I'm thinking about getting an AR and it's down to these 2. They're both at the same price. Which one /k/ and why?
>>
a bump because I'm interested too
>>
Bill Ruger would have been against selling an AR-15 to the public. Buy a Ruger to troll him or buy a S&W to spite him.
>>
Either is fine, although the Ruger FH and front sight look retarded.
>>
If you can get a custom AR you'll get a better rifle for lower cost. I went to the local shop and was sold a 300 blackout with superior components to a Ruger for about the same price. I'd call around locally and see if anyone sells customs. Or you could try making your own. That's my 2 cents as a newbie myself
>>
>>30418211
Personally I'd get the M&P just because the Ruger has proprietary parts and would make it harder to upgrade/swap shit out.
>>
>>30420934
Not op but I'd do this but it'd be a pain to get the lower being under 21
>>
ar556 because muh dust cover and forward assist.

m&p 15 sport ii comes with both now
>>

>If you can get a custom AR you'll get a better rifle for lower cost.
Yeah, no. Not at the M&P price point. Your trigger and barrel (pretty much the only things that really matter to differentiate one AR's performance from another) are going to eat at least half your budget, <$600, from the gate. You'll likely spend half of what's left after that on a decent handguard to free float the barrel. Even with a seasonal sale, you're probably not filling out the rest of the rifle for $150-$250.

tl;dr good frankenrifles start at $800+
>>
I bought an M&P Sport II and my dad bought the AR556 and we both agree that the Smith is generally better
>>
>>30421555
Unless you have reasons, all you did was bump the thread
>>
>>30418211
Get a Colt, faggot
>>
>>30421829
Sorry I was busy, the Smith has a better trigger pull, better fit and finish, the Smith does not have that meme ruger delta ring, and I'm pretty sure the Ruger's gas block isn't an F height gas block since its a milled proprietary part.

The ar556 delta ring is either something you like or hate I hate it because it is prone to breaking.
>>
>>30422093
Would they both not use the standard Colt/armalite style delta rings? This is the first I've heard of this.
>>
>>30422026
As far as I know, my local firearms dealer doesn't sell Colt.

>>30422402
The Smith uses a standard colt/armalite mil spec delta ring, but the Ruger uses a plastic Delta ring that makes taking the handguards off and on a breeze but is prone to breaking if they are overtightened or something. The idea behind it was to make changing handguards a one man tool less process that takes 20 seconds.

Pic is the Ruger delta ring

>>
>>30418211

Ruger is shit has has proprietary parts S&W is a better budget AR
>>
>>30423277
Before I do, can someone who's unbiased list all of the pros and cons for both the ruger and the s&w?
>>
>>30423515
Ruger
Pros: Its a gun
Cons: It's trash
S&W
Pros: It's a gun
Cons: It's trash

Verdict:
ORDER A COLT OR BUILD ONE FROM A LOWER
>>
>>30423515
Hickok45 is pretty unbiased when it come to AR's. He did a multi-part video series on 3 different budget/entry-level AR's, with 2 being the Ruger AR556 and the S&W M&P Sport (gen 1, not gen 2).

>Ruger AR556
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdSz_UQLmlg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSXmf5bNLcc

>Smith & Wesson M&P Sport
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xx-e3ugkgy8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcBkppprV9w

He hasn't reviewed the M&P Sport II yet, but its still pretty new on the market and from what I can tell Smith & Wesson basically just added a forward assist and a dust cover to the original design. So the rifle is essentially the same as before, performance wise.

For my 2 cents, I like the serrated front sight post on the AR556. Might me a meme addition to the rifle, but I like it.
>>
>>30423741
Colts are for people who have vaginas.

There is not one Colt in the history of Colts that are worth a shit. Their 1911s suck. Their revolvers suck. Their rifles suck.

Summertime is here in full swing.
>>
>>30424316
Tell that to every Arab, Jap, Italian, and German who died at the muzzle of one.

6940's are some of the finest AR pattern rifles you can buy.

Sir, I believe it is you who is here on summer break.
Please go back to /pol/
>>
>>30418211
I just traded my ruger match champion for an m&p sport 2, i just put 400 rounds through the rifle today without an issue. It's a decent rifle.
>>
>>30421159
Has anyone actually used their forward assist?
>>
>>30420904
But they are clean and milled, not cast milspec.
>>
>>30423741
IF YOU BUY COLT YOU'RE A DOLT
>>
>>30424772
If your rifle isn't a range queen and you take classes or train in shitty, muddy conditions, you will for sure use it.
I do a FA check every time I insert a new magazine if I'm not in a stressful situation, and so should you.

Ruger has a cold hammer forged 4140 barrel with a 1/8 twist. The S&W has a 1/9 twist 4140 button rifled barrel. The Ruger has a much better barrel.

>implying the government knows how to manage money
>implying the government is even remotely competent when making decisions
>>
>>30424922
Don't give them too much shit. They are definitely not good with money, but they do a very good job at selecting firearms. At least we aren't the Japs who only pick guns designed by generals.
>>
>>30424890
If you have some junk in the gun, the bolt may not go all the way into battery, and without a directly attached bolt handle, a FA is needed to assure it is all the way into battery.
>>
>>30424949
What year did we finally stop using a sidearm that only held seven rounds of .45 ACP?
>>
>>30424991
I'm not a 1911 fanboy by any means, but it is a very battle proven design that served our military very well for a long time. Sure, more rounds is better, but the 1911 is very reliable and if it takes more than 7 rounds of anything larger than .22 LR to take down whatever you're shooting at, you're a shit shot.
>>
>>30421123
Rifle lowers are easy to find
>>
They're both absolutely shit tier, gtfo panic buyer
>>
>>30425127
>you only need 7 rounds to stop more than one attacker and if you can't take down an indefinite number of attackers with 7 rounds your a shit shot
>>
>>30425178
It's called a "sidearm" for a reason. It's used when your primary weapon is either disabled or not suited for the situation.

A 1911 is not, nor should ever be used as, a primary weapon.
That is why the MK 23 was born.
>>
>>30425214
Anon the guy I responded to is claiming if you can't drop a bear with 7 rounds of 25 acp you are a shit shot.
>>
>>30422093
So trigger, fitment and some shit nobody is really going to care about since it would only come up right before replacement. Neat

Still a more valid response than I was expecting
>>
>>30425329
No one mentioned bears. All discussion has been military related. Obviously 25acp can't take down a bear, you fuckwad.
>>
>>30423354
Proprietary parts that don't matter AT ALL. Can you at least take it upon yourself to understand why proprietary WOULD be bad in some contexts before spouting shit.
>>
>>30424316

>Everything I can't afford is shit!

Relax autismo, Colt is teeters on mid-high on the quality chart and high on the pricing chart. They may be overpriced, but they most definitely are not shit.
>>
>>30425214
>says several intelligent things
>That is why the MK 23 was born.

>>
>>30424991
Never. Its just not the standard issue
>>
>>30425407

Christ, son. Go take a fucking a nap or something.
>>
>>30425491
It was semi-related. Anyone who actually used an MK23 probably converted from using 1911's because most SF's preferred (and still sorta do) them for some unknown fucking reason

>probably because "muh 45aarp is better than 9"
>>
>>30425454
Actually, I have secondhand knowledge of a guy accidentally killing a 700lb bear with a .22 short while "tryin' ta scurr it off". .25acp could probably take one down just not if your life depended on it.

Stop talking. There is literally no difference in the quality between the colt and the sport 2 or ruger 5.56. The only difference is price and roll mark. The receivers all come out of the same four foundries across the U.S, and these companies have good enough qc that you don't have to worry about fucked up headspacing or things like overgassing.

The easiest way to spot noguns retards is the people who shill one big name entry level ar15 over another.
>>
>>30425836
I personally built mine from a spikes lower with a falkor barrel, SSA trigger, blah blah blah, but I've served with a colt and it's a fantastic gun. I seriously doubt a ruger or a S&W would hold up to duty use.
>>
>>30425788
Are you fucking kidding, or are you actually that retarded?
>>
>>30425919
The Smith would. Idk about the ruger. Smith is a tough fucking gun.
>>
>>30425919
They're literally the same fucking thing minus the slight variations in furniture.
>>
>>30425945
I'll be taking Yeager's fighting rifle class soon because my wife bought it for me, I'll buy one for shit's and giggles and beat the shit out of it. We will see what happens when the smith is put up to the test.
>>
>>30425791
Hell yeah. I put a MOE+ pistol grip on mine but haven't got around to take a picture. All I'm going to do to it is put the magpul asap qd point and a light on it and call it good for the M&P. I have an aero lower that I'm going to build next and have a good time with.
>>
>>30426000
>different barrel
>different bcg
>different everything but stripped receivers
>furniture means nothing
>>
>>30422680
I have a plastic AR and even it has a metal delta ring. It's also not that hard to take the handguards off with no tools unless you're weak, covered in CPL, or retarded.

Plastic delta ring just seems unnecessary.
>>
>>30426002
That sounds good. The AR556 vs S&W M&P Sport/ Sport II threads are pretty common so I'd be interested to hear your results in a future thread. I'm going to fuck around with my dad more and we'll test the AR556 to my Smith more.
>>
>>30426080
Exactly my point of why I didn't buy the AR556. I'd rather have the mil spec delta ring instead of having another thing that could go wrong.

>>
>>30426627
for a range toy/home defense gun? no

for a military weapon? yes. colt/fn make mil-spec AR15s. mil-spec does not mean it's the best rifle ever it just means it meets military specifications.
