Just an aside, but it was the first 5.56 weapon issued to British forces and we had it before the Americans got hold of it and designated it M16A1. We had them in Borneo, though I didn't give mine a name as that would have been quite odd. They came in giant soft cardboard boxes with orange and red rubber plugs in the end and a manual we had to revise, that folded out like a giant map. We were among the first users. No forward assist, smooth handguard, very light and used in theatre only - they were rotated around the patrol companies and by 1966 they had probably been through three battalion rotations.
Honestly, I don't know why it got a reputation as being inherently unreliable. It was more fragile than the SLR and obviously not as resilient as an AK pattern weapon, but it was finely balanced and well designed. I'm sure you could break it, but I never had any issues.

They got that reputation because of the shitty ammo, aswell as the higher ups saying they didn't need to be cleaned. As long as you take care of them, use proper ammo, then you will have no problems. Just be sure to keep the dust cover closed until "boom boom time".
My ARs and AKs are damn near identical in terms of reliability. Although, I maintain my AR more than my AK. But my AR is my go to. As well as my wife's AR is her go to. I keep the Tokarev AR as my trunk rifle. So you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

The only actual difference between a quality AR and the typical A1 is usually a selector with an additional cut in it and the auto sear, a slightly longer disconnector, and a bit more milling in the FCG pocket. The barrel would have a different twist rate also. Functionally not much different.

Every time I see polished up 'Nam-era AR furniture, it looks way, way too shiny. The bakelite quickly lost its sheen anyways after being issued, so don't worry about it.

You will see furniture that is dull everywhere except for where hands hold it frequently. If you are using an old keyboard, look down at the space bar. See how it is shiny in the middle and dull at the edges? :)

First off, It's not Bakelite
Second, way too shiny means that it was used heavily. Any surplus A1 furniture that saw a Nam boogaloo is usually shiny in several spots, especially grips.

Pistol grips were bakelite and it wasnt until the late 60s or early 70s that colt switched the process up and made their furniture a flat matte finish. Until then it tended to be pretty lustrous. This is why many of the SP1s have really shiny furniture. Go back to start.

To clarify the XM16E1 was shipped out when the furniture process still involved phenolic resin, and they were still starting to gradually introduce glass nylon. These early and transitional runs tended to mottle with use and time. By the time the M16A1 got the type E furniture sets that had completely gotten rid of any phenolic resin, the furniture was matte black like you're thinking.
