She wants me to get a gun, and my friend said that ak-47s were comprable. Is this true? Is there any assault weapon that isnt black and scary as an alternative to an ar-15?

Just pick a caliber, 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington are what the AR-15 typically shoots, and find a semi-auto that's chambered in that.

An assault rifle is any rifle that shoots an intermediate sized cartridge and can fire in both semi-automatic and fully automatic mode. If the weapon can not fire in a fully automatic fashion, it is a semi-automatic rifle and not an assault rifle. An "assault weapon" isn't a thing, it was made up to make guns sound scarier.
5.56 NATO is just .223 Remington adapted for NATO use. They're a bit higher pressure, but I really can't tell the difference when firing them. The standard AR-15 can fire both.
