I bought my first AK the other day.
I wanna try and find an optic for it. Is there any AK scope mount to picatinny rail that is actually good? Or better yet, does anyone know if there is any slavshit optic for ~$100 USD?

Hey guys, I'm looking for my first SHTF rifle (IE my first semi auto over .22lr) and I figured an AK platform would be the way to go. I mainly want it for target shooting; but being able to hunt with it in a pinch would be nice (deer primarily, maybe hogs or black bear).

How cheap do you want to go? FALs, G3s, AKs, and ARs are all fine for the job.
They vary in price, weight, and benefits and detraction.
For a bug out gun I'd go with an AR just because there will be more drop-in compatible parts everywhere. You can also use more then one caliber by swapping out the upper.
7.62x39 is worth it on the AK platform. Some people like 545 but I just prefer the larger round.

You will have easier and better options for optics mounting with the AR. I love the AK side mount like everybody else but the fact of the matter is that a flat-top AR receiver is simply a more refined method of securely attaching an optic. You could buy a red dot and a magnified optic and have them both zeroed and on QD mounts so you can switch them out as the situation demands.
ARs are also easier to keep from rusting for me simply due to all of the aluminum parts.
An AK would definitely be a good choice for a SHTF rifle. A good AK is stupid reliable and super durable. They say ARs will be easier to find replacement parts for, and that's true, but with an AK it's unlikely you'll ever need a replacement part.
If it's for SHTF I'd recommend 7.62. Easier to stock up on mags and ammo with, healthy enough to hunt with, heavier bullet will buck small brush better.

there is no real reason to get one. things are fuckspensive, heavier for no benefit, and less accurate than their 16" counterparts.
5.45 and 7.62 dont need the extra barrel length like 5.56 does, because 5.45 doesnt fragment even at 2900fps.
The only real reason to get one, is for the thicker receiver and trunnion, but if that is the case, just get a VEPR in 16".

I'm looking to get a Vepr in 5.45, but I'd probably want to reduce the weight by changing the furniture. I know I can get the adapters and all, but what should I replace the furniture with? I like the way Magpull's MOE stuff looks, but that *only* about a half pound reduction or if it'd even work with the adapter.

If weight is a big concern for you, then a Vepr might not be your best option, they have heavier barrels and receivers than normal AKs. You can definitely shave some weight off by using plastic furniture, but it will still be heavier than the average AK-74.

Alright, i bought an AMD 65 parts kit and a 16" nitrided AKM barrel. I know what i have to do to make those two things fit.
I'm trying to make a receiver out of sheet metal, problem is i don't have a vice, or that reciever bender thing. As a result, it looks like shit. But the dimensions are pretty close, so it might work. The bends aren't tight at all though. Does k think it'll work?

I agree that the AK-74 is highly aesthetic but I find the sloped stock angle of the AKfowtyseben compliments the milled receiver well and ties together the entire feel of the old age of the design of that model. Bonus points if it's blued (original finish), bonus points if it's a T2 with the little steel ferrule thing on the stock.

As a Yugo owner, you'd probably be better off with the WASR.
A lot less difficulty finding aftermarket stuff for it, and if it's going to be your only AK, it might as well be the "go to" one.

The folding stock is doable on Yugos, but it's going to run around $200 if you want a good setup (Krebs Custom adapter, Stormwerkz hinge, and either a Manticore Arms Or CNC Warrior triangle [or another 10/32 bolt on stock])
On a WASR it's a similar dilemma, as you either get a wire "coat hanger" type folder, bonesteel stock and hinge, or you spend a shit ton of money to entirely replace the rear trunnion and get all the other stuff that involves a folding mech.
Both rifles will outlast you and your kids, but do the footwork and figure out which is best for YOU.
