Whats the best multipurpose knife style?
Something for light outings without needing to pack 30 other bladed tools.

Just a basic knife. It cuts things, it stabs things and it slices things. It's not too big or too heavy. It's great.
>>
>>30531102
And it cant chop.

go with a Mora 2000 if you want a good solid no-nonsense knife that won't fail you.

I've used mine as my go-to camping/fishing/general outdoors activities knife for years. Heck i've even shaved with it a couple of times.
>>

So bring an axe
>>
>>30531123
Firewood? Yes it can. Living trees, of course not. It's a knife, not an axe.
>>
>>30531145
Carrying an axe goes against the purpose of a light pack.

then carry a saw. The knife and saw will be lighter than anything large/heavy enough to chop

>>

>not carrying five knives on you in an apocalyptic scenario

It's like you don't even want to be Logen Ninefingers
>>
>>30531176
Get a small survival hatchet or a fold-up axe. They are pretty lightweight and don't take up much space in/on your pack.

besides, a good axe for chopping and a solid knife for carving/stabbing/slicing will always be better than a kukri or other middle-of-the-road large-bladed knife
>>
>>30531221
Because the kukri is only good for cutting through bushes, bamboo and other light vegetation. Try chopping spruce logs for firewood or anything bigger than a year-old birch and you'll see why the kukri is stupid.
>>
>>30531221
Why create a thread asking a question when you already believe you have the answer posted in OP?

Kukri are larger heavier and harder to handle then a simple knife, they are also lighter weaker and less effective then a hatchet. Jack of all trades is master of none.
Also if you only have 1 blade do you want to be chopping with it? If it snaps or dulls you are fucked
>>
>>30531215
Underrated. I was thinking exactly this, only freezing under a pine.
>>
>>30531269
theyre usually about 8 inches or so, so if the chopping part dulls or snaps then you still have a good amount of blade left. but considering the size of them theyre not going to snap easily unless youre prying with them.

Tradition, knowledge and actual usage. I bet half the tacticool knives sold in the US never actually get used.
>>

Because if Finns ans Swedes want tacticool shit they can just order it from America, obviously
>>
>>30531221
People don't want to admit that a 3rd world country has had such a great knife for centuries. Its like how Europeans refused to use the windmill stroke like Native Americans in swimming competitions because they thought it was too barbaric and lost to the Native Americans.
>>
>>30531027
If you want to carve wood, slice your onion, gut a fish, stab a bitch and do all the other finer points of life you do in life with a knife
> get a puukko

If you want to do some light chopping, butcher an animal, do some slightly awkward slicing, build a shelter or slice a bitch, while being light
>get a leuku

If you want to saw things under, say, 8cm in diameter
>get a folding saw

If you actually want to hew down trees, drive in stakes, chop firewood, break large bones or open a bitch-skull, and you aren't such a pussy about carrying a little bit of weight on something actually useful
>get a forged hatchet, or better yet, an axe.

Here you go. Easy.
>>
>>30531395
>>If you want to saw things under, say, 8cm in diameter
You could get much larger saw than that, like Silky Big Boy. 14 inch (36mm) blade will eat trees for breakfast and it's only 1lb
>>
>>30531610
My bad, I never actually used folding saws for much. But over 8cm of dry! wood if became a nuisance and I took an axe instead.

There isn't one.

That's why you're asking this question instead of going to Amazon and buying the thing that everyone always says is the best.

>>30531266
>the kukri is only good for cutting through bushes, bamboo and other light vegetation.

The kukri's blade is usually 10 to 12 inches and is never less than 5mm thick, usually being in the 7-10mm range. That is not a knife for light vegetation, you pulled that out of your ass.

Pic related is a knife for light vegetation.

Because they arent actually very good. they are totally useless as an actual knife, they arent as good at chopping as an axe, not as good at clearing light foliage as a machete. theyre essentially a less effective hatchet. why attempt to carry a knife which does everything really shit, when you could carry a 6 inch fixed blade which is a hundred times better for doing knifey work, a small hatchet which is a hundred times better for chopping, or if you're in light brush, then a light weight machete will clear it a hundred times better

pic related, my kukris, they're cool as hell but not very good at anything.
>>
>>30532480
Exactly my expirience so far. And also, kukri isn't fuckin' light, either. As >>30532231 said, it's thick as fuck, and thus, heavy. Damn, for a weight of one large-ish kukri you could bring a hatchet, a knife and a set of sharpening equipment!

But srsly, as someone who has done camping in both USA and the Philippines: there isn't one. It's highly contextual.

In the USA, I find, thanks to Northern Hemispherical hardwoods like pine or maple, you'd need a hatchet. While here in the Philippines, a bolo would be just fine for most tropical wood, since they're softer than stuff found up North. Not to mention a Hatchet is fuckstupid versus bamboo as it breaks it like a hammer as opposed to leaving a clean cut.
>>
Why don't you faggots check the catalog before starting another thread
>>
>>30531269

Kukri aren't jack of all trades. They're very very good at what they are made to do. But what they are made to do is chop through large amounts of lighter vegetation.

If you're not in a jungle or similar environment where thats necessary, then you shouldn't be carrying a kukri.

Kukris are pretty good.
Don't believe the dude who said they're for light bushwork, I've cut down small trees with my Kukri that had a footlong blade.
Granted it took a while, but.

And don't believe the anons who say it doesn't work as a knife either, it carves/whittles/etc. just fine, so long as you don't use the heavier part, which is for chopping.
You have to use the pic related part for that stuff.

And if you're worried about the edge chipping or dulling then you probably bought a tacticool Kukri, every traditional Kukri comes with a file and sharpening blade included in the sheathe.

>>
>>30533666
no one is saying that a kukris can't do the job, just that it's kind of bad at it when there are other options
>>
>>30533703
Well, I probably own everything mentioned here, save for a small hatchet.
My axe is too cumbersome for a light pack.
My machete is A. Quite long and B. Shit against thick wood, though, it's a little easier to use for carving, but imo it's a little too thin for abuse.
My little knife is too small to cut anything, but its small enough to the point it'd be easy to bring along.
My huge-ass bowie isn't as good at cutting shit as my Machete and is a laughingstock compared to my Kukri when it comes to that sort of work.
I've used a friend's small hatchet before and I liked it, but it also lacks a bit of the utility purpose of a Kukri when it comes to whittling or carving things, though it is better at dealing with slightly larger trees than my Kukri is.
Personally if I HAD to take something, I'd take my Kukri compared to everything else I own, living here in Michigan.
But, I will say, if I lived where the bush was lighter, I'd probably bring my machete and a small knife.

>>
>>30531314
Well tacticool knives are for self defense idiot. Most of us don't go around stabbing people with our benchmades and cold steels.

So theyd hardly get used. Tactical knives are mostly for self defense. Personally I carry a Spyderco Endura and use it for daily tasks.
>>
>>30536488
not original poster, but most of the tacticool ones never see the light of day, and when they do, its usually neckbeards opening things with it in public.
>>
what exactly is wrong with tactical knives?
>>
>>30537431
Of course not. And neither do fire extinguishers. They're there as a back up to a hand gun that also most likely will never be used other than the range.
>>
>>30537492
Nothing. Its just that people who use knives for daily tasks think those knives are for the same purpose but They're not.

Some people say the Cold Steel one is actually pretty good and true to the design.

It takes a few liberties but nothing too major.
There's one by Condor that's SUPER fucking thick and even shorter than a normal kukri.

I have just bought pic related, it's called the Terava Skrama. I don't have a pic of my own yet because I keep forgetting to take my camera with me when I test it, but I will soon. Don't let thew size of the handle fool you- the blade length is 9.5 inches. It's a pretty amazing knife, and the closest I've ever got to an all-purpose knife. The long handle is great, you can put all your fingers toward the back to get the same chopping power as a small hatchet and hold it closer to the blade to perform normal tasks or light chopping. It chops so well. The majority o the blade is ground to 35 degrees so it can withstand chopping tasks, whereas the 5cm closest to the handle is ground to 24 degrees, making it easier to carve with which works so so well. Can't recommend it enough for an all-purpose woods knife. Fits in a pack well or can go on your side. You can even buy a molle back sheath to attach it to your pack. And the best part is it costs 60usd. (leather or molle sheath is extra but comes with a standard plastic sheath)

>>30531223
Well you can never have to many knives
