Apparently, MACV-SOG used to use them back in Vietnam, to maximize individual firepower.
None of the books I've read say anything about the recoil, but one in particular claims that guys who had a lot of practice with these sawed-off M-79s were able to do shit like fire them into thick tree canopies like improvised air burst rounds, or even ricochet them off rocks or tree trunks. "Like playing a good pool game" is how the author described it.
I think it says a lot that DEVGRU still uses these things to this day.

Personally I think it's one of the better ways to get a concealable explosive other than grenades onto the map for PD2. Of course it loses to the other launchers on account of capacity limitations, but the higher accuracy makes up for it IMO.
