Didn't see a Bug Out Vehicle thread in catalog, so I decided to start one and ask for advice.
> Currently have a Dodge Dart 2013 with 41k miles.
> Bought for commute and work, worked 60 miles away from home and couldn't move.
> Owe less than $13k on it so half way paid off.
> No longer commute to and from work
> Trunk is small and sucks loading up car for trip to the range.

So I ask you guys, should I trade it in and what should I get?
Purpose would be for:
> Off-roading
> Range trips
> Daily commute some decent MPG would be nice.

Trying to keep it at about $10k to $15k, might lose on trade in for my car. KBB has my car at $9k-$11k for trade in.

Toyota Hilux or Land Rover Defender. I can attest to both being useful and good innawoods in a military situation. The Defender especially has a lot of space and can transport a lot of people or gear. Had one as my personal vehicle during excercises inna FDF.
>>
>>30452408
I'm not sure you can get all of those things you want without some tradeoffs. For example, a good 4x4 drive is going to lower your MPG, especially if you opt for some off-road tires. Secondly, you're buying used, and since you can't get older Land Cruisers or Nissan Patrols, you have to settle for the next best thing. I'd go for a Hilux or a 4Runner with decent mileage and healthy engine. There's a plethora of aftermarket parts you can install, and they're reliable. I'd stay away from Defenders.

My odometer went out when my grandpa owned it like 15 years ago. We think this one had about 350k miles on it. The flatbed is handy too. I just need to finish up building my sides so I can put them on a throw a tarp over it need be.

The truck has a lot of meaning to me. My grandpa taught all of us grandkids to drive in it when we were little.

This is perfect timing, I need all the help I can in choosing a new vehicle. I've started getting innawoods more and I need something with a 4x4 drivetrain. I was thinking about a 2000 Jeep Cherokee 4x4 with 4 doors. Does anyone have one or have a better alternative to this? I'll be trading in or selling to Carmax my F-150. and I know I'll come out on top so I'll have a little money left for repairs or upgrades. Does anyone know of any known issue that occur at the 100K to 120K mile mark?

>>30453269
Yeah an older 4Runner or Pathfinder or even Isuzu Rodeo is also in the running, but it seems that the Yoda and Datsun hold their value a bit too well and the Rodeo has pretty much gone extinct. I'd like to salvage any gas mileage I can, currently have a 08 F-150 with a 5.4 liter. So tired of the gas mileage but more than anything the turning radius. I'll settle on gas mileage but I need something maneuverable.

>Yoda and Datsun hold their value a bit too well
I fucking know it. Wanted a newish 4runner, found out that a brand spanking new one is only a couple grand more than a 4 year old one with 50k+ miles. But if you can find a pretty good deal on an old one, go for it. Finance it, do whatever you need to do. It will outlive anything else on the road. Pic related is my 15 4runner, but behind it you can see the bed of my 03 Tundra. That Tundra I've had since high school (being driven like your average high school kid), has nearly 200k on it, and only just recently the power steering pump has been getting weak, which is the only technical problem I've had that wasn't self-inflicted. Shit, the fucking AC still blows ice cold.
>>
>>30453343
I used to think 100K and that was it, but I think a lot of newer cars have better engine component alloys and way better machining so they last a lot longer. When it comes to repairs I can do just about anything besides pulling the block out. Anything else is fair game with me. Mostly because I'm a cheap bastard. So here is what I'm thinking:

Jeep Cherokee
Jeep Wrangler (you knew the Jeeps were gonna be there)
Deuce and a half (these can be had for cheap)
Toyota 4Runner
Toyota Tacoma
Nissan Frontier
Nissan Pathfinder
Chevy Blazer
New Chevy Colorado / GMC wahtever it is (mainly because of the diesel engine option)
Ford Bronco
Isuzu Rodeo
Land Rover Defender (this one is questionable because aren't parts and repairs expensive?)
Hummer H3 variations

Anything else? Or should I nix something from the list?
>>
>>30453343
>that pic.

those have TERRIBLE angles of approach
and screams for an after market steel bumper

>only a few grand less for a few year old model compared to brand new

plus you get better interest rates on new vehicle loans than on used vehicle loans
>>
>>30453406
Drop the defender and H3. The defender will be out of your price range, and if you find one that is, it will be a shell with nothing working and you were right about the parts. Any hummer past the H1 is worthless. Stupidly expensive (more-so now that they aren't in production), stupidly heavy, stupidly big, and all that while looking like a bigger tool than a H1 driver.
>>
>>30453498
Mine is the Trail Premium which funnily enough has better approach angles than the sr5 and limited by a few degrees. But I agree with you on the bumper. Future plans include a 2.5-3" lift, ko2s, some more lights, and both front and rear steel bumpers.
>>
“T-34s are exactly the right tanks for us,” I replied. “They are crude, simple, and reliable. They always start and they always run. If they do break, any machine shop can fix ’em. We don’t want tanks to fight other tanks. That’s what anti-tank weapons are for. The best way to stop an M-1 is with a mine that blows a tread off. We want tanks for real armored warfare, which means to get deep in the enemy’s rear and overrun his soft stuff, his artillery and logistics trains and headquarters, so his whole force panics and comes apart.”
>>
>>30453528
Huh i just thought about that "here our rugged new 4x4 body on frame sUv" * first bump cracks the bumper half* "TRD offroad bumpers are discounted on purchase with vehicle"
>>
>>30453406
Because if SHTF, the first thing everyone should do is waste gasoline as fast and as efficiently as possible.

Guys, make sure your vehicle has an old inefficient V8, 4x4, and some big heavy tires.

>>
>>30453587
Ok so no Blazer/ no Bronco, I wasn't sure about them on gas mileage alone. The Deuce stays. If you got a Deuce I would hope you know to have the logistics to support it.

Current list:
Jeep Cherokee
Jeep Wrangler (you knew the Jeeps were gonna be there)
Deuce and a half (these can be had for cheap)
Toyota 4Runner
Toyota Tacoma
Nissan Frontier
Nissan Pathfinder
New Chevy Colorado / GMC wahtever it is (mainly because of the diesel engine option)
Isuzu Rodeo

tahoes
suburbans

ignore the fuel effeciency nazi, if he wants to drive his fucking prius around post SHTF, more power to him

anything with actual 4WD is going to be shitty on fuel, and the more you try to mitigate that the more complex you make field expiedient repairs. (ie MDS, thanks Chrysler)

as far as big tires though he has a point, tires should be reasonable but with good tread, like an all terrain with good road qualities

yeah, but they go anywhere and the parts are shared with all the other chevy trucks and as such are ubiquitous, thats the trade off.

newer ones have bad approach/descent angles but that can be somewhat alieviated by aftermarket.

again, everything 4WD will have shitty fuel economy
>>

>>
>>30453793
>import.

you dont just import a vehicle like its clothing or something, there are trade restrictions and all kinds of other shit would likely keep the vehicle from being imported at all, let alone properly papered and legally drivable
>>
>>30453922
ok
>>
>>30453910
>what is...

its salt.

they put it on the road to melt snow and ice.

it mixes with water and gets all up in the guts of your metal vehicle and makes the metal oxidize fast as fuck.

ie, rusts your shit out from under you.

and yes, there are ways to mitigate this, like undercoating and the manufacturers using better quality or differently treated steel, but sometimes dont because cheap and stupid

I'm with SF in Afghanistan rn and I drive an uparmored Toyota Land Cruiser daily. Shit's fucking cash. 10,000 pounds, 600lb doors, entire inside is layered in blast cage, bullet proof windows, chrome furniture, aww yeee.

One of our Land Cruisers took about 6 rounds form an AK, 2 of which hit the windows but didn't penetrate, 1 went through and through the hood, I'm guessing it bounced off the armored engine block, one hit by the gas cap but didn't penetrate.

Think hard about the kind of scenarios you're prepping for. How likely are they? Anyone who has been through a hurricane knows just how precious fuel is after a disaster. Carrying extra, or having a cache may be paramount. Having the whiz bang bells and whistles may work great for a range IFV. But in a long , pronounced period without new gas availability, you might shelve that technical in favor for an old VW Microbes or something else with a weed Wacker engine in it that trades performance for efficiency.

Inb4 people discuss armoring vehicles

you can't afford to armor your shitty civilian vehicle properly and if you could you wouldn't engineer it right and then if you could you'd just have a much heavier much much much worse handling pig that would still get ventilated by .50BMG and lower caliber center fire AP ammo

use your vehicles to move quickly and that is all they are for, and your life gets so much easier

also don't give ANY of the shyster trainers in the US money for their vehicle gunfighting training

you do not want to fight from inside your vehicle

it is a bullet magnet

everthing will be omgwtf loud

bullet casings everywhere, hot burning casings mmmmmmmmmmmm

the sensation and pleasures of being flashbanged every time you pull the trigger mmmmmmmmmmm

bullet casing bounces off sagging headliner of your moms Aerostar and back into chamber of weapon creating hilarious jam YAYYYY

muzzle of rifle snags on every fucking thing while you try to find out where the enemy are who are just putting holes in your large convenient target PRAISE KEK

don't fight from inside your vehicle, don't plan around it happening, if fighting happens either dismount and settle shit or get the fuck out of town di di mau

If you have a newer car you can mileage without a shit engine. Not a great engine, since they're still relatively low horsepower and are usually tuned to reduce emissions rather than straight efficiency. But it's a fair step up from weed whackers. My friend has a Ford Fusion and the series-parallel hybrid allows the gas engine to deliver power at the same time as the electric. Makes for really nice acceleration. It normally drives like a regular series hybrid for fuel efficiency.

But yeah if you REALLY want to save gas, a Geo Metro is the POS car of choice. There are driving techniques for reducing consumption, and plenty of aero mods. 50+ mpg, easy. Terrible acceleration, emissions, and safety rating though.

Prettymuch any Jap single cylinder dual sport is a solid choice. I have a Suzuki DRZ400 but a DR650 would be my personal choice for a bug-out bike.

KLR 650, DR650, XR650 R or L, XT225/250, WR250R (or F if you can plate it), just as a start. You can go much further down the rabbit hole but the above bikes will be a great starter and bug-out bike, mainly for parts availability, abundance, and aftermarket support.

Though most any bike can be outfitted to better suit a purpose than the other, a dual sport can do just about everything pretty well and are super cheap to insure. Plus you don't have to worry about precious fairings getting obliterated when you drop them.

Why is anyone recommending gas at all? Any modern diesel can run off filtered veg oil, used motor oil, and kerosene wit a few modifications.

Pic related was the big daddy of it all, even ran on vodka. That White multi fuel engine was a problem child with a mean streak.

gassers will be faster, and particularly cold hardy without shelter, but long term diesel is viable and you can home brew the fuel. It may even be highly efficient if you knock all the plastic and bullshit gucci out of it to drop the weight.

So jealous man.

I bought this 1983 K5 Blazer when I was 18 for $1000 and an old CZ75 clone. It has a 4 speed standard shift, 35", 4.5" lift, 26 gallon tank. I painted it myself. I spun a main bearing a while back running it low on oil like a dipshit.

It has been sitting now for over 2 years. I'll get her back on the road someday.

What year is your Bronco? It came with a 5 speed and the 5.0?
>>
>all these 3 ton vehicles in a SHTF scenario

A normal car is enough, heavy cars burn fuel.
>>
>>30466394
It's a 94, came stock with the 5 speed and 5.0.

Engine has 209k miles on it. I've never once had an issue with the engine - though over the winter one of my leaf spring shackles snapped. Had to rebuild the front end as well.

Only engine issue I've had was my AC pulley seized. I just put in an idler pulley because who needs AC when you have 5 liters of american freedom and those little windows you can open up to vent air.

I always wanted a K5. Love that 80s style. Drop a 350 in that som'bich. Once the engine goes on my truck(Hopefully after 300k miles) I'm dropping a 351 in it.

Truck before the paintjob. All I had done at that point was install an LSD in the rear and get some 35"s
>>
>>30452731
In my area there's a little used car lot by my house and one day I saw an older 80's looking white G-class.

Stopped by one day to check it out and turned out to be some Isuzu piece of shit or something with a mercedes grill and emblems thrown on. Was so fucking mad
>>
>>30466443

94' Ford 5.0, that is a good motor. I didn't know those came with 5 speeds. EFI right?

Hopefully in the next few years I can put a 350 in her. She needs new lift springs up front, a new interior, and a soft top, not to mention the motor, electrical, and some heating. Probably looking at around $8000. Won't happen for a long time.

>>30466469
$2500 is a damn good deal for that. Standard shift trucks are hard to come by.
>>
>>30466522
My landlord was pissed when he saw this.

19 years old and dumb.
>>
>>30466528
She'll be back up and running some day.
>>
>>30466538
I really do love this truck. I'd much rather put thousands of dollars into it than buy something newer. Cars are weird like that.
>>
>>30466522
Yeah it's EFI.

Funny story how I got this thing too. My friend had an 89 foxbody mustang for sale. Had a badass turbo, thing was fast as hell. Got it up to ~180mph on the highway and it caught on fire. Never started after that, so he put it up on Craigslist. Traded a busted mustang for it, and I bought the bronco for $2500.

I kept telling him to let me look at the wiring and I'd get that mustang running, but he kept insisting it wasn't that. He just wired the starter solenoid the wrong way.

After 8 grand it'll definitely be worth it. I'm not much of a Chevy guy but I'd gladly drive a K5 around. I love S10's too.
>>
>>30466554
Those are some beefy fucking tires. What size is that rim?
>>
>>30453343
My mom sold her 6 year old 4runner for $50 under sticker. 4runners hold value really well especially if you don't drive them much
>>
>>30466581
Fox Mustangs are another 80's favorite of mine. It was a turbo 5.0? Those are fast. I had a buddy with a pretty worked NA 1987. I think around 300 hp.

This is my buddys 90's grand cherokee. 4wd, 4" lift, 4.0 six cylinder, with a 5 speed standard shift.

You know off-roading folks always shit on the 1988-98 GM trucks because they have a 'fragile' IFS but honestly as long as you don't go seeking the biggest fucking rock in your state to try and drive over and avoid turning into a bohunk jumping approaches those things last for fucking ever with really minor maintenance. I live up in rust land and even today it's not uncommon to see at least a dozen of that body style buzzing around.

My own personal 'truck' is a 93' K2500 Suburban, one of the government ordered rigs it has a K3500 suspension and chassis and 1 1/4 ton springs. Manual everything and didn't even come with a full interior. I love the big girl, hate the gas mileage.
>>
>>30466600
The wheels are small 15"s on a 35" tire. Looks a little goofy. Got them from a real nice guy in Houston Texas for $150 for all 4, with good tread.

This was taken in the mountain near Boulder Colorado. Stupid drunk hillbilly fucks flipped their Cherokee. Sweet build too, King shocks, 5 speed manual, and a 4.0 straight 6.
>>
>>30466647
That thing was very worked. You could spin the tires out in 5th. He claimed that he hit a quarter mile in 6.2 seconds with it.

In the process of searching for a new truck I looked at a grand cherokee. Had to hit the soleniod to start it, and the brakes caught fire while driving. I also had to keep the steering wheel upside down to drive straight.
>>
>>30466686
>look at pic
>well its not THAT bad, im sure he can
>Look at front rim

With an impact to do that, Its dead jim.

I've got a 4 door wrangler in petrol. I know the new ones supposed to have a lot of problems but mine's been running fine since I got it 2 years ago. Wondering how it compares to other similar vehicles. Since I have the misfortune to live in Australia, the attitude of everyone here is that Land Cruisers are the only good vehicles and literally anything else is shit. What do more civilized countries think?
>>
>>30466684
There is a guy on here with a white one and a swapped front axle. Good trucks for sure. I'm a GM boy at heart.

Truck before it was painted.
>>
>>30466686
Hot damn that's why I'm glad we don't have mountains out here in central IL.

Looks goofy, but cool. I'd like to do that, thinking of a different rim for my truck. And $150 for those is adamn good deal. I've got Mickey Thompson Baja's on mine. Shit was $300/tire

>>30466721
You did a good job with the paint. Looks relatively clean under it too. Mine's starting to rust like crazy after last winter.
>>
>>30466787
I'm really not a fan of big wheels on offroad vehicles. Can't air down. What trucks is yours? MT Bajas are real good tires man, that's why they cost!

Thanks dude it means a lot. It took a lot of sweat.
She had some rust, that is why I went after the paintjob.

The love between a man and his truck really hath no bounds.
>>
>>30466947
This was about 20% of the total rust. There was a good amount in the footwells, hole big enough to put your foot through. I remember driving over some roadkill in north Texas after a rain storm, it smelled just like the meat section at HEB.

I took the truck shooting a handful of times before I spun the main bearing.

Check your oil guys. Damn I was dumb.
>>
>>30466972
Truck when I first got it. You can spy my other 80's GM behind her.

I do wish the truck was running now. So many more shooting spots would be open to me if it was.

Renegade ugly. Renegade weak. Get Wrangler.
But for real, if you want a jeep, there's no replacement for the original. However, I think it would be handy in that it get's decent gas mileage for a 4x4. If I bought a renegade, it would have to be in desert tan, with a grill guard and jerry can mounts on the back to make it look less... Italian.

it's ~10 grand from some shitty grass motorpool on fort hood for a totally barebones HMMWV. just left that horrid place for the last time in my life, fingers crossed, and when i left there were hundreds of them in a field sititng in the sun getting rained on and recieving no maintainence over the course of 2 years. these were the ones for sale. these things require constant maintainance. driving one on a weekly basis can mean a dozen hours and hundreds of dollars. even then the ones that arent rebuilt to handle a half ton of armor are absolutely horrendous drivers on flat road, bumpy road, you name it, it will drive through it and you will be sucking for it

buy a fuckin 4 wheeler or a nice john deer

Try planb I've heard great things about them and they sell surplus humvees for an ok price that are restored and have low mileage. You can ask for different packages and they will add them for you. Best of all they are street legal aswell, some other places sell it with an off road only permit.
>>
>>30455044
See if they have the data plate info on the HMMV model and look up the tech manuel for it. A lot of those humvees you can put doors or replace the roofing if you can find it pretty easy. Their not the hardest thing to work on.
Off road they're plenty fast and it's seriously a lot of fun to drive like that. On a real street they're really fucking slow and the first few times it might seem bigger than what it is in terms of how much road it takes up but it's really not worse than a car.
