I agree that the T-14 is the ugliest tank.
Since the late 1940s Soviet/ Russian tanks have look decent due to the low-profile hull and the rounded dome turrets. They looked appealing and their design reflected how they would be used (In quick attacks, overrunning seizing enemy positions.)
The T-14 is a departure from that look and looks more Western. Except that it is ugly and has no reason to be that big. Not unless Russia has also abandoned the basis for which their armored forces were built for, the previously mentioned fast attacks.
Maybe a new turret can improve it, but until then I'm calling it the ugliest MBT.

Well the looks part is purely opinion, so I respect if you disagree with me on that.
But is it really on par? Very little of it has been seen and the weight of it is displayed as 48 tons. Compared to Western tank which Western tanks that are roughly 60 tons. Even if you subtract the 2 tons of wire on the Abrams (And whatever else it is on the Leopard 2, Challenger 2, etc.) there's still a big difference between that and the T-14. On Western tanks the weight goes mostly into armor. So the question is: What did the T-14 ditch to save that weight?

The hull has to be both higher and longer to accommodate all the crew sitting in it as well as the bigger engine and of course the now vertically stored projectiles. Then the turret is taller to house a much bigger gun whilst maintaining adequate elevation.

>So the question is: What did the T-14 ditch to save that weight?
Some of the turret armor weight. Also its 48 tons empty or without the armored skirts at least.
The wiki page is wrong- this:http://vpk.name/library/f/armata.html is both outdated and full of erroneous speculations. The unused T-99 code is indictment of that.

How much larger is the gun compared to the one on the T-90? Or is that space reserved for the planned 152mm? Looking at a supposed cutaway I can see how the shells are arranged for the autoloader, I'm not sure it would make a big difference if the ammo gets hit though.

>>30518978
So that's the weight of the vehicle without its armor packages and ammunition? I guess that would make up for some of the difference. Thanks for bringing that up because I did just do a quick google search for weights.
The T-14 does seem to be the comfiest MBT from the videos I've seen inside of it. But I'm curious how the T-14 and crew will perform when they're limited to cameras and monitors for target acquisition and engagements. No other country has gone beyond the prototype stages with that concept, so it's a gamble for Russia.

The 'west' has been trying to catch up with russian tank designs ever since before the WW2. Germany, the only relevant western armor designer, is now at least 15 years behind Armata program. The only modern MBTs coming close to be 'on par' with T-14 are K2 and Type10.

Just a reality check.

>Or is that space reserved for the planned 152mm?
Yes. Though I am of the opinion that they would never really need it, the relaxation of the projectile length limit gives them a lot of incentive to improve the projectiles rather than go to a newer gun. Doesn't help that the newer 125 mm APFSDS perform just slightly less in raw penetration than the older(read 80s) 152 mm APFSDS. Almost same situation with the 130 mm and the 140 mm in the West really.
>So that's the weight of the vehicle without its armor packages and ammunition?
The ERA on the front hull and the main armor array are integral so its included in the empty weight I think. And yes without ammo and a small amount of fuel I think, the tanks only really need to be under 50 tons to be able to be taken aboards most flatcars.
>But I'm curious how the T-14 and crew will perform when they're limited to cameras and monitors for target acquisition and engagements.
Probably not as bad as the pilots when radars replaced the human eye as the main sensor.
As an added bonus since the whole thing is controlled from screens the vehicles in themselves can be used for simulated training. Or you can watch movies and stuff I guess.

Only the Abrams (and the T-14 when it enters service) has blow-out panels for all its stowed rounds lol. The Chally 2 has stowed rounds all over the crew space, which didn't help it one bit when a HESH splatted against the commander's turret and sent hot fragments down the hatch. And the Leopard 2 has most of its ammo in the hull port-side without provisions for partitions and blow-out panels so it will end up just the same as that T-72.

Are you for real? The Rheinmetall people don't keep tabs on their competitors via popular media. Actually even a few googling back then would net you results that the Russians were cooking up something after the T-95 was cancelled way back in 2010 and it was the Armata.
>shiny to get countries to spend money.
nice meme. shame that it doesn't make sense because A)governments the world over are hesitant when procuring costly upgrades that aren't really needed, and B)If all they wanted was money then they are doing a pretty piss poor job with the 130 mm since it needs a brand new turret to use. which means more cost for the customer, the typical of which balks at L/55 upgrades cost let alone a newly built turret.
>>
>>30520898
Oh it was started WELL before the T-14 came about. It was on the drawing board as a mid 90's potential upgrade competing with the 140mm mounted on the 'Thumper' and a potential 80-100mm ETC cannon to counter emerging Soviet armored threats. So far from what's been released of the 130mm, it's unimpressive compared to what was envisioned in the 80's for the caliber, particularly when it comes to projected chamber pressure which is similar to the XM360 (which is only a 120mm with similar dimensions as the L44 but weighs almost half as much as the L44 and despite what's been reported by some is not ETC).

Except those rounds are all inert. The only combustable elements are stored in a contained bin in the most heavily armored part of the tank. The only reason the BoB incident set them off was the inside of the tank was on fucking fire at the time. In which case the crew would be dead/abandoned anyway.

>Only the Abrams (and the T-14 when it enters service) has blow-out panels for all its stowed rounds lol.

I'm pretty sure the K2 and Type 10 do as well, due to their autoloaders.

>single Chally destroyed in Iraq due to being hit in area not yet protected by Dorchester withcrew surviving

I get you're just trolling the vatnik, but it wasn't an area "not yet protected" that did it. The destroyed one was from a HESH shell that pretty much flew through an open hatch. You're thinking of an entirely separate event where the tank wasn't destroyed, and had a crewman injured.

It is one of those "you couldn't make this shit up" tier events.
>>

>Sauce for this. This is the first I've heard of it being as such.

You'll have to wait until I get home unfortunately for me to upload the pdf. At work for the next 5 hours. It's an interesting read from an old document from I want to say GDLS off the top of my head but I can't remember for certain. It comments about potential future armor developments expected by the mid-late 90s and possible counters. It brings up a caliber increase of 130mm as a near term interim solution and says something about it being a contender for what was expected to be the next West German MBT main armament and possibly an upgrade for the Leopard 2. Needless to say, it heavily extolls the virtues of the 140mm that they had fitted to the infamous 'Thumper' vehicle and claims it to be the most viable upgrade path while saying that ETC technology isn't ready yet and is expected to be viable and ready for the "FMBT" (Future Main Battle Tank) project to succeed the Abrams.

Interestingly they gave some outlines of potential designs of Soviet MBTs and they ended up coming up with something extraordinarily similar to the Object 477A, so either they had some espionage help to determine likely paths of Soviet armor development or great minds think alike.

The entire interior of the tank was on fire. Eventually that fire reached the ammo. Bang. Tanks generally aren't designed to have 120mm shells hit INSIDE them (Spray or direct, whichever you believe) and not have issues.

Have you seen videos from Syria and Iraq? The time for cook off greatly varies from tank and tank due to different damage suffered and alot of other factors. Some instantly explode while other take as long as a minute to start to cook off. In the case of the challenger 2 blue on blue then it seems to have happened rather fast but not instant.

Empty air sends the force of the shell in all directions instead of at one point. Its basic physics and it works ridiculously well.
