This is now a /k/ movie thread

Best submarine movie. Make sure you watch the 208 minute Directors cut.
>>
>>30510629
why not both?

I've been dying to ask this question -- how in the fuck did they resupply submarines with torpedoes while out at sea? I just can't picture how they get them in there. I'm sure there's just something I don't know or understand about how subs are designed.

This poster is hung on my wall. Fucking love Das Boot.
>>
>>30510761
They pull up to a supply ship, open up a big assed hatch, then use a crane to move them over.
>>
>>30510629
Book of this is great as well.
>>
>>30510761
The same way they resupplied in a dock, but from a boat instead of a dock.
It was pretty risky.
>>
>>30510768
Well, guess I'm buying a film poster today.

Tits, seems it isn't as simple as just typing 'Das Boot movie poster' into Amazon.
Ken Taylor seems to do pretty sweet film posters in general.

Ah, so the milk cow subs had a crane apparatus to deliver torpedoes, as well as groceries, mail, diesel, parts, etc.

I take it there's a big ass hatch on the top deck that opens. I've just never seen one open.
>>
This is by no means the greatest war movie ever but it features the M3 prominently and that's fuckin neato.
>>
>>30510820
>parody of das boot
Source?
>>
>>30510858
not a big ass hatch

the smaller, the better, no reason to make the hull weaker than it has to be
>>
Anyone ever see this one, Gentleman Officers, Save the Emperor

Well no, its a small ass hatch really (comparatively), 'big ass' hatches aren't a good idea if you want your submarine to be water tight.
>>
>>30510949
That looks like a pretty ass-clenching maneuver there.
>>
>>30510858

Not big and most U-Boat books will have a good description on the craziness/misery of loading new torpedoes from their racks topside down into the boat.

I recommend:

I love Das Boot's ending. Hey, you fucking krauts! The war's not over just because you had a bad day!
>>
>>30510980

I think it's great the first time but now sometimes wish it ended after they surface from being stuck on the bottom and start head back to La Rochelle.
>>
>>30510935
agreed

>>30510949
Thank you for this pic, this explains a lot, I just couldn't conceptualize how the fuck that worked. My stomach turns at the thought of doing this at sea.

>>30510964
Cheers, m8. I'll take a look at this.
>>
>>30510752

Even better is the 293 minute original uncut version.
>>
>>30510949
Did anything exist for the regular subs like the Type XXIII loading cradle? Where they could be put in dry dock and loaded directly through the tubes? I'm guessing not since the XXIII only had two torps (Kind of like the Japanese midget subs).

No problem, it's a great, great book. Almost all U-Boat (and naval memories in general) are written from an officers perspective so it's cool to read from a regular enlisted guys. Plus he is INCREDIBLY excited about being a U-boat sailor and was for the rest of his life, organizing reunions, moving to the U-505s final resting spot in Chicago, etc. and generally has no 'purple prose' dramatics. Not some anti-war melodramatic book nor is it the opposite. Just a proud sailor telling his story.

I am reading this right now which has a similar writing style, but from an officers viewpoint:

memoir* not memories.

Another great enlisted (and then works his way up to officer) story is the Kydd series by Stockwin:

https://julianstockwin.com/welcome-front-page/books-published/

It's incredible if you like technical age-of-sail things along with a great story. And again it's entirely unique in that it is from the prospective of a pressed man, so not even enlisted. Pressed into service from a tavern in his hometown and then goes on to volunteer.

Awesome, but various descriptions make me nervous that they are going to try and paint the u-boats as barbaric and such a bit...I sure hope not, just stick with the ideas of the original.
>>
>>30510768
I just found it for 50 bucks but I'm not really able to pay that much for a poster. Can you find it somewhere cheaper?
>>
>>30511002
German war films have this 'Everything in war is futile in the end' theme and I really like it.

I got you man. It's spendy, but it's a really high quality screen print poster.

Oh shit it's sold out. Sorry about that. Maybe keep your eyes peeled to see if they do a reprint.
>>
Good news for fans, they are making a sequel tv miniseries soon baSed on the other books.
