Hey there /k/, lurker here, with a serious problem that I think your collective brand of ingenuity can solve.
I live on the outskirts of the suburbs of a moderately sized Floridian city. And I have a bear problem. Normally they pass through the woods near my home without incident, sometimes taking out a trashcan, but no real damage or threat. Until one attacked my dog, broke his back legs and forced me to put the pupper down.
I need some way to defend against bears. I know, I know, just buy a big gun and shoot the fuckers. But I've tried that and I found out that A: These bears are craftier than I thought, and B: I'm a massive pussy becuse I got chased back to my house by a bear.
I need to conduct some asymmetric warfare on these big furry fuckers. And I need some ways to go about this that won't land me in federal prison.
I was thinking of maybe digging some punji pits and going full vietcong, but not sure as to how effective it would be against bears. Maybe there could be a way to build anti-bear landmines or something? Preferably not explosive so I don't have every alphabet agency from here to Tampa knocking on my door.

Get a bigger gun. .308 or 10mm ought to be plenty for blacks of the two or four legged variety.

The pupper was pretty much my only friend for the better part of 5 years. So I'm a bit of a hermit at the moment.

well lets see put some meat out stuff it with lilly of the valley, or foxglove digitalis they can be bought at most garden shops if you really want to kill the fuckers painfully jack in the pulpit causes full body muscle contractions that break bones. that said it will take a while to grow enough of the plants probably around 2-4 months and remember to propagate them. my house has at lest 200 lilly of the valley and 40 foxglove digitalis plants amongst others. if you really want to fuck them up though like majorly buy a castor tree the beans contain ricin a potent neurological poison on level with vx gas. you can get castor trees from most garden centers and all you have to do is put the berries in the meat.

2 gauge with good slugs like Brenneke. Guides I know go slug slug buck buck slug.
45-70 would be a good choice for a long arm but it will shoot slower than a pump or autoloader shotgun. The people using 45-70 rifles are concerned with larger bears like griz.
if you need something smaller then ak pistol with 20 or 10 round mags is a good choice.
Bear mace works very well and should always be taken.

A spear properly utilized is the only thing that is damn near guarunteed to stop large dangerous animals. They still have them in modern day Africa hunts.
I'd try to focus on making the property not bear friendly. Securing trashcans, taking away other food and water sources.

oh you could also do something else look up destroying angel its a mushroom that if I remember correctly is native to the east coast and can be found look up pics it kills pretty fast too. belladonna nightshade, should work still thinking what else is there that can be used... oh good old water hemlock can also be bought that should also kill the bears when laced in meat, or if you want to straight up just kill them mix in some boat bottom paint with the meat.

You can get a .45-70 lever action which is cheaper and better than a .44 magnum or .454 casul revolver

I have a cousin who's a cop in Sudbury Ontario, they occasionally get blackbears that wander into residential neighborhoods and try to get into people's garbage. He said they use a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with slugs (don't know what kind of shotgun or slugs though). He also said that a rifle would likely over penetrate, which would be a huge safety issue in a residential area.

On to your dilemma, a .45-70 is the best option for the specific task, but a Mossy or Remington 12ga pump with slugs will get the same job done. You should own a good quality 12ga pump before buying a big bore rifle, since the shotgun is incredibly more versitile. Seriously, if you don't own a good quality shotgun that should be first on your list.

Seriously though, go get some bear bait, like pheromones or food scents. Toss a couple large steaks out around the area.
Position yourself well and far back with a property sighted in .338 rifle of some kind, or a 45.70, etc. Definitely practice with your rifle until you are certain that you can make a kill shot. You don't want an enraged bear murdering you because you couldn't kill it.
After you kill the bear menace, skin the bears and get yourself some bear skin rugs. You'll keep one for yourself and the other to make a bear-crow out of to intimidate other bears/stake out as a warning.

When I was living in the real boonies of Colorado and Montana, I heard campfire stories about how there was a certain type of head nod that if you did to the bear, the bear would do back to you and you could walk away peacefully.

A 5.56 or 9mm would do in a black bear just fine with the correct ammo assuming OP knows how to hit milk jug sized areas. SP for 5.56 and 147 fmj +p for the 9.
5.56 has stopped grizzlie charges before. There is an advantage to being able to put out a dozen deep penetrating controllable shots in a few seconds.
