The recent violence at the capital (along with all the recent events) had me worried about the prospect of widespread civil unrest.
What gun would you guys recommend for me as a California resident to acquire to prepare for this event?
I was thinking a surplus rifle like an SKS or a pump action shotgun.
The plan right now for civil unrest is to get me and my family out, maybe even to relatives in Arizona if necessary. Primary mode of transport will be by car.

I don't know the particualr of california's law, but I think the basics of the happening gun always apply.
You want something that you will be able to pull out and magdump without fighting with your own gun.

This has happened on US soil, such as in NOLA after Katrina. Theoretically illegal now per federal law, but in a disaster you should expect the police and local NG to be pissed off and scared and doing whatever the fuck they want. If you try to hide them or say "boating accident" when they come knocking they'll probably ransack your house (or worse).
I would suggest getting the largest capacity handgun you can conceal on your person through private sale from another state. That will be your ultimate backup for a full blown disaster situation where guns are being confiscated.
In general, I would recommend an AR with a removable California compliance feature like a bullet button (although it looks like the ban on those is about to go through), but it seems dumb to buy something registered that's most likely about to become illegal. SKS is probably the best "cheap" option that will be unaffected by the ban. There are some other off brand ones like the Kel Tec SU16CA or the Benelli MR1 that take STANAG magazines and aren't evil assault weapons, but you may want something more established and reliable.
Also, don't rule out a semi-auto shotgun. Capacity and reload time suffers, but there's a reason they're called "riot guns." A lot of them also have the bonus of fudd-friendly design, which will probably remain legal throughout a legislative shitstorm.

The equality thing is just to prevent state endorsed discrimination be it by implicit measures or by exploitative loopholes. It was not meant to make people stop being intolerant assholes, it was meant to absolve the government of any responsibility for the fallout from centuries of discrimination.
