So got everything installed on my K43. EXCEPT for the bolt. Now mine is an AC45 so it does not have the gold open latch and has a special way to put the bolt back in compared to those with the latch. However the rear of the bolt housing is catching on the rear of the receiver. Anyone with a no hold open latch know what the issue is?

I thought they didn't start on the round receiver until 38?

My nugget knowledge is slipping.

The round receivers started in I think 1934. Izhevsk stopped making Hex in 1935 I believe, and Tula made both round and Hex in 1936 before going to round only.

Got a question on cosmoline and stocks.

I'll be de-gunking a K98 when I get back home from college. How does the stock fair after cleaning it off from cosmoline? SHould I refinish it after? If so, are there any good finishes specifically for this?

This is the first Mosin and the first gun I bought for myself. Looks very clean and feels perfect. Should I take it to a gunsmith and pay $60 to have it inspected for safety before shooting?

This is the only picture I have, I pick her up on Friday.

M91, nice. which factory?

Does the bolt match?
Is there an [SA] stamp on it?
Check the tang date

it is probably fine.
>>
>>30484963
Nah, it'll be fine.
>>
>>30484929
Does he have a name/website? I need a WW1 (or earlier) dated M91.
>>
>>30484997
1934 Izhevsk (hex). They said it was all matching but I think the magazine was mismatched, maybe the buttplate too. Everything else matches. Took a flashlight to the bore and it looked clean as a whistle. A little cosmoline remains and there are some TINY specks of rust in the chamber right before the bore.

It's a 91/30 Finn capture, or at least in a Finn stock. Look for an SA, D, or 41.

Interesting, it doesn't have a front sight hood, though looking again I notice the stamped handguard rings. Check the bolt numbers and the receiver numbers. If they match you're good. Check if there is a stamp on the barrel shank for refurbish, it will be a square with a line through it. If it was refurbished likely nothing is actually original on it. Also interesting is the hanger on the butt, thats a Fin sling hanger. check for an [SA] stamp. In any case it is probably just fine to fire.
>>30485125
what this guy said, its probably a Finn capture.

they started in '34 or '35. I know Tula made both during '36

It would be pretty neat if it's a Finn capture, almost certainly would have been captured in the winter war with that date.

>>
>>30485179
So if it has an SA, D, or 41 anywhere on the weapon it could be a Finn capture?

The markings will be on the barrel shank, sometimes below the woodline.

They will be on the barrel shank. It will mean that it was at one point Finn property. How they acquired it is another story you will likely never know

Maybe you guys can help me. I have what I think is a nagant. Uses the ammo, has the 5 shot internal magazine. But what is weird is, the bolt isn't straight, it's bent like a hunting rifle. Also, the front sights aren't the circle ones. It's like a traditional rifle. Also, instead of the bands that hold the wood around the barrel, it looks to be just riveted on. Can anyone give me an idea of what type of mosin it is? I can't get a picture, as i put it in layaway at a pawn for 100 dollars.

Oh also, it has that red star insignia on the butt of it. Dunno if that would mean anything.

Because I had some extra money and wanted one now. I was at the last gun shop in my area and didn't want to wait for another one to show up (whenever that may be) and didn't want to wait for a transfer. I'm also going back to college soon and wanted to shoot a Mosin with friends and family before that time came.

If it's been bubbafied, it's going to have a lot lower value than if it's as-issued. Anything that is different than the military issued it lowers value. If it's a type 38 and it was shot post-war, there's a good chance it was rechambered to 6.5mm-.257 Roberts. The dies are readily available and brass can be formed from .257 Roberts or 7mm Mauser brass. If it's a type 99 and it was shot post-war, there's a chance it was rechambered to .30-06. I have one of those in bubbafied form. Shoots a good pattern with a hot handload, not so good (2" at 100 yards) with factory .30-06. Ask him if it's been shot much and have him show you some ammo and reloading dies if there's any around.

That's probably one of rifle's previous owners' house mark. Every Finnish farm or homestead used to have one and the one your M39 has is one of the most common symbols.

Hey guys.
Would anyone be interested in doing WWII relic hunting in Ukraine? I've done paleontology prospecting digs with a pretty respectable guy these past couple of years and he was talking about getting a group together to go Eastern Europe to dig up WWII artifacts. Only way we can go is if there are enough people participating so he doesn't lose money.

Obviously, this type of shit isn't cheap, but he's brought back some "interesting" things in the past so it's definitely worth it. I'll probably post in a couple threads on here to gauge interest and, if enough people want to go, get more details and start a new thread.

The trip would probably take place next summer.
