Good doesn't begin to describe them. Not are they only beautiful pieces of craftsmanship, made with no expense spared in the days when rulers wanted their service rifle to be a reflection of the prestige and power of the nation's forces, but they were not subjected to the same heavy war service of their contemporaries. That, coupled with meticulous upkeep by Swede armourers and arsenals, mean the majority have survived in accordingly good condition.
The rifles themselves are a good design, the '94 action is not as strong as the later large ring '98 but it's not lacking either. The bolts are large and oldfashioned, the whole rifle is built beefy. The LOP is longer than most service rifles of the time which is good for modern shooters who might be taller and wear thinner clothes.
The 6.5x55 round is sweet shooting, easy to load, well established and has particularly nice external ballistics; it's one of those rounds that you have to really fuck up to make inaccurate. The rifles themselves were made with top quality (for the day) steel and manufacturing tolerances were kept very tight. All this added up to rifles capable of repeatable sub MOA groups.

I collect all sorts of milsurps but French things interest me the most usually. For one, my family is French (well, Norman but whatever) so I have some personal connection to the history, however distant. They're also often overlooked and until a couple years ago were cheap as fuck. Also, they're good reliable firearms, for the most part.

is $300 too much for an all matching 4 serial # Type 99 kokura? It looks to be in pretty good shape, not collector grade but certainly well kept
Pick this up the other week for $135 mainly because I liked the story behind it.
It's a Czech VZ-24JC, originally made for the Southern Chinese government chambered in 8mm Mauser in the 1930's (JC is the letters for the Czech word for Southern China) well the Southern Chinese government defaulted on the contract so CZ had all these rifles with no buyer but there was a rebellion happening in Brazil at the time. So CZ rechambered them in 7mm Mauser and sold them to the Brazilian rebels. Unfortunately for the rebel the shipment was intercepted by the Brazilian government which used them for themselves. The rifle has a PM prefix serial number which means it was used by the police until it was sold at some point and imported to the U.S.

Do you have pics of it? There is nothing rare about a 4 digit serial number. Kokura did 5 series, so there will be 50,000 rifles with a 4 digit serial number or less. The one and two digit ones are fairly rare though. And serial numbers started at zero for every series. At least one zero serial number has been seen before.
