-74 as the main weapon for the soviet motorised infantry man.

Okay then.

Back to track then. There were several flak vests/body armor developed by the soviets during the soviet-afghan war. The first one was the 6B1, a vest designed before the conflict and was produced in limited numbers (thousand or so). It used alumium plates with several layers of nylon and gave enough protection stop bullets from a PPSh at a distance of 50 meters in addition of stopping shrapnel. It was used by the Spetsnaz groups that killed president Amin in Operation Storm-333 and was effecive since his guards were equiped with MP5's.

The 6B1 is one of the weakest of compared to it's older brothers. It may be comparable to the M12 vests developed in the US after world war 2 which used Aluminum plates and nylon. Considering both was devloped in the 50's.

The 6B2 was a more advance version of the 6B1 in terms of performance, it used 1.5mm thick titanium plates with layers of ballistic aramid which gave it good all around protection against fragments and pistol rounds. It was soon however found out that afghanistan was a very deadly place and there was a great need to give the troops protection against AK-47's. But the 6B2 seems to be the most widely used vests amongst the soviets since it is pretty often seen in photos instead of its stronger brothers whom are instead commonly seen in chechnya instead.

Okay then.

The 6B3 along with the 6B4 was one of the first vests developed in afghanistan and was used in large scale that provided protection from rifle fire. Now the information is somewhat confusing but there were different versions of the 6B3 and 6B4 which had different protection and weight. The 6B3 used titanium plates while the 6B4 used ceramic. Both had very heavy versions topping in at 10-15 kilo and was found to be very fucking heavy and was not that good when trying to chase dushmans. But the guards would love them since they only defend.

Do you think the gear Soviet soldiers carry in MGSV is kinda accurate?

Aside from the fictional guns, of course.

Two soldiers on the BMP can be seen wearing 6B3 vests but one of the soldiers is weaing it very strange without the back cover.

>>30537118
They are extremely well done. Good 6B2 vests and even special vests developed for the airborne troops can be seen. Kinda surprising since I expected them to go fictional considering the guns are fictional but I was wrong.

I had a feeling the gear was fairly accurate.

This is a Soviet heavy trooper from the game. They're usually armed with LMG's.

It uses parts from real equipment. The helmet, parts of the vest, the belt and mag pouches etc.

Well if he uses a RPK styled LMG then it would be okay but if not then some of the mag pouches are useless.

The ultimate vest developed in the conflict was the 6B5, it used lessons learnt from the 6B3 and 6B4. It used both ceramic and titanium plates for protection but sadly it came to late to see action in Afghanistan. However it did see action during the 1991 coup in Moscow and was used heavly in Chechnya and conflicts after it and even as new as the 2008 russo-georgian conflict.

6B3 vest was seen to be used by the Ukraniens during the 2014 crimean crisis.

Now that is all for the moment. I do alot of pictures which I have not posted yet which I have found on the interwebs but I will post them later on /k/ with additional information with better details.
