Course it's a useless gesture. But the want to please the socer moms who go and buy overpriced made in China athletics equipment. Meanwhile, they actually have the occasional decent buy on ammo (.22 and some green tip I got for $0.38 a round a few weeks ago) on the other side of the store. And when I check out, at least 2/3 of the other customers have at least a box of ammo in their carts.
There's also a persistent rumor that they'll put your info in a database if you buy 10 or more boxes of "Assault Caliber Ammunition". Unfortunately, the two LGS's actually worth a damn I know of are half an hour drive away.
Actually, AGR Outdoors has a great staff, good prices, and .22 last time I was there. Bought a couple of guns from them and was really happy. And there's a shop called New World Ordnance that's got an interesting business model. You order all guns online and they're shipped to the store where you pick them up later. Guy also does $15 FFL transfers with a discount for LTC. Recommend both stores if you live in Northwest Houston.

I like it, it has an interesting mix of Gulf Coast and turn of the century architecture. Cheap and lots of places to drink, and the sea breeze really takes the edge off the heat. Seafood is great as well.
Just make sure you ask around with locals or someone you know down here, lots of the cool stuff is completely under the radar because it gets packed with Houstonians every summer. Best time to go is fall/winter imo.

I've got a picture that I took nearly 6 months later in nearly the exact same spot, it's quite pretty during summer.
The doomsday flooding hasn't affected my immediate family apart from every single exit from my neighborhood being flooded during the Halloween 2015 flood, grandparents in Austin got flooded during all four of the major recent floods. I haven't been shooting since April; I'm noguns (hopefully will rectify that soon) and the only shooting experience I have is with the rental Cx4 and CZ 75B at Red's Indoor in south Austin. 'Nam-tier weather hasn't been too bad except for the wedding I was working at tonight being rained on, with no significant consequences. I have an extra incentive to buy a gun right now because the owner of the wedding venue I work at has declared open season on our armadillos because he just laid down new sod and doesn't want the fuckers tearing it up.
