just came from the range and went through 50 rounds with our new home defense shotgun (20 gauge 870 express). do I have to clean it?
>>
>>30459020

Nope, but it's generally a good idea to clean it somewhat often
>>
>>30459020
Have you ever heard of YouTube? Kind of a new site. You should check it out
>>
Clean your fucking guns, you lazy prick. If you can't be half assed to literally just spray some Hoppe's 9 down the barrel and run a boresnake through it, you are not responsible enough for firearms.
>>
>>30459020
It's new so yes, clean it
>>
>>30459020
>20ga

unless youre literally OP pic why wouldnt you have gone for a 12ga

I've been on YouTube and there are differing opinions you shit stain. Offer your advice or fuck off.
>>
>>30459073
Here's my opinion. Clean it, fag.
>>
>>30459020

It's a pump shotgun. There is so little that can go wrong that frankly it's not worth worrying about. Just spray some oil in the internals and wipe it down with hoppes. You'll be fine.

I'm not asking cause I'm to lazy to fucking clean it asshole. I'm asking because it's for home defense. I've shot it and I know it works. If I take it apart and clean it, my faith (being a new gun owner) goes down drastically that it will shoot after I put it back together. I can't just test it out my back door because I live in a densely populated area.
>>
>>30459106
Seconding this; my grandfather didn't clean his old hunting shotgun for like 40 fucking years and it still functioned just fine. I cleaned it after he died and was shocked how much shit was built up in there.

OP, I'd still clean it personally, but it's not going to suddenly break if you don't.

>>30459125
You can still cycle it and dry-fire it for the sake of a basic function check. Make sure it'll cycle a shell from the magazine to the chamber, eject the shell, verify it's clear, and dry-fire to make sure the bolt works. Simple as that.

Thanks man, would you mind offering some more details? Pic is what I have to clean it. Unfortunately no spray...
>>
>>30459154

40 years is fucking nothing. I have a Winchester m1897 and Stevens 520 that were built in 1903 and 1912, respectively, and I cleaned decades worth of dry black carbon out of the receiver after shooting it for a year. The gun literally does not care. There's a reason it served from WW1 to Vietnam without a hiccup.
>>
>>30459125
>running a boresnake and oil through the barrel requires "taking the gun apart"
Holy shit you're fucking retarded. You literally pull the pump back to open the receiver, then run the fucking boresnake through it, asshole.
>>
>>30459268
> New gun owner
>>
>>30459222
>put some hoppes on patch, put patch in loop, run down barrel til it comes out mostly clean
>brass brush a couple times and repeat 1 until patches are totally clean
>run a couple dry patches down it
>run fuzzy thing down it with a little oil
>wonder why fuzzy thing still gets dirty as fuck and ditch the whole kit for a boresnake that you can easily toss in the washing machine
>>
>>30459300
When you were a new car owner, did you also not know which pedal was the brake and which was the accelerator? That is the level of retardation you have achieved.

You see the big tube that looks like your dildo on the underside of the shotgun? Pull that back. See the little metal piece move back? Look inside. See the open hole? That's where the boom-boom balls go. Spray some Hoppe's down that, thread the boresnake through it, and pull it out. Repeat that a few times.

Fucking Christ, watch a Youtube video if you're this fucking helpless.
>>
>>30459020
>870 express
its going to rust regardless of what you do
>>
>>30459309
>washing machine
that's a weird way to spell "spray it down with a hose.... enjoy your metal poisoning anon.
>>
>>30459340

>your brain on autism

Try not to be such a condescending prick.
>>
>>30459375
Try not to be a stupid asshole and post a useless thread on /k/ that could easily have been answered by a five second google search. I'm surprised a faggot like you isn't a gun grabber since clearly you're completely incapable of doing anything for yourself.

If you figured out how to shoot your gun, I'm fairly certain you could have figured out how to google "how to clean a shotgun" and then followed the directions it told you.
>>
>>30459309
should I take the gun apart or can I do this with the gun assembled?
>>
>>30459222

Don't over think it. The pump shotgun requires no maintance to function properly. Just oil the blued surfaces and drip some hoppes into the mechanical action. It's simply for warding off rust if you live with high humidity. You literally can't fuck it up.

The packaging explicitly says you can band them up and wash them in a washing machine (obviously not a dishwasher if that's what you were going for). I'd also be more worried about Hoppe's poisoning than metal poisoning if anything
>>
>>30459020
Run a boresnake through the barrel with some Hoppes and then re-lube it if you want. To be honest, 50 rounds ain't shit for a pump action shotgun. You can remove and clean the bolt after a couple hundred rounds.
>>
>>30459020
no
>>
>>30459020
>>30459073
Heres some advice: Return the 870. Buy an older 870 where Remington's quality wasn't shit yet or a Mossberg 500/590. Make it a 12 gauge this time too
>>
>>30459125
Get some snap caps famalam, test it with those . ALWAYS POINT IN A SAFE DIRECTION tho
>>
I have an 870 Wingmaster from the 70's that has been cleaned probably 3 times in 40 years.

It's nice to keep the action lubed up so its smooth, but you don't need to clean it ever. So long as it's not rusting
