I'm an oldfag (mid 30's) who got into anime as a kid, and I can tell you that the only area where I'm seeing any kind of creativity or experimentation in character design at this time is ecchi and hentai. Regarding the BETA, even in the story they're not treated as the biggest threat since their only advantage is airspace denial via those bullshit laser scrotums, and sheer numbers.
The humans have perfectly good tactics such as dropping chaff all over the place, sending in TSF and helicopter squads to hunt the lasers, before beating the shit out of them with strategic bombers.

Anyway, the bio AA are essentially walking lasers. The small ones have about a 30 some km range and the bigones about a 100 something km range. They may fucking aim bot level tracking to boot. Both flavors are costly for the hive to produce, and will not fire if their is a chance to hit a live friendly. The big ones are fairly resilient, but the small ones are not. So fly low and fast, or put up a hell of a smoke screen.
