Felon here, was convicted in Nebraska, live in SD and plan to move to Northern Minnesota. my question is if I see a bear am I legally allowed to defend myself against it with a crossbow/bow/etc? I realize it would probably take more than a crossbow to take down a bear.
Also it was a non violent felony about 8 years ago, if that helps.
I see no reason why not. But don't expect sympathy from anyone if you kill someone (even in self defence)
Also, ditch the middle ages tech and grab a black powder shotgun/revolver.
I don't think there's any problem with a felon just owning one. DNR might think you're poaching, However.
I'd recomend bear mace over a cossbow though.
Black powder weapons aren't usually considered firearms, you know.
Get a cap and ball revolver from the mail.

As far as I have researched on a federal basis I can't own a firearm regardless if its violent or not.

I have considered that, as far as I am aware I have to wait another 3 years before I can restore my rights.
