Hey /k,

I've been on the hunt for the "perfect" optic for my POF P308 (pic related) and I've narrowed it down to three choices:

Trijicon VCOG

Elcan SpecterDR 1-4

US Optics SR-4C

All of them have good, if not excellent battery life, they are all very rugged and built to last, the USO and the Trijicon are built in the USA (Elcan is made in Canada, close enough), and all can function like a red dot at 1x, but have variable zoom to take advantage of the reach of the .308.

Maximum shooting distance near me is 500 yards, and I'm just a snot nosed civilian, I won't be deploying/patrolling with this rifle.

Price isn't really a factor, they are all about the same amount ($2200-2500).

There is no magic optic, but I think that either of these 3 fit the bill. What say you? Are there some scopes out there that I'm completely neglecting? Vortex Razor HD II comes to mind, but battery life is shit, same goes for Leupold MK6 1-6, and Trijicon AccuPower.

I appreciate the help /k.

The VCOG is pretty good. The SpectreDR is good, but the 1x has been criticized harshly by some of the owners on here.
Are you looking for variable optics specifically? I've heard good things about the Spectre OS4 with side mounted red dot. It would be cheaper too.

Nightforce 2.5-10x or a Leupold Mk6 3-18x
>>
>>30438832
OP here.

Yeah, I'm really looking for a variable optic. If I was going to go with a fixed magnification, I would probably go with an ACOG. I've read lots of posts on FN forums about guys running the 3.5x ACOGs on their SCAR 17's and having good luck with those.

But with the advances in optics technology in the past few years, it makes sense to get a variable power scope. I have a set of Griffin Armament Offset irons to run as backups, or the Magpul MBUS Pro's that are sitting on my rifle now.
>>
>>30438861
Good recommendations, but too much magnification for my purposes.

Isn't Nightforce made in the Philippines? I know they make good scopes, but I'd prefer to pay for a USA made scope.

Not that I know of? Check out the Leupold Mk6 1-6x
>>
>>30439021
The Leupold Mk6 1-6 is awesome...except for the 24 hour battery life. For a $2,000+ modern variable power optic? No thanks, I'll pass. If it wasn't for that, it would be in the running along with the VCOG, Elcan, and USO. Sure, the batteries are cheap enough to buy in bulk and change them regularly, but still, 24 hours of batt life is total shit.

Are you against 1-6x Trijicon Accupoints (not Accupower)
>>
>>30439215
The AccuPoints are nice, and they would save me close to $1,000 versus the others on my list.

Do you own one? Any time behind it?
>>
>>30438772
everyone says the SpectreDR is overrated, won't hold zero

it's mounted on springs

I've heard similar reports, especially from the 1st Gen scopes. Apparently though, the 2nd and 3rd gen scopes have fixed the issue of the variable zero.

They are issued to SOCOM, and there's quite a few pictures/reports of those guys running them on SCAR-H's and loving them. If they are good enough for those guys, then it should be good enough for me. Also, lots of posters on FN forums put them on their SCAR 17's and have good luck with them as well (I know that's the 2nd time I've mentioned FN forums, but many more people own SCAR 17s than POF P308s).

The external adjustments on the Elcan do concern me though, but again, if SOF guys are trucking these in the field, then it should be fine. That being said, if something goes wrong with it, they can just get another one from Supply/Armory. But if they were consistently breaking, then you'd think there would be reports of it, and SOCOM would probably have acquired a different optic to fill the role.

Nice rifle!

What made you go with the VCOG over your other choices (assuming there was a list of contenders), besides the awesome price?
>>
>>30439375
Fug, this isn't brg. Help
>>
>>30439411
Thanks. I wanted a rugged 1-6 and saw this for half of msrp, so I went for it.
The glass is super clear, and the 1 power actually looks like 1 power.
The only thing I don't like it the thickness of the cross hair on 6x

That sucks, man. I bought mine well ahead of the 1-6x Accupoint. For OP, I'd do the 1-6x for a .308.

US Optics SR-8C. It has a 2nd focal plane red dot and FFP reticle. Best of both worlds.

I'm getting a valdada 1-10 lts-2
for my scar-17

it covers from CQB to marksmen territory
I'm comfy touching badguys from 1000m with a 10x scope.

i definitely think a low to mid power varibale is the way to go, like 1-6x.
ive tried various optics on my 308 ar and never been happy. but ive never tried a quality 1-6x on it.
mines currently wearing a comp m4 just because it was sitting around

I have a 1-4 elcan, 1-6 vortex razor, tr24, kahles k16i, minox 1-8, and various other optics, and I'll say that there's no such thing as a perfect optic. There's tradeoffs for every one of the, even controlling for price. The elcan is good, but you have to remember it has short eye relief, so if you don't shoot nose to charging handle, you won't be able to fit BIOS properly. The thing with most of the other higher end variables is that capability comes with weight. Not a problem in the sense of carrying it, but it slows your swing speed, so it makes it less ideal for close shooting, even if it's capable optically. I would think a lot about how you want to use the rifle and approach it from there. Personally, if you're limiting it to 500 yards, I would think hard on the kahles k16i.

One other thing - don't get too hung up on battery life. With a well designed reticle, you don't really need illumination except in low light or shooting very close. 25 yards and out I haven't found it to matter.
