Dunno if it was Fallujah but I remember reading a story about a guy in Iraq who got into a hand to hand situation by basically walking in on a guy and for whatever reason his gun malfunction or he didn't have it or something

That's not the important bit, what was is that he gouged the dude's eyes out after wrestling him to the floor and trying to cut him. Think saving private Ryan but going for the eyes instead.

No, the real question is why a bayonet has any use in the world of knifes and sidearms.
I can't see a single situation in modern warfare where have your blade mounted on a gun would be useful, as trench warfare and cavalry are nearly disposed off totally.

What purpose does camo serve in a modern warfare capacity? Everyone has night vision and thermal. Not like some stripes, squares and dots will hide a 200 pound man.

>>30394414
That happened. I also pinned a hadji to a wall with my bayonet there. They jump out from around corners fave to face with you before yelling akbar and shooting their ak over their head. If you have to fend of a charge of fanatical hadji you'd be glad to have a bayonet. Changing mags leaves you vulnerable in close up fights. It also gives you a good reach advantage when put on the defensive.
>>
>>30394495
Are you really that retarded? What would you rather have in a melee combat: a dagger or a spear? Spear. You can stick them from farther away. That's what a bayonet on a rifle does. Plus, you get a club on the other side of the spear so that's nice.

In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front, the narrator stated that they'd take the serrated bayonets from the fresh replacements and give them standard ones, and they didn't take kindly to those that actually tried to use a serrated bayonet. The author seemed to assume the reader knew the reason, and it was never explained to me. Can anyone enlighten me?

Allegedly, it was Allied propaganda that ultimately pressured the Germans into discontinuing sawback bayonets. The bayonets were commonly seen by the Allied soldiers as an evil, bloodthirsty Hun weapon of suffering. Supposedly, any captured Germans carrying sawback bayonets were executed rather than taken prisoner. How true this is, I don't know, but it seemed to be the going idea at the time. There were no issues with sawback bayonets in terms of legality, so it wasn't that.

>>30395808
>a lot more damage
Debatable, but it doesn't really matter. Getting a long-ass bayonet, serrated or not, through the gut would basically mean death in WWI, given the state of medical care at the time. Plus, they were not designed with tissue damage in mind, they were for cutting down brush and small trees.

There were a number of close-quarter actions in Helmand province, Afghanistan during the British deployment there, which IIRC included bayonet actions - pic related

Part physiological, part psychological.

As many anons have already stated, the nature of the engineering bayonet (as they were typically used to saw down saplings and such, to help build fortifications) has the tendency to produce wounds with jagged and torn edges. Hard to fix, high probability of infection -likely long, slow, painful death.

It was the common belief of the other side that if you chose to carry a sawtooth bayonet, you obviously intended to produce massive, painful wounds with a possibility of a slow and painful death. You deliberately wanted to torture their buddies instead of a quick, clean kill. You'd probably already been doing so up until your capture; obviously it would have been close-quarters and you probably bayonets one of those poor souls writhing in the mud. Vengeance. Vengeance for little Tommy, or Bobby, or Freddy. Vengeance, you Hun bastard with your cruel jagged evil sawtooth bayonet. Vengeance.

Fix my fucking bayonet, and hope to hell that I can remember a Kipling quote that would be appropriate for the situation.

If I survive, I'll remember the people I stood with for the rest of my life. Shakespeare summed it up best in the St. Crispin's Day speech from Henry V.

>In the year of our lord 2016, on behalf of HM Government
>Anon's actions under fire demonstrated exceptional courage and gallantry, for in the midst of battle, SPC Anon found himself and his squad under fire from Taliban insurgents. Whilst under fire, LCpl. Anon affixed his bayonet and vaulted across multiple (15) roofs, landing on a Taliban insurgent position of 39 hajjis. Using quick time events, Lt. Gen Anon gallantly stabbed the right 146 cunts in their fucking mouths, right good cunt that Anon. Good on him for being a good fuckin' top ledge he is. Right on ya, you bloody good fucker.

Fix my bayonet

If I knew it meant melee I'd probably have my entrenching tool with the sharpened edges ready as a backup. If I had a pistol that would would be readied as well. Melee with modern weapons are pretty rare. It would mean I'm expecting to run out of ammo and gonna be in it deep.

Fix bayonet then tactically shit pants, knowing that a melee fight to the death is imminent

It could go the way of that British bayonet charge in Fallujah I think

Outnumbered and out of ammo their squad leader called for afix bayonets and charge the enemy, my guess is to sue fighting and not be captured and beheaded

Instead they killed about 30 and had no casualties

Magnificence

Fix bayonets and stab myself at the foot.

amateurs vs trained and experienced troops

Nice!
I really don't intend to die without making them work for it. When you have no mercy for prisoners you get enemies that will fight t the bitter end. Oddly enough a lot of those "fanatic/religious" fighters tend to wuss out. They are the battlefield equivalent of a bully.

Fix bayonets and start shouting blood for the blood god and make the god of death proud until the servants of the false servants of the false corpse-emperor slay me, and lead me to the land of his vision.
