First time starting a thread so apologies for any mistakes.
Can anyone tell me the differences between BCM's standard barrels and hammer forged barrels?
Anyone have any experience?
>>
I have a question.

The army/marines have their own "marksmanship" badge. Is there any civilian equivalent? I've always wanted to get military training, but alas, do not meet the requirements.
>>
Not sure if this belongs in /meg/ or it's own thread.

Is there any specific sprint drills or something similar you guys do in conjunction with a long run and a tempo run day.

I want to add in a sprint day to my running schedule but I can't figure out the best way to go about it whether it be 400m repeats, high rep 50m sprints, 100m sprints etc. Cheers.

You can do it with 7.62 NATO, but it's probably better to use 5.56. Many people use .22. The course is about 500 rounds.

Bought my first gun today (nugget), and I've been wondering about shooting on public land and innawoods.

I've seen a few places mentioned where it's okay to shoot, but I'm concerned about getting in legal trouble.

How do I determine where it is okay to go innawoods and shoot?

I wonder what the chances of you finding an Idahobro close enough to shoot with. Start a fucking Idaho thread looking for range buddies or even organize a meet maybe.
Good luck with that rifle anon. I have a decent collection of old as hell and brand new weapons and I still love my old bolt actions.
>>
>>30486291
I would search for some rifle ranges local to you. If there are none, then I would think innawooods would be fine so long as there is no law regarding the discharge of a firearm (inside city limits etc). Just make sure it's public property, and remote enough that you're not potentially endangering anyone
>>
>>30486381
The law says I am fine as long as it is outside city limits and not on private property. My issue has been determing what isn't private property since the ranchers here don't always fence it off.

>>30486370
I'll give it a shot. I've never had much luck finding people in Eastern Idaho for anything.

It really ain't shit as long as you mean regular badges (marksman, sharpshooter, expert) all that defines it is how many targets you shoot at a range of paper or pop-up targets from 50 to 300 meters. Iirc these are the requirements:
0-23 fail
23-26 marksman
26-32? Sharpshooter
32?-40 expert

There are two main methods to putting the grooves on the inside of a barrel: button rifling and cold hammer forging. Button rifling involves sending a button broach tool down the length of the barrel using hydraulic pressure that cuts and form the rifling into the barrel. Cold hammer forging involves bashing the barrel from all sides with hammers and forcing them to contact onto a tool, a mandrel, inside the barrel which has the mirror image of the desired rifling on it. Hammer forging has been proven to be the most accurate method of barrel production, providing a longer useful barrel life and greater accuracy. However, while cold hammer forging takes about 90 seconds per barrel (plus a longer setup time), button rifling is a much quicker process at about 30 seconds per barrel.

I'm looking to buy an AK receiver for a Polish underfolder kit, but there were some additional option available on Childers Guns. There was front trunnion holes, rear trunnion holes; fixed stock, double hook trigger cut, and reinforcement plate installed. Out of these which ones are necessary, helpful to have for a first time AK builder like myself, or completely unneeded? I'm going to assume rear trunnion holes are not needed because it said fixed stock and I'm buying an underfolder kit.

Bull fucking shit

Cut rifling and button have been the historically most common ways of rifling ever

Hammer forging is new

lol who buys BCM anymore anyway? they get their shit the same as these popup online gun stores and just put them together while slapping their logo or asking for it to be added during mfg.

Army bros,

Why are there junior ranking soldiers with bronze stars without a valor device? I know that they can be awarded for meritorious service and not for valor. But why do lower ranking NCOs and junior enlisted have them without a valor device? I know they're not getting them for leadership, at that level they'd get an achievement or commendation medal. So are bronze stars awarded for combat heroism without a valor device?
>>
>>30494159
The bronze star is for performing duties exceptionally, but not under conditions where "valor" would be warranted.

It can also be given as a blanket award for doing a dangerous job as a daily duty, but not for a specific incident. For example, as EOD all of the team leaders in my unit were given Bronze Star without a V device as a deployment award. Bronze Stars with a V were given for specific, exceptional incidents in a more rare and personalized fashion.

Yuo will need work done. Pretty much niothing in the US was ever made with whitwirth threads.
You need to lengthen the shank on the Thompson barrel and thread the rear portion of it. You will also need to bore the SMLE receiver so the barrel can reach back to the magazine. You will also have to cut down and rethread the bolt body and shorten the firng pin and spring.

CHF greatly increases the durability of the barrel. But you have to ask yourself if you're going to put enough rounds through it for that to matter (tens of thousands). I do not expect to put as many rounds through a barrel and decided to go nitrided, which is still a great treatment for durability, without the expensive manufacturing cost.

What do you guys have against butterfly knives?

Not trying to 'call anyone out because butterfly knives are great' etc... But anytime someone mentions butterfly knives there's immediate >summer >you must be 8 to post etc...

I don't really give a fuck, I don't carry a butterfly knife, I carry a gun, but isn't this /k/ - Weapons? I get that most butterfly knives are things that teenagers and criminals in third world countries are interested in for the most part, not gonna lie, I had a butterfly knife when I was a kid, still have it, but I don't get all the hate. Sure they're on average no where as durable or useful as utility tools as the types of knives more often discussed here; but if you think about it, Isn't it a more WEAPON (vs utility) oriented knife? I mean compared to some big fixed blade or various utility folders, one of these would be much easier to conceal (size), quickly deploy (opening method), and stab(comparatively long and thin blade relative to similarly sized folding knives) someone with?

I mean it's not a great knife in general, but it's like it's more specialized as a weapon than the more 'acceptable' to discuss knives here.

just get one, they've been around $300 for the last 5+ years
http://www.southernohiogun.com/longguns/sks-rifles/chinese-sks-rifle-7-62x39cal.html

they'll run out eventually
>>
>>30500601
So-so guns that are usually fed shit-tier ammo.
You'd be doing very well if you saw better than 4moa.

I'm sure there are some with good bedding and crown (etc) that with good ammo will see sub 2moa. Those would be the exception, not the rule.

That's about as middle-ground as you're going to get. Like I said, the typical ammo used in them is rather shitty, and many of the guns are rather shitty. Exceptions exist, and I'm sure some /k/omrade will swear that they have one that shoots sub-moa with Tula HP ammo.

>rationalize buying an sks
Why bother?
>>
>>30501086
Well, that's my worry, that they'll run out. I want a russian one, preferably, but chinese will do. Thing is that I'm not from burgerland. Some 5 years ago, they went for equivalent of $100. I was a fool not to tell my hasguns friend(s) to buy one for me for safekeeping till I make my license. Now, they are at about 300 bucks equivalent here, too.

>>30501139
Thanks for the input, /k/ommando. That's actually better then I expected, really. If I could find one that is about 2moa, I'd be overjoyed. About the shit ammo, prices of 7,62x39 went up horribly here, so I'm actually thinking about reloading.

Oh, and by the way, what's the bayonet like? Can it hold an edge any good? I know it's a silly question, but hey, fetish's a fetish.

>rationalize buying an sks
Well... fair enough. What I meant is that "Do I really want all the hassle with making a license, buying a locker, all the other stuff, while things are not really stable for me now". On the other hand, as the other anon said, they will run out eventually. Thanks, anyway!

How hot is spent brass?
Is larger caliber brass hotter?

I just read a story where a guy ND'd and killed his son because hot brass flew into his shirt and he chimped out without proper TD.
I'm a german so my firearm experience so far has been limited to .22 and 9mm. I have had brass from both land on my arm and it was hot but not anything to chimp out about...

I didn't get it in my shirt tho, so generally curious to just how hot this shit can get.
>>
>>30502176
So, do they have any use nowadays?
>>
>>30502306
Gets really hot. Knew somebody who had a piece of 5.56mm brass flew and get stuck between their body armor and neck, ended up leaving a nasty little burn.

I bring anti-burn cream in my range bag and have had to pass it over to newbies standing to close to their friends a couple of times.

Of course, when it hits you know what it is immediately and deal with it rather than freak out like a 'tard.

all before clearing the hot brass. took maybe 10 seconds, and i was freaked out

My friend moved to Japan after two years of college and teaches English there. We're both part Japanese. He recently came back home to visit, and he exhorted me to come along with him and try it for a while when I wrap up my English MA. It sounds like a really nice place, with nice people; a very functional society. A place where you don't have to worry about getting mugged walking the street, and the girls aren't all fucked up head-cases.

But I really like guns. I will miss my funs. I hold my gun rights near and dear to my heart. I don't think the Japanese government will let me own an SKS. And I love America, too; though, more and more I find myself hating and resenting my countrymen for their conduct and political apathy.

If I stay here, I know I'll end up working for a decade or two as an adjunct professor making so little that I'll need government assistance. They offer to the tune of 27-30k USD there, with heavily subsidized housing.

Should I be adventurous and try to make enough money to be able to retire someday, even if it means giving up one of my human rights?

*To add: It's like in jump school or air assault school. When you are in those schools in AIT, you are not part of your permanent unit, yet those badges transfer. And even if you go somewhere years down the line that doesn't jump and don't stay on jump status, you still keep your badge.

EIB is like that. Once you get it, you have it.

I don't think they have the same association we do with liberal arts and English. In Japan, I'd just be a sort of advisor as to the intricacies of conversational speech, sorta. In addition to being a sort of ESL TA.

The only badges which change up and down once you earn them are shooting qualification badges.

All the other ones stay the same or progress (EIB replaced by CIB, or Airborne replaced with Senior Airborne badge, etc), they don't backslide once you get them.

The badges stick with soldiers across MOS changes too, which is why you can find non-infantry wearing CIBs for example.

Someone got fucked hard as a straw purchaser for doing something similar. If you were to do that, you would need to keep the gun for yourself for a little while and then sell it to him via a private party transfer. Keep a bill of sale."

If you live in a state where you need to do a background check at an FFL for the sale, then so much the better. Harder for people like the ATF to whine about this sort of thing if you go through transfers that way.

Ole Miss bro here. You would like it there.

Only thing, you have to be a resident to get a ccp. I think that takes a year or year and a half, not sure. If you already have your ccp and you are coming from a state with reciprocity though, you're cool.

As far as hunting you can get an out of state license until you gain residency and are able to get in state, but its pretty expensive.

Ole miss requires you to stay in the dorms your first year so bringing all your guns would be a no go, but you could probably get away with keeping a shotgun or pistol in your vehicle as long as you didn't get caught.

As far as gun culture, a lot people shoot just for fun, and there are two ranges, one indoor and one outdoor, but IIRC, the outdoor one got shutdown because people were being stupid on it. No ranges anywhere close to 500m though, unless you go on a 25-30 min drive to desoto gun club, which isn't that big of a deal if you really need to shoot that far.

I'm a recent Ole Miss grad, but I did not go for undergrad so I can't help you there.

If you're an undergrad, you probably aren't 21 and this a MS Firearms Permit (CCW) isn't really in the cards right now. MS requires residency for one year before you can obtain a MS Firearms Permit; however, if you have a valid permit from another state, that requirement is waived. In my experience, expect the full 45 days for the application to be approved (mine actually took slightly longer). I came from out of state with a valid permit from my home state. You'll need to establish MS residency but that's easy (not so for tuition purposes -- need 1yr of unbroken residence in MS and proof of same, and a lease isn't enough for proof).

There is some ambiguity about campus carry in Mississippi. Talk to Nathan at Mississippi Auto Arms on the square for more info. He's an attorney in addition to an NFA dealer. TL;DR: you may be able to legally carry on campus with an Enhanced Permit, but there are risks of school discipline.

As far as the local gun culture goes, hunting is plentiful if you're into that. Shooting is often done on people's land. There are two ranges available (or were when I was there), and I used to be a rangemaster at one of them. The indoor range is ridiculously expensive for what it is, most employees are fudds, most everything is overpriced, and the owner is a total asshole. I have little experience with the other (TGC), but IIRC it was 100 yards and outdoors. Both of them have machine gun rentals if you're into that.

There is a club in Como (about 45 minutes away) with longer ranges but it requires membership. There's something in Greenwood (about 1.5hrs IIRC) as well, but I'm not familiar with it apart from knowing some people who shoot USPSA out that way. Tupelo (about 1hr away) is supposedly getting a new range soon that's supposed to be pretty good. The Como club has/had IDPA regularly if that's something you're into.

Thinking of a Taurus 809 as a first pistol. Does anyone have any experience with it?

Ole Miss bro here

Most longer range stuff is done on private lands. If you want to really stretch your rifle, the best place is probably the range up in Memphis that hosts 3gun events.

A lot of people do go up to Lake Sardis to plink, but I'm not totally clear on the legality of that.
>>
>>30534701

MSSA in Memphis will require him to buy a membership. That's about $900 for the first year and $300/year after.
>>
>>30534815
I really wish I had the money to spare for that because they have nice facilities
>>
>>30534856

Yup. My dad was a member a few years back. Shot there quite a bit.

IIRC you can still get in for competitions and such without a membership fee, but you'd have to pay whatever they charge as an entry fee.

they probably don't, germans invented hammer forging for the mg42 in 1939. blm started producing rifles in 1936 and the expense of upgrading to hammer forging equipment would have been extreme. your best bet would be to look at the outside of the barrel to see if there are traces of hammer forging.

Are there any semi-auto or pump shotguns that will take 3.5" turkey shot loads, or am I looking at a break action for that?

there are probably pump options too, the industry has bird shooters covered.

Any tips for some one trying to make a little side cash buying and selling guns online? I have an FFL, I'm currently just doing transfers.

It's where police or private groups are trying to "get guns off the streets" by offering a set amount per gun turned in. Usually it's a bunch of nogunz type people who show up to turn in Grandpa's old shotgun or whatever that they are scared of.

There have been some quite funny instances of guys making incredibly cheap homemade guns and turning in like 20 of them for profit.
>>
>>30535466
also some instances of people handing over extremely valuable firearms for a $50 gift card.

>>30535443
meet fags in line, tell them you're a licenced gun dealer and will pay them x amount of dollaridoos rather than make them wait in line for whatever reward the brady bunch is handing out.

I got a fresh 5.56 case from my buddy's M16 lodged in my collar once. Fortunately we were firing prone, so I quickly flicked it away with my left hand, keeping my gun steady with the right. Hurt like hell, but 20 seconds after I cleared it I was capable of continuing fire.

Nigga what? It gets work-hardened, with very slight autofrettage effects. Work-hardening is the main mechanism by which barrel life is extended.
