My friend is a budding blacksmith in his late 60's. This is his first attempt at this style of knife. He had an issue with the mold for the brass so he decided to just go full fuck it and gave it to me as a gift after he got an A at the local community college. I think he used leaf springs and some other steels in the blade but I'm not sure. Thoughts?

Why did you start a second knife general?

Do you need to own the knife threads?
>>
>>30460323
This is the same knife general going on for about a month now, we're on the 15th thread
>>
>>30460323
the other one was a bunch of goons posting bayonets and not /ktg/
>>
>>30460451
>>30460480
/k/ only needs one general thread per topic, that's the point of generals

If you want to post about knives you should post in the knife thread instead of starting your own
>>
>>30460501
That's what we're saying, this is the general knife thread
>>
>>30460501
I agree
>>
>>30460323
Pretty much this >>30460451

It would be nice to just keep the /ktg/ numbered. We've got to #14 without an issue and the other thread wasn't too far along to request a switch to this one. So this thread, #15, is simply an effort to keep a month old tradition alive.
>>
>>30459531
Once you make a couple of billets of pattern welded steel yourself you begin to appreciate the work that goes into it, good looking dagger
>>
>>30460657
Let's keep it going then.
I started the knife general and I'm surprised to see it coming along as an actual tradition. I had to nurse the threads from 1-8, constantly bumping and making new threads on my own with only a few regulars (Sharps and espada guy mostly). But now people are beating me to making new ones, bumping the current ones and killing the imposter threads. It's cool to have traditions, let's keep it alive.

Don't worry all those horror stories are from reckless people trying to do aerials and create new tricks and shit.

I'm a flipper and it's really not that bad. You can always buy a trainer or tape your blade until you get confident enough. The cuts don't last long and they don't hurt, so long as you have a sharp knife and not a jagged one. The tricks are fun, flashy, a great way to build hand-eye coordination, and are kinda addicting. Just be warned, quality balisongs are much more expensive than your average knife, although if you get lucky a Kimura can be had for $80 or a BM51 for $160. Patience is a good virtue in the balisong market. Just watch it like a hawk.
>>
>>30461515
Forgot to add that the worst cut I've ever had was no worse than a paper cut. Just know when to bail out if you fuck up a trick and definitely drop it if you feel or see the wrong side of the blade touch your hand/finger. Usually you don't feel the cut until after you start bleeding.

Also if you're looking to get into balisongs and want to find a decent one check instagram # balisongsale or #knifesale, Jerzeedevil is also a good place. WTS/WTT posts pop up on r/balisong on Reddit every so often.

>I don't understand the point of sheepsfoot.
>knife has no point
That IS the point of a sheepsfoot blade: it doesn't have a point.

They're used for sailing where you don't want to accidentally stab yourself or your boat/ship/life raft while you're cutting something.

They're also used by some fire/EMS people to cut things like seatbelts to remove people from autowrecks. The sheepsfoot's lack of a point prevent the rescuer from accidentally stabbing the victim.
>>
>>30459531
it looks very nice, and fairly functional as a weapon. No clue what exact metals he used but leaf springs make acceptable blades.
>>
>>30462276

It has a point, fag.

It works better in every way than a regular belly knife for precise cutting.

I say go for it. You're getting what you pay for with knives and $50 is a price at which you could expect a decent model. I've heard good things, although people say they're heavier than usual. That's better for newer flippers because momentum is easier to catch

This just arrived in the mail, cost around 4 dollars. it's a lot heavier than expected and is apparently 8Cr13MoV steel. How do I keep it sharp? Also the slipjoint isn't very smooth will it just wear itself in over time?
>>
>>30464284
you fucking sharpen it idiot
and yeah it should smooth out but u can drop some oil in or whatever
>>
>>30464347
I've never had steel like this though.
>>
>>30464477
If you've ever owned anything in 440c then yes you have. What gave you the impression that sharpening it would require anything more than any other knife?
>>
>>30464518
I haven't. It's very soft and the angle is extremely narrow and the blade is totally curved.
>>
>>30463838
It's there a flipper version?
>>
>>30464612
>I haven't.

That is genuinely surprising.

The rest of what you said doesn't sound like much of a challenge though. Soft steel is easy to sharpen and the blade's not curved enough to be a hassle. I can't really tell if the angle is unreasonable or not without looking at the knife, it looks like a small narrow blade so a fine narrow edge is what I'd expect.
>>
>>30464284
8cr isn't bad to deal with. Sharpens easy like the other guy said, holds an edge ok and takes a keen one. Curves aren't hat tricky to sharpen, it's recurves that take some extra tools and a little skill.
>>

You should say what kind of things you use your EDC for. A Kershaw Leek would be a safe recommendation if you don't do heavy duty cutting or prying and your jurisdiction is okay with assisted knives (most are in the US)

Its tiny but it was the closest one I can find.
>>
>>30471334
Then what brand do you recommend for a good quality OTF auto?
>>
>>30471458
microtech actually
>>
>>30471473
So you agree that microtech has it's niche where it makes the only good quality functional option on the market?
>>
>>30470396
Because three are both the same shape, I assume they aren't broken,
But why would you choose a pointless knife?

It is literally pointless.
>>
>>30471493
I also never said OTFs were ideal for anything

Like I said, if you want an actual knife you can use and abuse don't go for microtech

If you want something to just have around for fun get one
>>
>>30471542
OTFs are incredibly practical. No safety risk from having both sides sharpened, no risk of cutting yourself when opening and closing the knife, no risk of cutting yourself if the lock failes.

They're good when you may be doing something else with your other hand, like holding a bull's balls before you castrate it: http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-nevada-switchblades-20150418-story.html

The only reason they're not popular is laws and FUD. Also the market is artificially limited because of these laws and the bad rap switchblades get, resulting in limited selection and high prices.

If there were no laws against switchblades they would be extremely popular and ideal for utility purposes. Look at assisted opening knives like the kershaw leek, they're popular because people want switchblades and they just barely skirt around switchblade laws.
>>
>>30471621
Yeah the laws are pretty retarded, other than closing about as easy as is possible there is no deployment speed advantage between OTF and say an assisted flipper.
>>
>>30469866
Absolutely.

Only other real advantage I can think of is being able to carry double edged blades, too. But I honestly gave up on using them after my ultratech gave me so much shit. I'm also put off from their warranty and disassembly policy, and their non-OTFs are just tacky overpriced jewelry.

So like I said, not something I'd recommend for actual use and abuse

I honestly can say that my xl Espada has a zero play lockup. It feels more solid than my buck 119. You can choke up on it, hold it in the middle, or go way back. My fav is the latter, but all are ergonomically designed to perfection imo. I love the feel and rigidity of that knife. I strongly recommend you try to get your hands on one. As ridiculously big as it is, I prefer it to any other knife I've handled. If you do change your mind and go XL with aluminum, you will be very, very happy. Also it's heavy, but sleek; so it rides comfortably deep pockets of jeans and cargo pants. Just wear a belt and enjoy.

Opinions on Svord 11" Bowie? I want a nice bowie but don't want to spend $700+ on a custom
>>
>>30477399
L6 is hard to top for a working knife, never seen a Svord in person from their expensive lines though.
>>
>>30477262
What are you looking to do with it?

The Contego would probably be better if you're looking for a large folder for utility or even innawoods work. The 51 works well as a utility knife but probably not as well as an average folder, but remember you can always flip it as a balisong which is a huge bonus. If it were me, I'd buy the 51.

Just make sure to shop around on the knife forums and especially balisong forums, it's a bit overpriced at $230 retail. You can find like-new ones with original box and such for as low as $160, if you get lucky.

.44 magnum hollow points for bear defense. If that's not an option tie a knife to a stick and use it as a spear. Good luck with that, though
>>
>>30477614
Luckily I have a 44. I was just thinking about if maybe I had to stab it a few times, would it suffice
>>
>>30477511
If you want something for bears because no guns allowed, this may be slightly better: https://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-Gladius-Machete-Black/dp/B004MMS0PE/ref=pd_sim_200_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=31QjyPpMeEL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&psc=1&refRID=CNZKC3E8J461YC9TEPVJ

R/balisong is a good place to discuss the niche hobby of flipping and a good place to go to find balisongs for sale, trade, or post a WTB ad.

>>
>>30477399
Svord make some pretty good stuff for the (comparatively low) price, they're all handmade and generally well put together.

I'm kind of a bit 'curious' of some of the tool steels they use on some of their knives as its a bit unconventional in some of their blades, but provided they're tempered alright (and I have no reason to doubt that) they will be immensely tough fuckers. Designs, not really pushing the threshold anywhere or being particularly innovative, but thats because they're cheap and practical- in regards to the bowie there. The straight handle is pretty true to the original design of that particular knife, however its a big fucking knife with a lot of momentum that I could see sailing out someone's hand while chopping because its got no rear pommel to hold it from slipping out.

Also, just as a side note, they use Wenge in the handle which is a fairly tough tropical hardwood, I've used it on handles in the past and it needs to be treated with care and respect or it will blowout and get splinters.
>Those splinters will cause sepsis if they're not treated immediately
>The sawdust will also fuck you up!
So, I'd probably wrap it with something to give a bit more grip, it is a pretty timber though so that's kind of a shame
>>
what would you reccomend as a good sharpener for a small folding knife (leatherman c33) that I use for work? I know I could "get a better knife" but I like having the screwdriver and bottle opener on it and I've oiled it up so it deploys super fast, but the blade is dull as fuck.

Please don't do this: >>30479566 Certainly never use the carbide, it's shit and will eat away way too much metal. Don't use on any knives costing more than like 5 bucks.

For a cheap guided system look into Lanksy crocksticks. There's also the Lanksy system and the Spyderco sharpmaker. Sharpening free hand is also nice if you want to take the time.

Couldn't agree any more. I had that piece of shit. I'm so glad I threw it right in the fucking trash. Also, when you git gud at Lansky kits, you can put nearly a mirror edge if you finish with Mother's Mg and Al polish. Just put masking tape over the stone, spread the polish, and move it in a stropping motion. For around 50 bucks, you can have a better edge than when you bought it and you can touch it up in about a minute. The only cons are setup time and time to regrind your factory bevel. Once you've hit the apex with the roughest stone, you can fly right through the rest, removing any small scratches. Without spending hundreds of dollars, I think Lansky kits put the best edge on a knife.

Hi /ktg/

I had a really important question. Basically I need a really large fixed knife or a dagger. Not as fuckheug as in the pic related but similar.

Needs:
>Thick blade (Doesn't need to hold an edge so well as long as it never breaks on me)
>A square or round guard (a pommel would also be nice but not really needed

Any idea where to get a good durable knife with these features?

For a cheaper alternatives the schrade schf45 is something to consider as well as the SOG Jungle Canopy. The former's got nice reviews online, its chopping ability is well praised. If I were to choose between the two I'd get the schf45 because of the handle, chopping ability, clip point and its general aesthetic. I don't really care about the aggressive jimping because it's easily fixed with a file or some tape. It's made from softer steel so it would most likely roll rather than chip if stressed, if the HT is done right, because it's made in China and with a chinese steel. Depends on what you want to do with it. I'd like to get one to beat the shit out of it.

High carbon content in steel (.7%<) makes it prone to rust. Personally I don't see why you'd want to use carbon cutlery for eating. Get yourself a stainless Opinel.
