So are we going to have to plan a heist of some sorts before these all get melted down?

Checked, also why would they bother destroying them? Aren't Russians smarter knowing the guns have value? Can be sold to neighbor countries or ME nations for importing here and profit. Hoping Century convinces some official to trade stash to Romania then importing that shit here again.

All the Thompsons with charging handles on the sides were blowback operated.

Only the models with the charging handles on the top were Blishlock guns.
The Blish lock didn't really work anyway, and it was just expensive to make.

checked. These weapons will most likely not be destroyed, the most common examples will spend the rest of their days in police armories and the rarer items will likely be shipped out to museums. The public will never be given even one rifle, but it sure beats seeing them chopped up and destroyed. If there's one thing the Russians understand, it's the value of a good gun. Hell, the Moscow Police has made an exhibit out of all the shit they've confiscated over the years, they don't get rid of anything.

I've seen several close-up photos of the objects displayed at this exhibit.
There's some really interesting stuff.
A lot of highly decorated pistols.
A few prototypes and some guns that were made in very limited numbers.

And then there's the homemade guns.
The exhibit features a bunch of homemade guns, a large number of which are quite unusual and interesting.
For example there are some counterfeit "S&W" revolvers (pic related, this one is not on public display. I have more photos if anyone is interested) .
Those were fairly prevalent in Russia in the 90s during the mobster years.

That's all the photos of counterfeit S&W revolvers I've got.

As can be plainly seen the outsides are a lot nicer than the insides. And they're clearly polished up to fetch a larger price. Although the customer would likely not be so happy with his purchase if he knew a thing or two about guns, and had a while to sit down and look at what he bought.
>>
>>30392329
While not optimal, there have been many many firearms assembled using braized components.

Unless that thing is in .357 mag, I doubt a .38" special is going to stress it, assuming it's not made of tinfoil and soda cans.

Whoops! This is a photo of a genuine S&W!

A friend of mine owns a T-34 tank that was modified by the Syrians, then left unattended in the desert for about 30 years before it was sold to a company in the UK that left it in the rain for about 2 years. Now it's in his barn almost completely untouched since then, and it's still in better condition than the tanks in the photo you posted!
>>
>>30392421
Well, not more than a few times. Steels are absurdly forgiving and tend to fail gently.

Usually. Anyhow-

I used to carry an old prewar Colt Dickie loaded with 125 grain .357 JHP's.
(Older Colt .38's had through bored cylinders, so you could chamber .357's, though it was not so great for their longevity)

So...Yeah, that load would have wrecked that piece in short order, but I figured I only needed it to work five times, not five thousand.
>>
>>30392488
That thing about the forgiveness of steel reminds me of when I first started handloading.
I really didn't have a clue what I was doing, yet I thought I was an expert.
I was at that dangerous stage of learning where you think you know everything, but you haven't yet realized how little you really know.

Good thing the rifle I was loading for was a retard-strong FN mauser from the 50s.
Otherwise I would probably be blind and disfigured by now.
Those cases showed soooo many pressure signs, yet at the time I just thought I the brass and primers were sub-par.
>>
>>30392534

Literally, the first "Mauser" action I ever dealt with was a thrashed Spanish small ring.. It more than slightly tainted my view on the Mauser action, though at my peak I owned ~12 variants of K98, before getting sick of the funk surrounding them.

Speaking of handloading.. Best moment was discovering I could scoop load .303" with FFG black, and make really obnoxious loads for my No1 Enfield.

MAUSER ÜBER ALLES!
Sesiously, they're pretty fucking sweet.
There's a good reason why high-end hunting rifles still copy the 98 action.

Still, all actions have their advantages and disadvantages, including the 98 action.

>Best moment was discovering I could scoop load .303" with FFG black, and make really obnoxious loads for my No1 Enfield.

Oh my. That sounds FUN!

When my brother first got into guns he knew very little about them.
He got all the necessary paperwork and then bought a (admittedly very nice) copy of an 1886 winchester .45-70 lever action, just because he liked how it looked and felt.
Soon he realized how stupidly expensive ammo for that rifle is here in Europe since for some reason only premium hunting ammunition is available for that caliber here in Sweden.
As the "handloading expert" of the family I was assigned to load ammo for his rifle.
But since he didn't appreciate all the effort I put into it I decided to fuck with him.
I loaded about 200 rounds for him, pretty basic stuff, just mild 350gr cast lead smokeless loads.
And then I slipped a single black powder load into the bag with the rest of the ammo.

This lead to some hilarity a few weeks later since fortune dictated he fired that particular round at an indoor range with very strict rules, including a complete ban on all black powder loads.

sorry if I ramble or make little sense. I'm quite drunk at the moment since us Swedes are currently celebrating midsummer and I'm about half-way through a bottle of good Russian vodka.

Of all my Kraut stuff, all I have left is a BYF 42 P38.. I had a bunch at one point as some Az channers can likely attest. I know the Lugers got a bit of a workout, and then there is the infamous Mp44.

The "scoop load .303"" is what got me into collecting Commonwealth arms, and then into French. To me they are a lot more interesting than the German arms, both historically and mechanically as well as being a hell of a lot more fun to shoot.

Really. Take a Mk VI Webley to a range, with a batch of BP loaded cartridges.

I'd love to but Sweden is all gay and shit when it comes to handguns.
If it's not a suitable gun for competitive shooting, and you don't get good results while competing with the handgun (actively partaking in competitions is mandatory) the cops will come and take it form you unless you sell it or hand it over for destruction.

Hence there are tons of old service pistols/revolvers and high quality pocket pistols for sale here for like 50USD a pop, but no one can own them legally.

Not at all shocking. The U.S. has treated it's armor heritage like an albatross around it's neck since the end of WW1. When I was a wee maniac, I remember the display at the Patton museum being a rusty field of decaying history. And that was in the early 1970's.

The way the U.S. has handled it's historical armor has been nothing less than criminal.
