The civilian ones kinda suck. They only take single stack mags without modification, and the trigger and ergos are... meh. Plus 16" barrel is way too long for that thing.
But my dad has one (lol at this thread being about our dads) and I always enjoyed shooting it. Pistol caliber carbines are kind of niche/obsolete but they're always pleasant to shoot.

I don't know about the ump45 but the ump9 is pretty cool. I had the chance to use both the mp5 and the ump (french gendarmerie), and I liked the ump better.
It feels a little lighter, the recoil is almost non existant, there's a nice 2 rounds burst mode (which makes more sense than 3 rnds imho), rails, foldable stock, etc.
It was just plain better than the mp5, unless you're alergic to plastic.

Everything I've heard about these suggest they have disproportionate amounts of recoil due to being too light.

This is correct, the recoil is nuts. I couldn't see at all when I was shooting it on full auto because it shook my face so hard. The Mp5 didn't have that problem.

Is it just an mp5 in a plastic case or are there any noteworthy differences in terms of operation (apart from 2 shot burst mode)?

It's a plastic mp5 but available in more calibers . That being said they are supposably decent shooters. My agency has them but we don't get to qual with them.
My only complaint is that it feels kinda cheap compared to other automatics I have shot
