The hyperinflation part makes sense. Plague? Not so much. Natural or biowar vectors would put a damper on international and regional travel, which kills foreign support for a US schism or Balkanization.
Anyhow, we're headed for a Constitutional crisis. Have been for a while. OWS, Tea Party, Bundy Ranch, and Malheur are all symptoms of the same thing. Our system is no longer responsive to the needs of the people and needs to be changed. An ever-increasing segment of our population is aware of that fact.
As far as the triggering factor, I haven't got a clue. I suspect that we're headed for a Cold War with China, one of our proxy fights might kick things off. For instance, if we start sending 'advisors' to Vietnam again. Aluminum caskets start landing at Oakland again, some public outcry, and the government cracks down. There's your flashpoint.
It's not going to be militias against the military. It's going to be disaffected citizens against LE and NG units. DHS will be the New Model American Gestapo. The real military will be busy keeping China from overrunning SE Asia and the WestPac.
It's going to be like the 60s and 70s all over again, only a lot worse because this time around the government can't control the flow of information. Look up all of the civil unrest, and bombings, and shootings and firefights, that happened in the US back then. Those people had no way to communicate and coordinate. Now imagine how it would have been with cell phones and the internet. That's what we're heading into.

Well I think it would start to break because politicians would obviously neglect every duty first in the name of PC. Yeah I absolutely love that speech, it's what drew me completely into the book/series. From then on the gives small details like how NK amassed divisions to go south, China fly swatting Taiwan air force and how within a week or two there was 9 major regional conflicts around the globe. It then pretty much focuses on a group/family in Texas after giving the big back story with interludes to DC and other regions of the US for interlacing story points.
Think there are about 10-12 books out now with the main story finishing around book 9ish if I remember and rest being kinda continuing after tales.

That's the first book, all mine are kindle versions as I read it all on deployment. Looks like they have paperback versions available.
Another two series I am enjoying as by Thomas A. Watson called "Dark Titan" (mass solar flare event, some sci-fy defiantly thrown in but don't want to give away major plot points, no aliens though) and "Forgotten Forbidden America" (China Markets crash hard, global economy takes a shit, China wants money back, US Government "seizes" all retirements, savings, checking accounts to "safeguard" them against devaluation).
Mr. Watson also has 3 other series I follow, 2 "zombie" like (Blue Plague Series, think rage zombies), Forsaken World (teens dealing with zoms as parents are away on a trip, very prepper family though) and one Vampire one "Vengeance in Blood" that I expected to be cheesy as fuck but surprisingly is completely different from other books i've read.
