Why does this piece of shit still exist?
Is there really nothing better?

-phalanx ciws
>>
>>30447281

Well, Sea RAM does exist and it is better, but having a second backup plan is never a bad idea.
>>
One day the Joker will use it to attack the Batmobile.
>>
>>30447281
it's mostly a redundancy, also a fuck you to helos, and Biafran Babies.

It's max engagement range is 4'000 metres, with projectiles that travel at about 1'500 m/s. But it's effective range is more like <2'400, only achieving probable kill at 200 metres against a AShM.

So at 200 metres, you have supersonic debris hurdling towards the ship.

Against slower targets, like planes, it works. But there's the RIM now, so again, it's mostly a redundancy.
>>
>>30447427
It's also fun to brrrt sand pirates with.
>>
>>30447281
Because it was a lot easier to bolt on than installing Sea Wolf missiles

If your ship has a patch of deck free, why not? It is an additional layer of defense that would not be there otherwise.

Keep in mind the current Phalanx 1B is in a different league than older Phalanx models from the 90's.

Every couple of days a thread like this gets spawned... a few days ago about the 5"/54 caliber Mark 45 gun .... Same kinda start too when will see real threads on /k/?

im almost surprised these havent trickled down to local law enforcement
>>
>>30447607

I can only imagine how much overkill law enforcement will do with it.

"3 drunk guys with Klobbs are holding up a store. Blast them with the Phalanx!"
>>
>>30447603

30mm > 20mm anyday
>>
>>30447664
I'd like to imagine that that the law enforcement version shoot rubber bullets
>>
>>30447717
goalkeeper has a lower engagement range and requires you to cut a hole in the deck.

Better make those REALLY fragile paint bullets. Even rubber would probably kill getting hit with like 60 round of 20mm. At least with paint it'll only crack your entire rib cage.

>>

Well I know what drunk Chavs would do with one. They'd paint graffiti and burberry patterning on it, slap blue lights all over it, get drunk and high, and blast thrown beer bottles with the thing.
>>
the phalanx name is fucking stupid. sure pike phalanxes were inherently defensive, but for multiple centuries in all different parts of the world, they were the standard infantry formation for battle, often on both sides. something so defense-oriented should be named for something else defense-oriented. like "Pavise" or something
>>
>>30447593
But of course, it's simply less ideal than say, total splashdown at 1'100.
>>30447456
Those poor Burhmese.
>>
>>30448060
Phalanx's engagement range is vastly blown out of proportion.

It may technically be able to site a target at 4'000 metres, but unless it's a stick village full of brown people, it's not going to do shit.

Nope. It is on deployment on the USS Ponce, which is an Austin class LPD.
>>
>>30447664
I can imagine it now.. The department only has budget for a phalanx with 120 rounds of APHEI ammunition. They get a big bank robbery downtown, so they drive it to the standoff with the Phalanx in tow.. The operator(Clueless as how to actually operate the thing) spools it up and puts a one second long burst into the building. The rounds tear off the front and back of the building, shred the occupants, perforate the bank vault, light the money inside on fire, and vaporize the neighbor's dog, while simultaneously flipping the Police-marked Ford F150 over from the recoil.
>>
>>30447281

Only one dog? What a shit weapon.
>>
>>30450224
Well the bank doesn't allow dogs, so it can only kill the one that's being walked across the street.

because the MURRICA army was never about having the best toys, they were always about having the good enough toys that cost the least amount so the high brass can spend the entire budget on "consulting" companies own by them. Case and point: F22 and F35, because they will just use their old F18s if some major wars does break out and come up with some bullshit to convince people that "it's been tried and win already"
>>
>>30450237
>so it can only kill the one that's being walked across the street.
Then you weren't trying hard enough, son. You think the ATF is going to call you up to the big leagues if you can't smoke at least three dogs in two separate counties with 120 rounds of big swinging dick. Fucking weak sister, son. Weak. Fucking. Sister.

With the guns spaced apart like that, isn't there a chance that both would miss because one would be shooting too far to the right and the other firing too far to the left?
