Should militia carry swords?

I was talking to a buddy and he started waxing nostalgic about sabers and dragoons and it got me to thinking that a sword, saber, or long knife would serve utility in clearing urban areas and in CQB ambushes. Last night I watched The Patriot and now my boner agrees with my friend, but I'm still on the fence.

Or you could shoot people.

bullets kill faster and easier

Honestly blades still have a bit of relevance in limited circumstances.
However as far as minimally trained militia, you are better off giving them something with reach so they stay a bit out of harms way.

So why not give them spears?
Or better yet why not give them spears that can shoot bullets?

Granted, mind you OP and Comapny's boners have a point, but only when it comes to saber/pistol wielding officers leading a fire team
>>
Wait, are we talking putting ceremonial swords on riflemen?

It sounds cool, but useless, and it's pointless with all the tactical clutter on today's field gear. Feels more like you're asking for some idiot to come up and stab a man with his own hip hanger.
>>
>>30388745
Nah, it's kinda cinema-stupid, thinking you'd get anything done with swords as militia. Hacking anyone apart would be a PR nightmare and squaring off against police is bound to go bad before you even try to mount a charge on a shield wall.

It would be intimidating as fuck though.
>>
A machete should be standard equip.
>>
>>30388745
Nope, go join some gay ass medieval group if you wanna pretend it still matters in any way.

Wasn't there some scottish nobleman who went about Normandy beach with a longbow and claymore?
>>
>>30388745
I'm sorry, does your gun fire 3 rounds per minute? Do you even lack Victorian era technology?
>>
>>30388914
what if he expects to last long enough to run out of bullets, break his weapon upon the foe's doughty head, and gnash his teeth at them with great impudence? Should a man not have a sword in his hand at that moment?
>>
>>30388929
>Should a man not have a sword in his hand at that moment?
A KBar will do fine.
>>
You're fucking dumb. but at least you're dumb in the right direction.

An SBR with a mounted bayonet will be of infinitely more use than a fucking sword.

I say this as a guy who spent his teenage years doing HEMA.

>Wasn't there some scottish nobleman who went about Normandy beach with a longbow and claymore?
Lt. Col. John Malcolm Thorpe Fleming Churchill
http://dailycaller.com/2013/04/03/bedford-three-terrifyingly-badass-wwii-heroes-youve-never-heard-of/

>After seeing decorated action raiding Nazi-held Norway, Churchill took over a Commando unit and joined in the storming of Salerno Bay in Italy wearing silver buttons, carrying bagpipes, and armed with a bow and arrow and a hilted Scottish sword called a claymore. “Churchill,” his 1996 obituary would read, “believed an assault leader should have a reputation which would at once demoralize the enemy and convince his own men that nothing was impossible.” “Any officer who goes into action without his sword,” he reportedly said, “is improperly dressed.”

I'd like to ask this same question but for a different reason. I have a Rem870 converted to a bullpup and can't find a bayonet system that can fit into the frame between the barrel and extended magtube and it doesn't seem advisable to put a knife onto a tacrail based on my limited research. Any suggestions?
>>
Yes and no OP.
Practical uses are slim in modern combat on top on carrying weight. However I do think a knife and/or hatchet can have utility uses if needed.

Post pictures of tube and barrel.

or link to the kit you used.

Fuck me, ya really didn't give much room to work with. Well, get a longer barrel and you can use the systems that screw onto the magazine cap.

If you don't want to do that, you're just going to have to carry a knife/machete/sword on backup (not like you'll ever need too, but still. murrica)

You can make a plug bayonet.
It's old school as fuck but if you want a bayonet, that's your best option with that stock.

Downside being you can't shoot somebody with the bayonet in.

well, i dunno actually. i don't think anyone has done it and recorded the results. I imagine it's theoretically possible. though it might be as dangerous as shoving dirt into your barrel. Shit, do it for science and post results here.

no.

Only the one and he did have a 'mad' in his name, so not a great sign of its usefulness.
>>
>>30388745
The only swords the militia should have are razor sharp zweihanders to behead traitors. Using ammo would be a waste in those situations.
>>
>>30389491
Hah, not out of my Sally, I'll buy another 870 for the sacrificial altar before that.

I mean, if you can remove it by hand, hypothetically the barrel pressure should launch the fucker with a little singe on the backside before it ever has a chance to create rupture forces. Hypothetically, that is.
>>
>>30388745
For city fighting a fire axe will be useful, but not really as a weapon.
It'd be useful as a tool for breaking in doors, making holes in walls, and other things it's already used for by firefighters.

Machete bayonet.
