Posted in the last thread but it died right after:

So I'm 19 years old and about to be kicked out of my family's home because I occasionally smoked marijuana with friends after working full time every single day of the week. I always joked about joining the military but now it seems I may have to, I can't afford an apartment. My father was a marine, but someone suggested Navy since I was planning on majoring in Computer Science in college, but I only have a year of community college under my belt. I'm not incredibly in shape, but I'm in no way out of shape. I just want to do something; fly, shoot, fix, I don't care, but I don't know what my options even are.
>>
>>30438764
Ill re-reply
>Computer Science
Well you might want to get a computer related job while you are in then.
The navy has probably the best Network/Computer/spoopy jobs of all the branches.
Look into IT and all of the CT rates.
>>
>>30438764
If you score high on the ASVAB they will try to put you in no matter what.

Just go to your recruiters office and sit down with them. Discuss your interests and goals then take the ASVAB and see what your options are.

They will probably even buy you lunch. Just do it faggot.
>>
>>30438826
>Just go to your recruiters office and sit down with them.
This is a terrible idea. If you do this a recruiter will tell you everything they want to hear. In other words they will sell you some shitty rate to meet a quoata or shove you into Nuke. You need to know what you are doing before you show up.
>>
>>30438764

>>30438868
Thanks for the info. I definetly plan on getting at least a little familiar with exactly what I want before I wander right into a recruiter's office. How easily can I take the ASVAB, just to see what my options are?
>>
>>30438904
>How easily can I take the ASVAB, just to see what my options are?
The real thing not that easily, but the practice version very. I took mine within 5 minutes the first time i walked through the door. you can go to the office and just say im interested in so and so jobs can i take the practice to see where i stand and there you go.
>>
Anyone have any experience with Coast Guard? I think being in some kind of search and rescue dive would be pretty cool. If not maybe something mechanical would be a possibility if I did good on the ASVAB.
>>
>>30438931
I took the PICAT and it was arranged in a couple of days. Then again I live in a rural town with maybe 2 shippers a month if they're lucky.

I thought nuke was supposed to be a really good option in the Navy?
>>
>>30438956
Gotcha, ya it was a bit slower for me. But considering he isnt sure which branch he wants to join it might be trickier to get one of em to take him then saying screw them for another branch.
>>30438996
>I thought nuke was supposed to be a really good option in the Navy?
It is the ultimate double edged sword. The job itself and the working conditions are horrendous. The upside is the money and advancement rate. Lots of special pays, huge re-enlistement bonuses plus lightning fast advancement cause most of them get out to work in the civilian sector. But again the job is horrible and so are the conditions. Most would say it isnt worth it. A far better alternative imo is CTN.
>>
Next Wednesday I'm choosing an MOS

19K
19D

I'm torn between them what's the up side and down sides
>>
>>30439075
Functionally they are the same. At least in terms of what we are doing now. Every one of them will both be going on patrols except 19K's probably spend more time fixing tanks at least when not deployed (Because we don't really need tanks right now we aren't shipping them over).

So think about it this way, if it actually came to being a real war, like WWIII status would you rather be doing providing dismounted and mounted recon in Bradleys, Trucks and Strykers or would you rather be blowing up shit in one of the best tanks on the battlefield today?

Of course, I'm a DEPper so I have no idea what it's actually like.
>>
>>30439044
I'm seriously considering joining the Navy after college, still looking through the jobs. Why is nuke so terrible? I was always told in rotc and recruitment stations that it was the best.
>>
>>30439201
IDK but I think because of a 6 year enlistment and a training that lasts from 8 months to two years not counting Basic.
>>
>>30439201
my cousin actually just gave himself the axe from the navy's nuke program a week before earning his MOS. he was telling me about how his CO was a prick (cry me a fucking river) and how you have to be in tight, cramped conditions for months at a time and it sounded kind of shitty. i'd still take that over another 11B deployment any day of the week, especially considering the six figures waiting for you on the other side.
>>
Awkward question here

When I was like 17 I developed an anal fissure from horrible eating habits and taking foot wide shits. Never got surgery or proscribed anything for it, It just went away. It Rarely returns now 4 years later. It was a very small fissure, but I noticed that it's acting up again, no blood but little pain. Will this be an issue at MEPS?
>>
>> 30439236
The axe add in suicide?
>>
>>30439254
no, but ironically that's apparently one of the few ways to get yourself kicked out without overly negative consequences. when i was in you could just submit a written affadavit to your CO that you were gay and nine times out of ten you were out unless your unit was slated for deployment.
>>
>>30439201
For all the reasons i said. The conditons are extremely draining and trying. From what i understand its a serious crabs in a bucket situation. Most who are good get out leaving only the super gung ho and the super shitty left behind. You are stuck living in a reactor room on either a carrier or a sub which both suck ass. Im no expert on them cause i was on cruisers but everything ive heard from an unbiased source has been negative. Again id go CTN if you want a challenging and awesome rate.
>>
>> 30439294

What is CTN? I never really looked into it because I was always told nuke was best.
>>
@30439337
are you manually writing down the post numbers?
>>
>>30439337
>>> 30439294
Wtf are you doing, are you doing that on purpose?
And CTN is the hardest/best intel rate in the whole military from what i understand. Its something along the lines of hacking foreign data networks. Basically work only at huge intel commands, think DIA and NSA. Sweet schools and stuff while you are in and when you get out basically guaranteed to get hired as a civilian at those same buildings.

Going to Fort Sill in 2 weeks for basic training.
How fucked am I, weather wise, keeping in mind I come from the California Bay Area and have lived there with godtier weather my entire life? Hello all,
I'm flirting with the idea of becoming an Air Force TACP.

If it will show up in the records. If it's something minor like frostbite, if you went to see a shrink for depression or if you drank too much booze or did drugs in college it won't show up in your record.

If you were committed to rehab or treatment for alcoholism or depression then it'll show up when they run a search. If not then don't say a peep about any of those problems even if you consider them to be something that happened long ago and not an issue anymore.

What kind of questions do they ask?
>>
>>30445226
I commissioned as a 68W and leave for basic in a couple of weeks. Super hyped. As 68W's, we have quite a bit of flexibility. We can travel up the pipeline to become a Ranger or Green Beret Medic. We can be attached to all sorts of units such as regular infantry, recon elements, sniper sections, mechanized infantry, etc.

If you want to enlist as a Navy Corpsman, the most important thing you have to know is that you are not granted the same type of flexibility. They can place you in a hospital somewhere in Korea, or a battleship somewhere off the coast of Japan, they can make sure you never see combat, which is what I'm assuming you'd like to participate in. In the Army, I've heard that you rotate on and off from greenside and the base with other medics. And you don't have to deal with those nasty jarheads.
>>
So my current goal is to spend time time getting in shape, then get an 18x contract and enlist to become SF. I've been at it for a few months, and it's going great, I expect to be ready around the beginning of 2017.
But I'm so fucking tired of working retail, and I just want to enlist. Is it possible to get a contract that guarantees me a shot at the Special Forces Qualification Course in, say, a years time? If I can get that, I will HAPPILY enlist tomorrow and serve as a combat engineer or just plain infantry or something, but I REALLY want to at least try going SF, and if I can't get that guarantee I think it's best to just wait until I'm ready.
>>
>>30445867
Unless you have a knack for being an expert instructor, you do not want an 18x contract. You will fail. I promise. If you're a super high speed, high school jock, get an option 40. Ranger.

Other wise, sign the line. You're an Infantryman,
>>
>>30445920
Being an expert instructor is exactly what I plan to do when I get out. I've been told I'm a great teacher multiple times, often in regards to teaching people how to shoot.
>>
>>30445867
What kind of training are you doing where it takes you until the start of 2017, having trained for three months already, to become ready?

You should be running at least four times a week with a few swims thrown in, and a long hike every weekend if you can get it. It doesn't require more than three or four months to get fit enough, especially if you're starting out reasonably healthy.
>>
>>30445935
Excellent. Good luck to you. :)

(no sarcasm)
>>
>>30445946
I was over 220 pounds, down to about 200 now, recruiter said I need to get to about 180.
He also reccomended being able to do 100 push ups, 100 sit ups, and run 2 miles in 15 minutes. I'm at about 25 push ups, 30 sit ups, and I forgot my last 2 mile time.
I don't have enough time to do that much, because as much as I hate working retail, I have bills to pay.
>>
>>30445935
Remember this; you don't know anything about anything yet. I know you might, you seem like a sensible enough type, (even if I think it's best to make sure you like regular soldiering before trying something very, very demanding) but it's really best to keep your mouth shut.

Right now you want a military career. I'm decades out of date with my own experience of Infantry and parachute training, but the principle remains the same. You want a career. What you might end up doing after is an irrelevance, focus on what's in front of you.

I might have been a bit short with you regarding >>30445946 but I can't stress enough, follow their training recommendations and make sure you can exceed the requirements. You don't need to be Superman.

Not a clue. I was never in the US Army. I had the fortune to work with US SF over the years and I rated them all. Congratulations on the weight loss. Get used to running five, ten miles. Join a running club and if you haven't already, get some proper running shoes fitted.

The best thing to do is speak to someone currently in the position you want to be in. I realise that might be difficult considering the nature of what they do, but they are out there. Ask the person managing your application for an answer and if you can't get one from him, ask for a phone number for someone who can.

I could bore you with tales as to how it was easier in my day (it was), but that's no use for you. Best of luck, and keep the "career" thing in mind at all times. You want it, go get it.

National Guard Combat Engineer or Reservist Seabee?

I essentially want to enlist, come home, start some trade school shit and then start working as an apprentice tradesman of sorts.

I feel if something kicks off I'd consider going Active but for the time being I don't see the point of it.

>>
>>30447119
You aren't ready to enlist in any MOS whatsoever. Thinking that you are going to succeed as an 18X is unrealistic, even with 6 months of training before shipping. Your recruiter is selling you a line if he's telling you otherwise.
>>
>>30447213
I've barely talked to the recruiter, and I told him I want 18X. All he said was the goals I need to get to. I know I'm not ready for it, that's why I'm working on it.
As for being ready for other MOSs, I've heard multiple people say that if you aren't in shape when you get to basic they'll get you in shape, is that not accurate?
>>
>>30447251

BCT is great at taking a lumpy civilian and quickly getting them to the minimum Army standard.

BCT is not so great at cultivating the level of fitness you will need to be successful in Special Forces selection and pipeline training. You need to show up already able to do above the minimum.
>>
>>30447251
The PT in basic is designed to get you to meet the standard. That's fine for most MOS, but it is absolutely not going to cut it if you're planning on 18x or opt 40 or the like.
>>
>>30447347
Did you not pay attention to my original question? I asked, since I know I am not ready for the SF, if it was possible to get in my contract an assurance that if I enlisted today, I'd have a shot at the Q course in a year or something. If not, what would my chances be of getting a shot at the Q course, at some point, if I enlisted without that in my contract?
>>
>>30447347
>>30447361
Not the guy you were talking to but I have a question regarding fitness. I'm 5'5 and weigh 167? I was working out to lose weight (started at 180) and I'm still a bit chubby. Can I just enlist now then? If basic will get me there, should I keep working out?
>>
>>30447445
What MOS are you wanting?
>>
>>30447445
You won't pass weight. They'd have to tape you and see if you pass that way.

Look up Army height and weight standards
>>
>>30447380
>possible to get in my contract an assurance

No.

>what would my chances be of getting a shot

High. Most large posts have SF recruiters, and anyone can apply to go to selection once they make E-3.
>>
>>30447380
No, it's 18x or bust on the contract.

Once you get to your unit be a PT stud and an excellent soldier and you may get a chance to go to Selection. You have to pass Selection before even thinking about the Q course
>>
OP

Do you have anything for someone wanting to GET OUT of the military?
>>
>>30447445
I would think about moving towards enlisting, because you won't know how long it'll take you to actually ship out after you get through the process. Yeah, you're carrying a little extra weight, but you're halfway there already.
>>
>>30447491
Fuck, need to make it down to 185 just to enlist.

Bro thats a lot of options and all are so different. You need to narrow down your options. I never was subs but all ive heard is how tough they are. Theres pretty much no reason to be on one cause they suck ass pretty hard. People on them take pride in how shitty they are but it just isnt worth it. You do get sub pay but imo it aint worth it to be miserable every day. I never served with marines so i have no idea what its like but everyone here says marines is easily the worst branch of the 5 so id avoid it. Yes but if you can meet that routine then clearly youll be fast and have endurance. 100 pushups and 100 situps is a good standard, id say 15 pull ups and 20ish dips. And agin 5 miles in 30 mins. Something like that is gonna make you competitive. You want to be in the top 10% not the bottom 10% right? Yur goal should be to crush it not skert by.
>>30448089
Do you already have a degree?
>What makes a good officer at least as far as you've seen?
HUMILITY!!!
The worst officers are the ones who dont reason there degree means literally nothing in the fleet. You dont know shit and you need to realize that. Keep youre mouth shut and learn as much as you can. When i met an officer and he didnt know something but pretended to i lost all respect for him. Dont be a douche bag im telling you everyone will hate you. Also look out for your enlisted guys. Youre supposed to have their back and interests at heart. Firm but fair is a good policy.
Man you got some decision making to do thats all i can say. If your love one particular aspect go enlisted. As an officer you are a general manager. That means you could get stuck going anywhere doing anything especially as a SWO. You could get stuck doing some bullshit in engineering even if you hate it. You got no choice. Again ill say CTN and HM are both excellent rates but they are so different then throw in FMF or SARC and its even more crazy. You gotta decide what you want to do cause your options are all over the place.

also, the craziest shit i saw someone try to get away with was when i was in basic. there was this thirty five year old private that was always getting special attention from one of the drills, like above and beyond what anyone else ever got, even the fuckups. turns out he was an old kosovo vet, tabbed ranger who'd gotten kicked out for kicking the shit out of an officer. he enlisted under a false name and probably would have gotten away with it, but it turns out that one drill was someone from an old unit of his. the drill was a black guy and apparently he'd been called a nigger and remembered that shit.

one week before basic we were done, ssg. false enlistment was walking around in his fucking tan beret, striped up and everything in full uniform. they sent his ass to the brig.

so yes, it does happen every once in a while, but that's obviously a pretty extraordinary circumstance.

I am very interested in joining Delta Unit. I wont lie, I first heard about them from a vidja, but since then ive done a shit ton of reading about the actual missions and operations of Delta, written by actual former Delta, and I'm really interested in joining. I've already spoken to my recruiter about about Rangers, because I know thats where they select from. Heres my question, what kind of physical requirements do I need to have? I know all about the inherent things (eye vision quality, height, weight, that sort of thing) I mean stuff like how fast I can run, how many push ups/sit ups i can do, that sort of thing. >How many places did you get to see?
Lots, i did 2 deployements in my 4 years. Lived in san diego which was awesome, did a fleet week in San fran, been to hawaii like 4 times same for guam, japan both yoko and sasebo. Was in yoyko for 3 months actually which was probably the best 3 months of my life. Been to singpore twice for a month, honk kong, brunai which was as shitty as it sounds. Phillipines twice in 2 places, Subic bay and manilla which was like the wild wild west. And some others.

you are trying to run before you can even crawl. Start with getting a ranger contract and take it one step at a time.

Worrying about being Delta when you haven't even joined the military is like worrying about being elected President of the United States before you've even run for city council.

It's not even really worth worrying about until you're way down the line. You need to focus on being able to actually get into the military and make it through a SOF pipeline.

Alright, so just shoot for Rangers, and worry about Delta when it gets closer? Thanks milanons
>>
do infantrymen and other combat dudes still paint their helms Vietnam style?
>>
>>30449036
>Rangers, because I know thats where they select from.
They openly recruit from most units not just faggot bat. Also get an 18x contract if you are serious. Do yourself a favor and practice land navigation like your life depends on it.

Unknown distance march at the end of cag selection. Could be 20 miles could be 50. Every selection is a little different and that goes for special forces as well.
>>
>>30449246
you don't worry about delta, delta worries about you.
>>30449247
no. that shit is fucking tacky and you would last all of 15 seconds before a pissed off, self-important NCO was all over your ass, even in country.
>>
>>30449147
Delta recruits you. They typically start off in Special Forces. They take their pick among the best Green Berets.

Yeah, I know that they come looking for you, not the other way around. I'm just looking for things that make me stand out physically.
>>
>>30449184
easier said than done man, thaat training is nuts. But I'd love to go through that SOCM course. I feel as we're back to everyone wanting to go some SOF group. just waiting for the washouts to start popping back up, like that navy depper who washed out of basic
>>
>>30449378
>come looking for you
No they fucking don't. There's a ton of misinformation being regurgitated by people that have never even been to a cag brief. Most of cag is from the regular army. You don't need to be in any SOF to attend selection.

Be an athlete. Be a teacher. Be super smart. Be an expert at something. Be able to preform battlefield surgery and hang a satellite hook-up in the deep jungle.
>>
>>30449378
standing out physically is easy. the army is chock full of PT studs, ranger regiment especially. delta wants you to be an olympic-level athlete AND they wnat you to have presidential-level leadership qualities, PhD level intelligence, and probably most importantly, unerring drive in the face of anything you have or will ever face. you also need to be one of those lucky people who are able to take the worst combat can throw at you and not break down, and that's something you won't know until you've experienced it.

it's hard to speak too superlatively where delta is concerned. they are the honest to god real deal

BTDT 82nd. One out of a hundred, brother.

Well its tough but thats the whole point and benefit. Only dedicated/talented people will make it through so you wont have to deal with shitty people. Plus if Med school is your goal you definitely want to get your foot in the door with a medical rate/MOS id say. But its your call man.

Thanks Anon, I know its really secretive, but I think those are some good things to try for. Thanks anyways.

How is >>30449303 memeing? That's a true statement. There is no set standard distance ruck at the end of either selection.

you guys play WAY too much CSGO/CoD

you act like people didn't want to be these things before video games. young, impressionable men have wanted to do the hardest thing they can set their sights on since time immemorial.
