Hello. I recently moved to Illinois and am looking for good gun stores. Naturally there are plenty of dick's, Walmarts and Cabela's nearby but I want something a little smaller, and in particular one that is very friendly to ffl mail orders. Anyone have any experience?
In particular I've heard Maxon and schranks smoke n gun are good. One issue with Maxon though is they have questionable friendlyness to customers which are under 21.

I go to that exact gun store every week. I mostly just check in to see whats new. They sell used guns way above what they should be. For example, they are selling an SKS for $700. Also their ammo prices are so so; however, it is the closest place within a 50 mile radius of me. I would recommend Marengo Gun. It may be a bit of a drive, but they are fantastic. Look into it OP

You're not totally wrong about Maxons. I grew up shooting there and was always welcomed, they let me hold whatever I wanted. Always had time for stupid 12 year old me. But over the years, the old-guy staff has been slowly replaced by 25-35 year olds who aren't as laidback and the rules have become more paranoid and needlessly restrictive. That being said, if you're under 21, they'll probably distrust you right off the bat. Not mistreat you, just very wary. If you go regularly enough though they're good people and I'm sure they'd be happy to help their new friendo out.
Don't know much about Chocagoland other than Aurora Sportsman Club which is nice. Down by Kankakee we have the ISRA range which is fucking outstanding. Here in Champaign there isn't much but High Caliber is the best indoor range I've been to.

Not that guy but UIUC alum, High Caliber was cool to me and my buddies but we were all old as fuck and had our own guns. There's Dave's if you follow University out of town to the east for a bit. It's a proper fudd shop. Also in a shooting club in St. Joe's the trap n skeet club go to.
just use a kitchen table FFL if you want them for transfers, fuckwad. in fact, there's a few in the farther north/northwest suburbs that i remember being well recommended.
