And then there are rounds that are literally metric as fuck - 7.5x54mm MAS, 8mm Mauser(7.92 when you measure them like Americans or British did but it was 8mm for Germans), 8x50R and 8x56R(Mannlicher), 8x50.5R(Lebel) etc. etc.
And note that metric system wasn't as dominant as it is now.
Of course the rounds themselves have very similar sizes as long as they fit the same role(for example light mortars range from somewhere between 50 to 75mm or 2 to 3 inches - convert metric to imperial and vice versa and you'll see it) but saying that Euro calibres are based on imperial measures is quite an overstatement.
