It depends if it's a fixed or detachable magazine.

close range : bout portant (holding bit)

REALLY close range, like the barrel is touching the target : bout touchant (touching bit)

That space between the cylinder and the barrel: entrefer (between-iron)

Also in Brazil:

Bullet = Bala = Hard Candy

We have a nickname for muzzle loaded gun that is "soca-soca", like thump-thump

Also VERY often hollow points are called "dum-dum"
>>

>queima-roupa
That's actually a lot more descriptive than point blank.

why call muzzleloaders thump thumps unless flint or matchlocks? Are percussion guns not particularly popular there?

Français:

clip is a "chargeur" (loader) or "magasin" (yeah same word for both)
hammer is a "chien" (dog) or "marteau" (hammer)
point blank is "bout touchant" (touching end)
>>
Swiss/German:
Clip = Ladestreifen (loading stripe)
Hammer = Hammer
Magazine = Magazin
Point-Blank = aus nächster nähe (nearest distance)
Trigger = Abzug
Bolt = Bolzen

We don't have the problem of people saying clip as it means something absolutely different.

I do like classifications though.

Bolt-Action Rifle = REPETIERGEWEHR
Assault Eifle = STURMGEWEHR
Shotgun = SCHROTFLINTE

The tongue-in-cheek names are great.

It's like calling a firearm a slotter or a bayonet a perforator.

Some people call bullets (as in the projectile) pills.

I've heard many people call snubby revolvers (3" and under) "gut guns".

There are so many interesting adopted names and concepts, many historical ones too. Chicago typewriter, street sweeper, heater, "riding shotgun" to name a few.

>Point-Blank = aus nächster nähe (nearest distance)
also called Fleckschussentfernung. Fleckschuss = point-blank-shot. literally "spot shot" because your aim is on the spot.

>Bolt = Bolzen
more generally "Verschluss". a cylindrical bolt is called Zylinderverschluss.

>Bolt-Action Rifle = REPETIERGEWEHR
Repetiergewehr = repeating rifle of any type. a lever-action is also a Repetiergewehr. the correct term would be "Büchse mit Zylinderverschluss", but "Repetierbüchse" has become almost synonymous with a bolt action rifle.
>>
>>30464773
Swiss actually aren't German, they don't even really speak the language. Those parts of Switzerland that speak "German", actually speak some germanic pidgin bullshit, not understandable for actual Germans. Their culture is also totally different.

What you might think of are Austrians, they are basically Germans. Austria was always German, untill the 19th century it was just another German kingdom like all the others, like Bavaria and Prussia. Part of the German nation, same language, same culture as other south germans.

Swiss don't have the historical ties to Germany that the Austrians have, they actually have their own nation and nationalism, unlike Austrians.
>>

I know Point-Blank only as Fleckschuss. Aus nächster Nähe is more like a description of Point-Blank, and less a translation.

We have "ferrolho" for that.

More BR:
Fore-end (shotgun) = telha = tile (like the ones on the roof)
Firing pin = agulha = needle
Trigger-guard = guarda mato = bush fender, as in dont get twigs setting of the gun when moving inna jungle

Thanks for correcting me. I forgot it's actually Verschluss. But i've never heard of Fleckschuss. Also:
Pump-Action = VORDERDSCHAFTREPETIERER

I honestly don't know why we even have Büchse and Flinte. It always confuses me when filling out something. Like Karabiner is not a Carbine. Is Bolt-Action a BOLZENREPETIERGEWEHR or a damn Karabiner. Fucking weapon acquisition license.

>>
>>30465784
Thanks. Is the term'round' slang or does it actually refer to something with the cartridge
>>
>>30465924
It's just a slang term for cartridges.

Cartridge is made out of the bullet (projectile), case, powder and primer.
>>
>>30465924
'Round' is extremely common slang, much more common than saying 'cartridge'. A magazine holds 30 rounds, a machine gun fires 750 rounds per minute.

Although "rounds per minute" (rpm) might have started because it's the same acronym as "revolutions per minute" (rpm).

Flip here. Some interesting /k/-related colloquialisms heard in the Philippines:

>"Armalite" = genericized trademark. Refers to an M16/AR-15-type rifle, or an assault rifle in general.

>"Baby Armalite" = M16-type carbine, e.g. M4, CAR15.

>"Infant" = subcarbine (8"-10"), usually M16-type

>"Finger Cutter" = MP5k
