Hello /K/ommerads

I have several AK's, but my Cugir in 7.62 is being a little cunt.
Sometimes it fails to fire, the primer is barley dented. I dissembled everything, removed the firing pin, cleaned it, lubed up everything but every 15th shot still does not fire.
Its not the ammunition, since my other raifus chew it up.

So how do i fix this?
Is the firing pin too short or what?

Post a picture of rear of closed bolt with the cover off and main spring out. The part where the hammer hits - before and after dropping the hammer. Take the pictures from the side. I suspect your troubles lie there

Can you take another one with dropped hammer square from the side, and also one with a live round in the chamber (or a dummy if you have one) without dropping hammer obviously. you can put the safety on for the second one. I'm looking for any signs of short firing pin or hammer not connecting with the rear of the bolt square on which would result in weak impulse on the firing pin.

I'm sure you are a competent gun owner, but just in case you don't know what you are doing, please, pretty please don't ND. I'd hate to be even tangentially responsible for someone having a negligent discharge. Always point the rifle in safe direction, finger off the trigger and so on. >>30444101

No worries, take your time. I'm at work so not in a hurry. Should have been more specific first time around anyway.

here you go, tried to get as square as i could. seems to have some distance between the hammer the lower you go.
next pic coming up.

now when i push the firing pin, that's about how much it stands out, is that enough?
>>
You may need to change out the hammer spring. I would borrow one from one of your other rifles and see if that helps?

The first pic is exactly what I was looking for. The fact that hammer isn't hitting the rear of the bolt square, it has a limited distance to drive the firing pin thus imparting less than 100% of the impulse it would have otherwise if it hit square on. This isn't too bad in most instances - I've built two 80% AKs and the first one had an angle similar to yours. It would still fire, although I filed the hammer down a bit to fix the geometry a little. In your case it may be different.
Another issue, to examine which I wanted to see the back of the bolt with live round, is that the firing pin may be slightly shorter for the bolt. AK firing pin is not spring loaded so it is free to slide back and forth in the bolt. When a live round is chambered, it can only go so far forward before it is stopped by the unfired primer. If the firing pin is too short, or alternatively, the bolt is too long, the firing pin will not protrude back enough for the hammer to hit it with required force. This, coupled with incorrect hammer angle could be the reason you are experience the issue you're having.
If an AK fails to fire every 15 rounds it is a major issue and if your gun is under warranty I would definitely have them fix it. If it's out of warranty, and you feel adventurous, you can always try to fix it yourself with some common sense and basic hand tools (file or small grinder). If you decide to go that route, try to eye ball approximately the angle that the bolt face is off from the rear of the bolt. Then remove the hammer, and file down said angle off the face of it (more material has to come off from the top obviously). This will probably void your warranty, but a hammer is also not that expensive to replace should you mess up.

Does that make sense?

It looks like the correct distance to me.

Why? the hammer drops heavy as it should..

>>30444536
I returned it to the guy that sold it, it seems he just filed down the bolt. it didn't solve jack shit and he said he doesn't have any further warranty to offer.
I attached a picture , did i understand you correctly?
>>
>>30444585
Your image is correct.
Filing the bolt down would actually make it worse in this case (as far as hammer/bolt connection goes), as the hammer travels too far. Shortening the bolt would make sense if the firing pin was too short, but that would also affect the geometry of the hammer/bolt connection. Furthermore, I don't recommend messing with the bolt as it's a much harder item to replace, especially given that it may require you to headspace your gun after the fact, which is not an easy task on AKs. If the guy you bought the gun from actually filed the bolt down, that could be the reason for the problem, or it could have made the issue worse.

>>30444536
I will try to file down the hammer, otherwise i will have to replace the hammer and the bolt. Nothing to loose, can't really use it in the current state. Much appreciated!
I need to get some sleep now.
>>
>>30444654
Good luck. If you end up replacing the bolt (which I don't think is necessary), check headspacing before firing. AKs headspace depends on the bolt, if the bolt changes, you can be under or over. Too loose and you'll run risk of case separation. Too tight and bolt may not close all the way in battery, resulting in exciting things such as firing out of battery with everything that goes with it.

One more thing I forgot to mention. Once you change the geometry of the hammer face, do a thorough manual dry run to check the action. You'll be looking for good solid catch on the main hook when the trigger isn't pressed and on the disconnect hook when it is. If the hammer fails to catch either one of those, rifle will slam fire and is not safe to use.
