What weapons do you make with the alien technology?
>>
a gun that shoots $10bills at people leaving the movie theater who just watched it

This it was utter rubbish.
Why not just glass out planet then drill our core? Of course that ball thing existed but if they killed us first they could go find it without opposition

Come on. Have some fun with this.

I love the idea of reverse-engineering a foe's technology.
>>
>>30434340
>>30434351

It is a terrible movie.

That doesn't mean it didn't have a gem of a good idea in it (reverse-engineering alien tech in an attempt to fight the aliens).

The film could have done a lot with that.
>>
>>30434419
20 years later, built two super-lasers.

Aaaaaaalmost Empire-tier.
>>
I'm a huge fucking nerd for the premise. I think I've got over a thousand hours on XCOM EU/EW and XCOM2.

Is this movie really so bad? I kinda want to watch it but I'm afraid it's just going to be disaster porn, which isn't something I've ever been able to muster up a shit to give for.

Meh. I would have gone with gunships. Equipped them with alien shields and mounted alien death rays.

Lot more mobile than stationary artillery.
>>
>>30434481

As the OP, I cannot recommend the film.

But I cannot ignore Dat Reverse-Engineering Alien Tech.
>>
were there no drones in this movie?
You'd think a world military would just shit out a fuckton of drones with alien tech in order to enhance our fighting capability.
>>
>>30434482
That would be pretty spiffy, but both movies pretty much proved the aliens had the air dominance game pretty well down pat.
Maybe something like shielded hover-tanks or mobile artillery/AA. The aliens were decent in air combat, but they weren't exactly the Luftwaffe when it came to air-to-ground stuff.
>>
>>30434544
I thought the same thing, and figured they had something up their sleeve drone-wise, but I guess global peace shifts your priorities.
The aliens had drones, though.
>>
>>30434575

Those sound good.

I'd also design mobile flak batteries (again hovercraft), designed for serious shoot-and-run defense. Imagine the havoc they'd inflict on alien aircraft, darting about like a roach on steroids.

The sky would be so full of green blasts the aliens would be dropping like flies.
>>
Considering they attacked us once with slow moving ships that sat stationary for hours before attacking, and required only one big hit in a weak spot, im gonna go with deathstars.
>>
>>30434482
cut them some slack, they have to figure out a whole new way to wage war with the incredibly advanced tech they now have

I mean, it would be like handing a roamn legion a container full of SAWs and Mk19s and a few brads and hummers with Tows and expecting them to understand the modern doctrine that dictates their use, I mean, sure thru some trial and error they'll figure out how to work the guns and vehicles, but they'll just end up in phalanx formation with SAWs sticking out instead of spears.

tldr

we can use the tech but havent figured out how to use it effeciently
>>
I wouldn't stay on Earth at all.

Super MAC orbital stations, because no amount of shields will protect you from a 3,000 ton tungsten round moving at 4% the speed of light.

>>
Equip infantry with the tech from the bugs in District 9. Reverse engineer the other tech for armored assault and anti-air operations. Crap out drones to spam in clouds so that pne or two could get through and cause some damage.
>>
>>30434740
They'd almost have to, wouldn't they? Even without seeing the second movie, I know it takes place twenty years after the first one. I believe the closest star to earth is forty light years away, so even launching from there they'd need to do at least twice the speed of light to make that timeframe work.
>>
>>30434802
Humanity did have two rings of superlasers surrounding the planet, but all of them were wiped out before they could fire. Moon base is the only one that got a shot off.
>>

>>
Seems to me we would legalize mass-produced humans (i.e humans made by randomly combining genetic parent sources) and then insert said eggs into a legion of cloned surrogate mothers.

It would be the fastest way to increase our population without compromising our genetic variation.

We'd only have 20 years to rebuild our population, and that would call for drastic measures.

This would ensure we'd have a military at all, considering how much of our population was wiped out.
>>
>>30434828
I was under the impression that those were a lot smaller than the ones on the Moon and Area 51.
>>
>>30434823
i was under the impression that the ships were multigenerational.

i read the second id4 book too and i dont remember anything about ftl
>>
>>30434871

Though we'd compliment these forces with non-networked (to prevent the aliens from hacking them) expendable drones.

It's not a good idea to treat the new humans as different than any other.
>>
>>30434828
I'd rather have MAC stations than super lasers, mostly for the big gun factor and they number in the hundreds.
>>
>>30434876

Although it's clear we still have to use our own energy sources to charge the weapons, which explains why the blasts were so ineffective.

We can't compete with the aliens' power sources. They can channel more far energy into their weapon blasts.
>>
Since the first movie showed humans were vastly superior at cybersex than the aliens, why didn't they just hack all the alien motherships and crash them?
>>
>>30434871
major metro areas were wiped out, but the ships were over the first line of cities for a day or so before they fired.

secondary and tetiary cities would have evacuated as soon as they saw the first wave of cities get obliterated.

and one left in the cities wiuld have been basic emergency services and people to frail to move and or to stupid to leave.

ie, sucks we lost some landmarks but the aliens wiped a bunch of dead weight off the public roster

hopefully they took out a lot of urban culture

Our species was deliberately targeted for extermination.

I would start a crash-program to boost humanity's population to any and all means necessary, especially since I wouldn't know when the aliens would be coming back.

It's not a time for half-measures. At the minimum, I would take genetic samples of every surviving human's DNA.

It's basic genetics. The more diversity, the less chance of inbreeding.
>>
>>30435003

Unfortunately the only way to prevent any second-class citizenship would be to hide the existence of the program. The designed humans would need fake histories to prevent them from being discriminated against.
>>

I'm as far as a designer baby as one gets. I'm certainly not in favor of unnecessary genetic engineering for that reason. It's why I said random genetic combinations in the first place.

I wouldn't want "better" humans, just more of them. Superior intellect equals superior ambition, after all.
>>
>>30435091

Look, my point is, if humanity ever was almost exterminated we would inevitably resort to extreme measures to boost our population.

The only question being then was what form those measures took.
>>
>>30434970

Truthfully the aliens would still have the advantage over us. They improved their own fighter.
>>
Certainly not a pigfat low-speed bubble with a twelve-piece canopy and laser guns instead of BVR missiles and guided munitions. Or fuckhuge space Nerfs with no ergonomics or tactical flexibility to speak of.

I was going into this fully expecting a fun popcorn movie. I didn't even expect to go full 'tism. But it managed to make me. The only three things I even liked about it were that it was free, it had an end, and I saw it with friends. And even then, they still enjoyed it. Fucksake.
>>
I'm seeing some people in this thread say that this movie was bad. As a fan of the first one and someone who's interested in seeing this can anyone explain to me why people are saying it's bad?
>>
>>30435716
The story is a copy-paste of the first one, but with a whole helluva lot of disaster porn and extremely questionable decisions/events (read: bad writing) where the humans are concerned, and basically none of the charm of the original. In essence, it traded all of its cheese for hefty amounts of corn.

If you want to watch Independence Day, but with an aged-up cast and more frustrating viewing experience, go see Resurgence. Otherwise, stick to the original.

I think a big mistake we made was trying to fight the aliens on their terms.

In other words, fighting set piece battles of attrition. We're fighting a numerically superior force using inferior tech in a predictable way.

Not a good idea.
>>
Fuck aliens. I just want my phased plasma rifle in 40 watt range

>hey, just what you see pal.
>>
>>30434234
No one here post about this, but electronics being disables is so easy, the best bet is non-electric, fully mechanical/ chemical operated explosives to detonate on the mothership

Its like the tungsten rods from gods, they are simply so simple that you can't hack, emp, or disable them in any way, that is how we would fight aliens

i have heard that a single nuke detonated high over the US would knock out the entire power grid, if so aliens could easily knock out all power on earth in about 2 seconds, so mechanical and chemical operated gadgets would have to suffice
>>
>>30435995
I think that the "Humans as aliens" copy pasta is literally better than the stories of both movies

the ones about how we have adrenaline and aliens dont even comprehend it, and the one about how we fight some aliens with help from another race, and we sacrifice so many people to win and this is revolutionary to aliens

things about the human mind, that seem like faults and weaknesses, but end up being our saving graces, our humanity is what saves us in the end

It seems to me that hiding your planetary defense is a good idea because if the mother ship suspects you have super lasers, they'll just glass your ass from somewhere around the orbit of Mars. Lasers aren't exactly long range weapons.
>>
>>30437484

We could have hidden countless batteries on the moon, concealed in the craters.

Coordinated joint strike. Earth hits the mothership as it tries to land, the moon fires on the mothership's rear.

No escape as the aliens are being hit from both sides.

Railguns, after I've started asteroid mining. Launch a metal slug at them with the kinetic force of a nuclear warhead at extreme ranges.
>>

you can say I have poor taste but I enjoyed it, the story was shit but it was entertaining for me at least.
>>
>>30437575

Would that be enough to penetrate their shields?
>>
>>30438518
I'd say yes, depending on muh plot armor. Current-gen railguns would probably be enough to punch through the shields on their fighter craft.
>>
>>30438518
It would work a hell of a lot better than a laser, that's for sure. For instance, the HELLADS, a laser C-RAM system currently under development has a wattage of ~150MW, or about half the wattage of a 120gr 7.62x39 round impacting steel plate. Kinetic energy is simply better than lasers, assuming you can hit what you're aiming at.
>>
>>30438709
Yes but the point is that the spped of engagement is much higher and so is Accuracy.

It does not take much energy to destroy an incoming explosive based projectile.

Also that part where the president gives the speech, hit me right in the patriotism man.

So yeah, it wasn't the deepest film, but at the end of the day it was a good time.

Call me an /SG/ autist but my favorite part of that movie was the angle of African warlords taking out ayy's for years because one ship didn't go down, and all the xeno skulls used as decoration.

I also really enjoyed the scene where the ayy tech B1's and ayy tech fighters running bomber escorts made a bombing run on the ships. It was like Memphis Belle meets Starship Troopers.

>>
>>30434481
There's no specific thing that's actually bad about it. At the same time the characters are kind of boring and they just keep stretching and faking out the potential victory scenarios for yet another fight. Its flaw is lacking all the heart and energy the first one had.

The ending where they're basically like "we're taking the fight to them" could actually be a much better movie, though.

The theater I saw it in forgot to start the ads/previews, so it just went straight to the movie after we complained about staring at a blank screen, then nobody turned the lights on after it finished.

>>
>>30441957
They did. The new ship was way bigger than the original mothership and built to harvest planetary cores as fuel because why the fuck not? And for whatever reason it's also a stealth ship.

The fighters can gun through ayy lmao fighter shields effortlessly, the big cannons just can't get through the Harvester's shields.
>>
>>30434802

Jesus this reminds me how fucking awful the rail cannons are in Halo.

Recoil is still a thing in space.

I don't actually know how big the ship is, but let's assume it's bug as fuck. Let's assume it's the size of an Iowa. Let's also round the speed of light to 186000 mi/s

If an Iowa battleship with a MAC cannon fired a slug weighing 3000 tons at 4% the speed of light, the recoil would be 496 miles per SECOND.

Imagine accelerating from 0 to 29,760mph instantaneously. In the vacuum of space.

The slug would have the kenetic energy of ~4.31x10^19 N.

That's.. a lot of energy..

Also, the KE might be slightly *lower* than it should, because I'm lazy and assume the tons are metric.
>>
>>30436861

>i have heard that a single nuke detonated high over the US would knock out the entire power grid

I heard Andy Kaufman was still alive in Albuquerque.
>>
>>30440473

In other words, we stopped kissing Stealth's ass after the aliens invaded and went back to Maneuverability to atone.

You can't fight the aliens with "Stealth".
>>
>>30441957

We can't really. We only scratched the surface of their technology. It's clear we still can't compete with the aliens' superior energy sources, which inherently handicaps us.

Compared to the aliens, our energy sources are primitive. We get a lot less bang for our buck.
>>
>>30442219

>>30437538

>>
>>30442131

To put this into perspective, that's about 43,100 petajoules, and one MT of TNT releases roughly 4.2 PJ.

That means the slug impacting something is roughly the same as a 10,262 MT nuke going off.
>>
>>30442518

I'd love to read a story where Earth is "liberated" for its collective sins. When we ask why the aliens have conquered us, they call us out for our various behaviors.

By the aliens' standards, humans are monsters.

But unfortunately for the aliens, they cannot always live up to their own standards. This results in a protracted war, where the aliens are constrained by their tight ROE. It is incredibly frustrating for them, because human behavior makes very little sense to the aliens.

Neither side will back down, because the aliens do have virtually limitless resources right down to their large reproduction rate.

why does everyone always assume that the impact energy of high velocity object and the massive release of heat, pressure, and radiation are going to have the same effect?

just like with bullets, folks, the speeding object has to transfer that energy to its target or it will pass right thru.

stop getting your physics lessons from videogames and scifi books

No, I just like stories where things aren't so clear-cut as "they're bad" and "we're good".

The aliens aren't entirely wrong about us, and we're not wrong to want our planet back.

It's up to the reader to decide who is more moral. The war brings out the best and worst in humanity, and likewise in the aliens. Both sides quickly realize what a mess they've gotten themselves into.

It doesn't help the worst elements of humanity establish themselves as the most frenzied fighters, which in turn strengthens the hand of the most militant aliens.

The conflict plays out as complicated messes do.

As you can guess, it's a pretty bleak story.

In the end, the aliens establish governments on Earth friendly to their polices and interests. It disillusions the aliens, but it does not significantly weaken their military or diminish their overall resolve.

They know they'll never fully escape Earth. It's a problem planet.

They did. Quite a bit, in fact. They even added a new race that has digitized themselves and exist in floating spheres.

Laws of physics say yes.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

The energy released would be the equivalent to a 10000MT nuke. This is fact.

It isn't an explosive, which means that it wouldn't expand radially, the energy would be transferred to a point target and the slug would deform based on what it was hitting, with the possibility of the slug passing directly through the target if it was a ship, but probably not if it was a planet.

To have me do all of this math and somehow find a way to call me retarded and ignorant of physics is a little silly, don't you think?

The fact of the matter is, people want units and examples they can relate to. Not many people can relate to tens of thousands of petajoules, but most people here can somewhat envision the energy of 200 Tsar Bombas.

that was the suggestion. that hyper velocity slugs would make good wespons against starships

an object traveling at such a high velocity would pasd thru just about any ship we could imagine like a dick thru a hymen on prom night.

The MAC's fire a giant Tungsten rod with no explosives, it relies entirely on its kinetic energy to pierce through its target such as Super carriers at such high velocity. If its shields somehow managed to absorb the round, the thermodynamic energy would be enough to vaporize the ship anyways. Try not to take Halo too literally, it's main super weapon is a giant array of ring-worlds that can purge all life in the galaxy.
