Has there ever been a battle in history decided mainly by the fact that one side's soldiers were tougher (had more guts/were thicker skin/etc.) than the soldiers on the other side?

It makes me think about days of yore and the battles our species once had with dinosaurs. We are Badass resilient motherfuckers (except straya)

The Winter War.

Finns back then were a different sort of hard.
>>
>>30411836
Except they still lost, so that doesn't really prove the point you were trying to make.

The Punic Wars are probably one of the better examples.

What are you talking about? The Earth is only 6000 years old. Dinosaurs and man did exist at the same.

Battle of Thermopylae?

I fucking hated that retarded 300 movie tho
>>
>>30412262
They lost, they were decimated in fact, and the Persians were able to defeat Athens.. I don't know how the movie was able to make that look like a victory when it clearly showed them all dead at the end. It was also around 8-10,000 Greeks, not just the Spartan guard (most Spartan citizens were against Athens and for their old ally Persia, which is why the oligarchy wouldn't send their army in the first place) and even with that force they got rolled over completely within 2 days.

It was a romantic defeat though, or perhaps just a romanticised defeat..

Battle of Cannae maybe?
Hannibal did gamble on his weaker troops holding the line against the Roman in the middle so the stronger one could decimate the ennemy flanks.

I think some of the Island hopping battles the Marines did had better kill ratio than Japs. Which is considering Japs were dug in and Marines on offensive.

Still you'll never know how many the Navy killed by shelling the beaches beforehand.

The Russians had more guts to spill and they used that advantage liberally throughout the war.
>>
>>30416063
This. If the Russians had the exact same numbers as the Germans they would have lost.
>>
Israels War of Independence comes to mind.

The Egyptian tanks were within shelling distance of Jerusalem when the tankers got freaked out, and abandoned their tanks.
>>
>>30414522
That was less about guts and more about sheer numbers, Nam was the same, the reclaiming force got BTFO but wom.

also Hitler was retarded and wanted to dick up his army in a billion directions and refused defeat so he could lose the best of his army.

The German Arrogance was more the driving force than the force of nature that is trying to invade russia
>>
Yeah, like massive zerg rushes on an already exhausted army fighting 2 fronts had anything to do with toughness.
The average russian conscript was probably pissing himself as he ran face first into MG-42's. Russians probably had way shittier morale too.

Battle of Yultong Pass

Chinese Army Division decided to stop attacking a surrounded Philippine Army Battalion and instead move past them and force the UN army to retreat. The Philippine force was an island in a sea of Chinese.

But the Wehrmacht was never strong. They relied to heavily on their tactics, while ignoring strategy and logistic. They were just pampered children who steamrolled weak countries into submission. Once they faced a country that fought equally, they began to suffer
>>
>>30412325
That battle has never really been used as an example of winning against the odds though. It's always been more of an example of fighting even when you know you can't win. That's what has captured peoples imaginations over the course of history, the idea of standing, fighting and dying when it's pretty much a guaranteed outcome.
>>
Battle of the Bulge comes to mind.
>>
>>30417486
why are they friendly wtf?
>>
>>30417854
Probably before Barbarossa
>>
>>30417486
This is not a meme.

The Red Army only won the war because American strategic bombers destroyed German industry to the point where they've ran out of bullets and then started to hide the evidence that in reality they've lost not some 20 millions of people but 120 billions of casualties.

Without a doubt the single most savage, bloody battle in history. 50k+ men killed almost to the man from dusk to dawn.

>>
>>30419591
Yes. In the old East/Middle East that sort of thing happened quite a bit.

The kings were considered "holy" and would therefore be protected by the strongest, most-skillful fighters while everyone else served as fodder. Obviously, the skilled men of both sides could cut through the fodder rather easily until you've matched up most skillful vs. most skillful -- and then the real battle of attrition begins.

It's similar to chess -- how many chess games end with just two kings and one or two other pieces? Why? Because you can throw away all other pieces except the king and they're just captured pieces. You can still win. When the KING is divine, that's all that matters, all other men are disposable and can die as long as the king lives, so the meatgrinder would grind until he's dead -- leaving both sides down to just a few.
