They both kill bretty good desu. "Magnum" means that it's stronger than the caliber implies, since 44 is a lower number than 45 even though the .44 magnum is ridiculously powerful. I'd just recommend a .45 Auto chill fampai

Just make all semiauto handguns do 1d8 damage and all revolvers do 1d12, small-caliber assault rifles do 2d8 and battle rifles do 2d12. Shotguns do 1d20. Problem solved.

The best gun for what? For the most "damage" per shot, a .50AE Desert eagle. For good magazine capacity and an easier time making repeated shots on target, any 9mm service pistol like a Glock 17, CZ75, Beretta 92 etc. For appealing to men over 50 with erectile dysfunction, a chromed 1911 with a bunch of customizations. For the Eastern European market, a Makarov PM. Etc,

.44 Magnum is substantially stronger than .45 acp.
One measurement used to classify the power of a given cartridge is "muzzle energy", usually expressed in foot pounds or "ft lbs".
For example, a common .45 acp cartridge generates 400 ft lbs of muzzle energy.
A typical .44 Magnum cartridge generates 800 ft lbs of muzzle energy, double that of .45 acp.
Various manufacturers make cartridges with more or less of a powder charge and heavier and lighter bullets. There are some .44 Magnum loads that are more than 1000 ft lbs of muzzle energy and equal the power of light rifles such as the AR-15 at short range.
I recommend looking up cartridges on Wikipedia and using the muzzle energy listed as a basis for the damage in your game.

In terms of muzzle energy, and assuming production pistols only, the Desert Eagle in .50AE.
In terms of practicality, as in the most powerful autoloading handgun you, or an oper8or, could reasonably carry, something in 10mm Auto. I recommend the Bren Ten for sheer style.
