Modeling has been on /k/ since the beginning, but over the years the type of users who model (usually late 20s onwards) stopped coming here.

It's not that you're not welcome, it's that most of our modeler pals have moved. Modeling is occasionally featured in Threadhead general.

Modeling tanks isn't specifically /tg/. A lot of people on /tg/ model mini's for war gamming. There are quite often threads where people will post model tanks and other aircraft however. If you decide to check out /tg/ look for the WIP (work in progress) thread. I believe you will be best served there. Your fit looks good on that model, but you could use more practice with paint. Don't feel bad I hate painting and I suck at it.
>>

Try thinning your paints and applying more layers. The dark green dots look drippy. If you want to up your painting try highlight the edges with a brighter color then applied. If you like painting get a Vallejo tank paint set:
http://www.hobbylinc.com/vallejo-german-camouflage-1943-44-afv-paint-set-6-colors-hobby-and-model-paint-set-78414

>>30483822
You can get figures separately for dirt cheap. If you build a 1/72 model check out:
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/review.aspx?id=757 or just google 1/72 german tank crew.

They did.
You can find images of German tanks and tank destroyers with insignia and vehicle names, etc.
They didn't usually name their vehicle and paint it on them like the Americans did though. The most common things you could find on German tanks and tank destroyers was unit insignia or markings as well as vehicle numbers. When you see the triple digit numbers on German tanks, it denoted what Regiment/Battalion, company and platoon that vehicle was from. There are some exceptions to that 3 digit rule, however where it would be one or two digits preceded by a letter, which I assume is the same thing. (company followed by platoon or squad)

So I'm sitting on a model PBY and an Iowa-class that I've been meaning to get back into, starting with the Iowa. Anyone have any basics for starter supplies that I should look for? Any good materials or sources I should be looking for as a beginner?

The typical wehrmacht division, those guys , well think of them as union types. They just have to do the army job. They do it quite well, very professional. But they aren't painting stupid shit on their equipment, that's unprofessional. Now the units with heavy political orientation, the actual Nazi types, especially later war guys that were to young to serve earlier in the war and totally immersed in the propaganda... they would do that stuff

>>30482187
Good start for sure. Next time try using some more muted colors, and instead of free handing the splotches. Paint the entire model in it's mustard yellow base coat. Then after it dries use some modeling putty like painters tape to cover up certain sections of of the tank, and paint the rest green, rinse and repeat with brown.
The technique is very well presented by a sadly inactive you tube user called model brush seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLMMxRVRcyE

In addition, if you want some great painting shows and tutorials, give 'wargames, soldiers, and stratedgy

Or dr. fausts painting clinic

Reminds me that there's a hobby shop nearby which sells Japanese modeling kits of WW1-Modern era tanks for cheap, like 5 bucks to 20 bucks for a nice scale model suitable for 40k and the like if you wanted. I'm tempted to buy a whole bunch of german and russian tanks now.

I've found them in Alberta for $5 to $30, depending on size and quality. However most models that would provide more than a cheap 1 hour respite in their construction and painting would run you around the $30 mark

Speaking of the subject, i want to get model tanks of the German military during ww2. I would prefer they are 1:35. Does anyone know a good website or kit brand which would allow me to get all of them and have them uniform? Also, i understand that panzer means tank in germain, but they have the tanks called panzerkampfwagen i, ii, iii,... is the full name for a tiger a panzerkampfwagen tiger. http://www.hobbyeasy.com/ is where he does a ton of shopping and so far as I know hasn't had any problems.

1/35 seems to be really popular in Australia. Decent sized models and 'Dragon' Brand kits have really come into their own over the last few years with their detail and their ability to be assembled out of the box without anything else. There is an absolute SHIT TON of extra shit you can get for them (such as photo etch kits, metal barrels, Friul metal tracks http://www.friulmodel.hu/ ) but the Dragons are considered fairly 'shake and bake' out of the box.

Concerning your question about 'German Armor' it really does depend on how extensive you want to make your collection. The problem with Panzers is that while each series (I, II, III etc) has a massive variety of models with different things hanging off them such as side skirts and different guns and modified armor.

http://www.hobbyeasy.com/en/data/svcrjovstoaxmjrhk75i.html
and
http://www.hobbyeasy.com/en/data/32544.html

They're both PanzerKampfWagen IV's but one is a J model late production, the other is an F1(F) with short barrel gun.

Will you get every single variation of every single Panzer in Dragon? No, but you should get at least one really good example of each type of Panzer. My suggestion would be to look at each one (P I, P II, PIII, P IV, etc) and figure out which one you like the look of most. I personally am a great fan of PzKpfw IV H with side skirts, but you might decide you like the earlier short barrel versions.

Hope I helped.

I really want to get into making models like these, but haven't because I'm pretty sure my girlfriend would call me a nerd and kick me out of the apartment. But in all seriousness, the main reason I want to start is because I accidentally bulk purchased loctite super glue, so instead of buying 5 bottles, I bought 50. I know it's not ideal modelling glue, but ffs I need something to do with it all.
>>
>>30489679
Idk how you did it, but the way you made the metal pitting on the barrel shroud is phenomenal.
>>
One thing I'm kinda surprised I never see here is battle damage. Back when I was into models I'd spend quite a bit of time getting them looking all nice, and when I was finished I'd start adding some wear and tear. Hell, I had a Pz.IV that I made to look completely knocked out. I used a soldering iron to poke holes in parts of the armor to make it look like penetrations from WWII photos, and even burned/painted small dents into the armor to simulate bullet impacts. I de-tracked it, broke off a few pieces, and burned/painted the area around the engine compartment.

I also made a crashed MiG-3, with the airframe exposed in some areas along the fuselage and wings, snapped off the end of the left wing, broke the landing gear, and burned the propellors to make them look like they'd gone nose-first into the dirt.
