Who thought the open sides on the mag was a good idea?
>>
>>30466399
The air force because they were supposed to be aircraft-mounted.

...depending on the caliber.

A requirement to load the heavily tapered and rimmed 8mm lebel round.. You had to help the follower with your fingers.
Supposedly they managed to make closed mags just before the end of the war.
>>
>>30466934
The original french ones were "less shit," not "good."

Find a flaw.

Lightest firearm of its type at the time, low production costs, etc.

We're beating a dead horse about beating another, older dead horse.

As a 1915 full auto rifle mass-produced in a hurry, yes, it was quite good. And it was constantly improved during and after the war, culminating with the belgian FM 15/27.
Germany converted those they could get their hands on to 8mm mauser, btw.

>>30466399
It's a common issue to a lot of MGs from that period in the trenches. The Lewis also has an open mag, and belt fed MGs using tissue belts were even worse.

>>30466936
>they managed to make closed mags just before the end of the war.
Nyet. I believe this come from a mistranslation of "obturateur de chargeur", a piece that locked the mag in place in the later versions.
Modele 3 mags from 1918 improved the reliability issues, though.

As with many french weapons of that period, local production meant that you could have spare parts from another factory not fitting the gun. Also varying manifacturing quality (those produced by Sidarme being way superior that those produced by Gladiator, for example)

Also, a prototype from 1910-1914 that inspired the Chauchat. It was a lot more refined.
Sorry for the watermarks, I didn't find other pics of it.

Maybe he should do a mudtest :^)

So we can see if it is really good.

Were the French made ones in 8mm Lebel good?
